Tema storico sviluppato dai figuranti del borgo: Araldi pubblici e banditori nel Medioevo astese

Nel Medioevo astigiano, araldi e banditori erano i “messaggeri di parola” della città di Asti. A loro spettava il compito di diffondere notizie ufficiali, proclamare nuove leggi o annunciare condanne pubbliche. Spesso preceduti da musici o accompagnati da militi con le insegne comunali, portavano un bastone simbolico che ne identificava il ruolo. Figure centrali nella vita cittadina, gli araldi rappresentavano la voce della politica e della comunità in un’epoca in cui la scrittura era privilegio di pochi.

Historical theme developed by the village figures: Public heralds and town criers in the Middle Ages in Asti

In medieval Asti, heralds and town criers were the city’s “messengers of words.” They were responsible for spreading official news, proclaiming new laws, and announcing public sentences. Often preceded by musicians or accompanied by guards bearing the city’s insignia, they carried a symbolic staff identifying their role. Central figures in civic life, these heralds embodied the voice of politics and the community in an age when literacy was the privilege of a few.

This was the moment I was eyeballed by the fastest creature on earth.

I went out on my bike towing my camera kit in the hope of Cuckoo on the other side of the Dartmoor. It was a long ride and the weather was cold with rain threatening. I decided to divert to a place I knew these birds had previously nested, and abandon the long ride.

Having found a dip with a view (from a public access area) I was aware of these birds a good distance away. I sat for an hour or so with coffee and crisps waiting in hope of a bird in flight if one took off. Then bingo, one flew across to what I assume was a feeding place and sat surveying the surrounds. Several silent shots later (without the slightest move) a notification ping came through on my phone and it turned its head to eyeball me! Pics in the can it was time to depart. Cuckoo can wait for another day!

Baker has had a good week. He and the toddler have discovered how fun it is to feed and receive treats. He loves the dog days of summer, when he can rotate to being stretched out in full sun, on top of our hot tub or choose the coolness of the grass.
