We had the call to say 428 original gearbox has been rebuilt and tested. Here it is waiting for pick up, looking splendid. We all hope it runs well and the bus pulls. We didnāt expect the remarkable story which was about to be told to us about the gearbox....

Lancaster City Transport East Lancs bodied Leyland Atlantean AN68 215, WCK 215 Y at Heysham Road depot. This is another Atlantean that passed to Stagecoach Ribble when L.C.T. closed down.
PREPARATION OF CAR FOR COMPETITIVE RUN.
A SERIES OF COMPETITIVE FUEL EFFICIENT DRIVING EVENTS KNOWN AS THE NATIONAL FUEL ECONOMY CHALLENGE WAS LAUNCHED BY DOE IN COOPERATION WITH THE SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA TO FOSTER AND DEMONSTRATE DRIVING HABITS THAT SAVE GAS. DRIVERS COMPETED OVER A FIXED COURSE AT POSTED SPEED LIMITS AND EACH DRIVER'S SUCCESS WAS JUDGED BY COMPARING THE GAS MILEAGE ACHIEVED ON THE COURSE WITH THE OFFICIAL EPA GAS MILEAGE ESTIMATE OF THAT CAR. AS PART OF THE COMPETITION EACH ENTRANT RECEIVED TIPS ON FUEL-SAVING TECHNIQUES.
