General David E. Baker entered the Air Force and was commissioned in 1969 at Officer Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. While serving in Vietnam as a forward air controller, he was shot down by surface-to-air missiles and was interned until the conclusion of the war in 1973. He was the only Air Force prisoner to be repatriated from Cambodia. He was an initial cadre instructor in the F-15E and served as deputy commander for operations at a composite fighter wing during Operation Desert Storm.

"MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR -- The pilots of the AH-1W Super Cobra that crashed in a remote area of Cleveland National Forest shortly before midnight Tuesday were Capt. Jessica S. Conkling and 1st Lt. Aaron D. Cox, the military announced Thursday.

 

Conkling, 27, a native of Centre, Pa., joined the Marine Corps on Dec. 10, 2004. She was promoted to captain on Jan. 1. Her personal decorations included a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal.

 

Cox, 26, a native of Pulaski, Ark., joined the Marine Corps on May 27, 2005. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant on May 27, 2007. His personal decorations included a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal.

 

Conkling and Cox were originally from Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39, Camp Pendleton, and were assigned to fly with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166 (Reinforced) as they prepared for an upcoming deployment. They were on a night-time training exercise when their aircraft went down."

Josua Harapko and ten others were killed in a Black Hawk helicopter crash March 11, 2003, in a wooded area outside Fort Drum, N.Y. The Army soldiers had completed an assault exercise and were returning to their airfield when the crash occurred.
