Project, implemented by Society for reserach and development (DIR) from Tuzla and IPAK Institute from Velenje was launched to strengthen the role of NGOs in the implementation of EU standards related to medical waste management in Tuzla Canton.
Adequate disposal of medical, hospital and infectious waste is not only a problem in BiH, but around the world. In addition to raising awareness, educating key players and strengthening cooperation between health institutions and civil society organisations, project is encouraging new opportunities to bring about creation of jobs that will primarily lead to improved health of the population.
In 2000, WHO estimated that:
-21 million new cases of hepatitis B viral infection was caused by contaminated syringes (32 % of new infections),
-2 million new cases of hepatitis C infection was caused by contaminated material (40 % of all new infections),
-and at least 260,000 new cases of HIV infection were identified, making it around 5% of all new cases.
