InFlight Museum serves as a coffee shop, outdoor pavilion, and a public museum displaying marble fragments from Emperor Trajan's reign, circa 112 A.D. The project aims to delve into an ancient level of history, melding the palimpsest of past and present. Traces of the original footprint of Trajan's Library are evident in the perimeter of the lobby space, and furthermore, in the double-row columns that penetrate into the museum. These 'markings' surface themselves within the strata of the present plan, revealing the multi-layered richness of this historic site.
Inflight Museum creates a strong presence along the North and South axis of Imperiali Fiori, establishing a visual and physical link between the Colosseum and Trajan's Column. It is constructed of light-gauge steel truss members, wrapped in a white polyester finish--the colors reflecting the muted palette of its surroundings. Clear glass is sited between each structural fin, allowing natural light to penetrate into the underground portion of the museum, while maintaining a visual transparency on the public realm between City and Trajan's Column.
