From last winter. I made a wide circle to place myself in this little critter's path of travel, and when it came through some tall grasses I was waiting - at an appropriate distance - with my telephoto.
I posted one shot back then, but I think I like this vertical better. Only rarely do they allow a portrait. Now tell me, where do the quills end and the grasses begin...?

Back to the wild. One afternoon, I spotted a Porcupine waddling across the upland prairie. Usually I see them in thickets; this one was in the open - and my dormant brain screamed "Photo op!" I drove past it, got out, and then walked a big circle to get the weak sun behind me. If the Porcupine was aware of me, it seemed to forget after finding some delicious roots to eat, and I slowly worked my way closer so that it was pushing through the grasses toward me. I noticed how much, despite its dark face, it looked like a bunch of grass. Sure enough, it emerged into the open, more or less. I managed four head shots, and about 200 butt shots as it turned around to show me its tail and rump armed with thousands of quills (a Porcupine has about 30,000 quills on its body).
It was a good re-entry after two weeks of suspended animation during the Polar Vortex. I had been sleeping too much, eating too much. During previous winters I didn't let minus 30 weather deter me, but those days may be gone. Strange to get such cold temperatures during a winter with almost no snow: it felt like winter, but didn't look like winter.

A Blue Mountain & Reading Temple, Pennsylvania – Philadelphia excursion has turned at West Falls. and is now accelerating through the curve at Belmont. Reading 4-8-4 2102 looks right at home in the former Reading main line. Although it will not be running on this portion of the Reading main under current NS policies, the big 4-8-4 is being restored to operable condition, and will run on portions of the Reading main west of Reading.

On July 9, 1988, the Blue Mountain and Reading ran an excursion from Reading to Philadelphia on Conrail’s Philadelphia main. Reading T-1 2102 was featured, and Reading Technical & Historical Society’s restored GP30 was added as protection power. Here the train approaches Conshohocken, Pennsylvania on the eastbound journey.

The Story: Amtrak's newest trainset's are in testing, and one is seen here heading to Boston, passing SEPTA's Torresdale Station along the Northeast Corridor. It was operating today as Train 874.
Everybody loves Reading and Northern 2102 but here she is telling us she loves us right back!
The stout 4-8-4 built in the Reading Railroad's own shops in 1945 is charging out of the north (compass west) portal of the 926 ft long Tamaqua Tunnel with a 17 car long fall foliage excursion headed from North Reading to Jim Thorpe.
This particular stretch is of Reading Railroad provenance and dates to 1854 so the famous T-1 is very much on home rails where she once served the RDG on both coal trains and the famed Reading Rambles of the 1960s. Today this line is known as the RBMN's Reading Division mainline at just about MP 100. After emerging from north portal of the tunnel here the will immediately cross the Little Schuylkill River and then do so again just behind me as they work their way up grade thru the colorful valley.

Reading and Northern T-1 2102 was reversing into Jim Thorpe with an excursion from Reading's Outer Station on a cloudy hazy day.
A R&N GP38-2 was pulling the train on the other end as the 2102 consist was turned in preparation for the return to Reading.
