Jan and her dog pose for a quick photo opportunity outside of the fittingly renamed Jan's Bar, formally Woody Anne's on Winnebago on the near East side of Madison. The establishment was renamed in her honor by the owners of the dive bar offering a warm welcoming atmosphere and shuffleboard if that should fit your fancy. Although, take note they are cash only so bring enough for your drink and a reasonable tip too!
I asked if she would be willing for me to photographer for my (608)strangers project and she agreed easily (some sort of local legend I take it). The 100 strangers is my go to group for awesome portraits of strangers across the globe so check it out!
Ok were to start!
I must say that summer has got the best of me and i have been working my ass off serving tables!
I am in the midst of creating a knew website ! It is taking forever because i am going through archives of images and scanning alot of film into my computer! It is quite tough to find any time to even take a self Portrait these days! But i will defiantly finish this project no matter what.
this was taken on my mamiya C330.
¿te gusta? a mi siiiiiiiiii !!!
Me gusta mucho !!!
Oii meninas!

I was heading toward the passport renewal office in downtown Toronto when I walked past this man sitting on a low curb in the entrance to the loading dock having a smoke break. I thought he had an interesting look with his bright white hair and I liked the way his shirt matched the wall behind him.
I approached him and explained that I would like to take his photo for a project I’m doing and would that be ok with him. He didn’t understand me and thought I was asking where I could get my photo taken and began directing me down the street. I suppose with the passport office being on the third floor of the building, maybe he’s been asked before where to get photos for the application.
I stopped him and touched him on the shoulder saying “No, actually I want to take YOUR photo for my project.” He was a bit stunned and said “My photo? Why?” I explained the 100 Strangers and I honestly think he was figuring if I’m crazy enough to want to take a stranger’s photo in a loading dock, well, ok. With a somewhat puzzled shrug he said “Ok” and got rid of his cigarette. He seemed ready to go somewhere to do the photo and I explained he looked fine right there, sitting on the curb. I’m sure he went home and told his wife about the nut case who took his photo at work today.
Meet Denny who is 63 and works as a cleaner in the highrise office building. He is originally from Greece. I told him I lived in Greece for a year when I was in my teens. “Really? Where?” I explained I lived in Athens while my father was teaching at the University of Athens. I told him it was many years ago but I saw many of the famous sights. When I asked where in Greece he was from he said “Do you know Olympia?” I said yes, I do know Olympia. “Near there” he said.
There wasn’t much more to the interaction than that. I told him I was most grateful to him for helping me with my project and that it had been a pleasure meeting him. He declined my invitation to send him a photo, saying he didn’t need a photo of himself.
I think the portrait conveys something of the uncertain nature of our encounter. I believe language complicated our interaction a bit, along with a partial hearing disability. Given that Denny seemed somewhat confused by my request, I’m all the more appreciative of his willingness to help me out.
Thank you Denny, for participating in this unusual thing called 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #215 in Round 3 of my project.

So you see. Since Austin left we decided to do some moving around and cleaning up and simplifying ourselves. It was him who said, well when we find a small place in San Francisco we will need to be mindful of what we have. Most likely we will each have one fork, one knife, one spoon, one dish…and so on. The idea of living so simply was very appealing to me as he explained to us what his new life would be like. I have managed to complicate it with so many “things” So I spent my time today tossing out old purses and bags that I had since high school, bags that I noticed had most all been given to me. Only one bag had I actually picked out and it was bought second hand, the other was bought out of necessity recently on the trip back east. So I got rid of about 10 purses. I got rid of clothes with rips held with safety pins, or frayed edges. Things I have had for years. Things that don’t fit anymore. If I ever lose the weight for goodness sake, just buy a new pair of jeans when that happens, don’t keep the hand me downs a friend gave me that I hope to get into one day. It’s feeling better to be lighter of the “stuff” But there are some things I will not let go. Things like the little handmade collage box my friend Heather made for me, the butterfly wings my friend from Indiana mailed me or the charms that hold special meaning in the box with a handwritten thoughtful note from a big hearted girl. These things I will not get rid of. Today’s ordinary.
