Hi,

I don’t know if this is the type of photo you’re requesting to highlight area Earth Day events, but here’s a report (and photo) of the Silver Lake Village Community’s Salo Park Cleanup crew this year. The event took place in St. Anthony Village, Minnesota, a first-tier NE suburb of Minneapolis. Information follows:

The event occurred Saturday morning, April 22, from 9 a.m. to noon, and the activity involved picking up all trash items in a small park that contains two water-filtering ponds. Raking and bagging material was handled mostly by local high-school student volunteers. A pizza celebratory luncheon climaxed the event. It was held at The Legends, a multifamily complex near Salo Park in St. Anthony Village, a combined living-commerical area.

Photo of Participants: There were 12 neighbors from the Silver Lake Village Condo Association (one missing in photo), 2 from the SLV Town Homes Association, and 8 St. Anthony Village High School Key Club students assisting.

Thanks for sponsoring this photo project!

I've learned a lot from the internet on how to create these diorama settings.

For example, I created a cyclorama light to light up the background photo by glueing an LCD strip to a piece of foamcore. If you buy from Amazon, be sure to also buy the little remote control so you can raise or lower the light in relationship to your foreground lighting.

Earlier on a trip to Texas, I took a photo of a cloudy sky as I stood on a wide open space so I could get the clouds as they converge in the distance. I photo enhanced the image, then uploaded it to Walmart. They'll print an 8" x 20" photo, usually same day turnaround.

To get enough depth of field, you really need a camera with manual settings. I usually shoot at f.22 from 8 to 15 seconds.

A lot of you are much more expert at this than I am, so here's a big Thank You for sharing your techniques.

Girl Activist Fellows Ira Kulkarni and Sanjana Thakur are interviewed for DVF’s Instagram at the Reproduce This! Art Gallery Show, hosted by She’s the First, took place at Diane Von Furstenberg in New York City, on October 11, 2023—International Day of the Girl. Reproduce This! is an art gallery experience produced by a team of girls, for girls. These girls are participants in She’s the First’s Girl Activist Fellowship program, through which they’ve spent the last year learning how to imagine, plan, and execute an activism campaign.

Girls aged 13 to 22 from around the world submitted more than 120 artworks on the topic of sexual health and reproductive rights; 19 pieces were selected by a panel of their peers to be included in the gallery shows. Unique to the reproductive rights conversation, this campaign highlights the perspectives and experiences of girls who are hearing about and impacted by this politicized debate.

Window from original St Augustine’s church opened 1869, now in Streaky Bay Museum.

Church foundation stone 15 Mar 1869 by Rev K B Webb, opened 16 May 1869, consecrated Jul 1873, closed when new church built 1912, demolished by 1928.

“Rev. K. B. Webb, Missionary Chaplain to the Bishop of Adelaide, arrived at Streaky Bay by the mail on March 2, and preached. . . March 15, will be a memorable day in the Township of Flinders, as then the foundation-stone of the first building devoted to the worship of God in this scattered district was formally inserted in the walls of the nearly completed edifice. The ceremony of inserting the stone was performed by the Rev. Mr. Webb, . . dedicated to St. Augustine Bishop.” [Register 1 Apr 1869]

“The church is a substantial edifice of stone, with iron roof, in the pointed Gothic style of architecture. It is small and plain, to suit the numbers, requirements, and means of the place, but neat and comfortable.” [Evening Journal 27 May 1869]

“The Bishop of Adelaide, we are informed, returned on July 22 from Streaky Bay, where he consecrated the pretty little Church of St. Augustine.” [Evening Journal 23 Jul 1873]

The popular Muni Heritage Weekend is coming up on Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The traction (and bus) action will again center around San Francisco Railway Museum, across from the Ferry Building on Steuart Street.

You’ll be able to experience transit at its finest from decades past…riding through the streets of San Francisco on vintage streetcars, cable cars, and buses that your parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents rode (if they lived here). Heck, even if they lived in several other places, for that matter.
