Eastleigh works is now a hive of activity following its resurrection from closure and one of the works pilots is Eastleigh stalwart 07007 seen here in the works yard on the 20th February 2014.

Locomotive History

Fourteen 0-6-0 diesel electric shunting engines (D2985 – D2998) were built in 1962 by Ruston and Hornsby specifically for dock yard shunting at Southampton Docks. 07007 was originally D2991 and it entered traffic in July 1962 allocated to Southampton Docks MPD. It transferred to Eastleigh when Southampton Docks closed. With the drastic reduction in wagon load traffic through Southampton Docks in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s the class started to become surplus and four locomotives 2988/91/92/98 were condemned in May 1973 without receiving there 1973 TOPS numbers. Three of the locomotives condemned in May 1973 were broken up at Eastleigh works (one in 1973 and two in 1976) however 2991 was converted to a mobile generator for use around Eastleigh works and continued in this roll until the mid 1980’s when it fell out of use. It managed to avoid being broken up and was purchased for preservation. It has since been purchased by Knights Rail Services who in 2009 overhauled 2991 , repainted it in rail blue and numbered it 07007, its number allocated under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme but never carried.

It is highly likely that sometime within the next ten months 142086 will be withdrawn from traffic. On the 20th February 2019 it is standing in one of the bay platforms at Darlington about to depart working 2D20, 09:18 Darlington – Saltburn which I will now quickly join.

Unit History

The class 142 (Pacer) was built by British Rail Engineering in Derby between 1985 and 1987. The train body is based on that of the Leyland National bus and many fixtures and fittings of the bus can be found on the trains. The class has a capacity of between 102 and 120 passengers per two-car set. Amazingly, for what was a cheap and nasty stopgap, these units are still going strong over thirty years later and ten years after the bus it is based upon disappeared from regular service.

Loch Meiklie on a cold, misty, winters morning.

Visited the birthday store today! Truth be told, I would’ve completely forgotten about this anniversary were it not for an annual phone calendar alert that I set myself… yes, I’m a dork XD Anyway, the Horn Lake Target is officially 20 years old today – very cool! I was thinking about that earlier, and came to the conclusion that 20 years of continual operation in the same location is a pretty impressive feat for a big box store, so this is definitely a noteworthy accomplishment. (Not to mention that 20 years with minimal changes is even rarer…!)

Today was a brutally cold, windy, cloudy day here in the Mid-South, but the sun came out exactly as I was taking this picture, so I thought that was really nice :) I always love shopping at this store; it’s one of my favorites. I hope Target stays in Horn Lake for a long time. And to that end, hopefully all the growth currently taking place in HL is a good sign: discovered over the past week that the city is getting two brand-new, ground-up restaurants in Bojangles (first modern-day Memphis-area location) and Freddy’s, the latter of which will occupy an outparcel to this very Target store. Exciting times, for sure. And absolutely worth celebrating, I say!

Undergoing an overhaul in the West Shed at Swanwick, Midland Railway Centre is Stanier Black Five 44767 George Stephenson, 20th November 2014.

Locomotive History

The London Midland and Scottish Railway Class 5 4-6-0, almost universally known as the Black Five was introduced by William Stanier in 1934 and eight hundred and forty engines were built between 1934 and 1951. From early 1947, engines were built with a number of modifications and with elements of experimental design in bearings and valve gear; the use of steel rather than copper fireboxes and the fitting of double blastpipes and chimneys. 44767 was built at Crewe works and entered traffic as 4767 on the last day of the London Midland and Scottish Railway, 31st December 1947. It one of the experimental engines and was unique amongst the class in that it featured outside Stephenson link motion valve gear. It was also built with a double chimney, Timken roller bearings throughout and electric lighting. Its double chimney was removed in 1953. It was withdrawn in December 1967 after a working life of twenty years. Following withdrawal 44767 was sold for preservation and was stored at Carnforth until 1974 when it was taken to Thornaby for restoration by North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group. This was completed in time for the 150th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1975 where it was named after the famous railway engineer George Stephenson. The locomotive saw regular use along the mainline, including services in Scotland and was based on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway before being taken out of service at the end of 2002 for a full overhaul. 44767 re-entered traffic in December 2009.

Highland Council have cut all the shrubbery and overgrowth away from the carpark overlooking Urquhart Bay and Castle today, really opening up the view across the water... and opening up more potential compositions, particularly for those not shooting 500mm lenses through the narrow gaps in the branches!

90001 waits the “right away” from Ipswich with 1P31, 11:00 Norwich - London Liverpool Street, 20th August 2015. Whoever in Abellio Greater Anglia thinks this white corporate livery is attractive or promotes the company is sadly mistaken I am afraid, it is awful.

Locomotive History

90001 was built at Crewe works in 1988 for West Coast Main Line duties. In early 2004 National Express East Anglia needed a replacement for the ageing class 86 locomotives on the Norwich-London route. At the same time Virgin Trains was starting to replace its class 90 locomotives on the WCML with class 390 Pendolino’s and progressively 90001-90015 were transferred to Norwich Crown Point depot replacing the class 86s

46233 Duchess of Sutherland being prepared outside its home depot at Swanwick, Midland Railway Centre for a run on the main line in a couple of days time from Derby to Euston and back, 20th November 2014.

Locomotive History

Thirty eight "Princess Coronation" class locomotives were built between 1937 and 1948 at the London Midland and Scottish Railway Crewe Workshops and 46233 and was part of the third batch of the class, entering traffic in July 1938. This batch were un-streamlined locomotives, painted in LMS standard crimson lake livery and had a single chimney and no smoke deflectors and cost an estimated of £13,800 each. Originally numbered 6233 it was initially allocated to Camden MPD. 6233 acquired a double chimney in March 1941 and because of drifting smoke acquired smoke deflectors in September 1945 before being painted in postwar London Midland and Scottish Railway black livery in September 1946. With the creation of British Railways on 1st January 1948 6233 was allocated to Crewe North. Renumbered by British Railways 46233 in October 1948 it was repainted in Brunswick green livery in 1952 or early 1953. In June 1958 46233was allocated to Carlisle Upperby MPD returning to Crewe North in October 1958. In April 1960 it was transferred three times, to Carlisle Upperby before back to Crewe North before heading south to Camden. In October 1960 it transferred for the last time to Edge Hill from where it was eventually withdrawn in February 1964. Unlike the majority of the class that were broken up 46233 was acquired by Butlins Holiday Camps and, after being repainted in London Midland and Scottish Railway livery, was moved to their camp at Heads of Ayr, in Scotland. It remained on static display until 1971 when following a change in Butlins' policy, the several locomotives that they owned and on display at various holiday camps throughout the United Kingdom, were moved to museums. 46233 was moved to the Bressingham Steam Museum where she was used on the one third of a mile line at Bressingham for footplate rides during the next three years, until being taken out of service due to firebox problems. It remained on display at the museum until 1996 when it was acquired by The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust who restored 46233 to full working order between 1998-2001.

In a number of locations London Underground and Network Rail run parallel and one such location is Paddington station. A low Winter shaft of afternoon sunshine illuminates a London Underground Circle Line train to Hammersmith formed of unit 5545 standing alongside a First Great Western Network Turbo DMU 165124 about to depart with 2R43, 16:12 London Paddington – Reading service, 20th February 2013.

Unit Histories

5545 is a C69 stock unit and was built by Metro Cammell, Birmingham for the Hammersmith and City and Circle Lines of London Underground. One hundred and six, two car C69 stock units were built formed of a motor car with driving cab and a trailer car. Trains are formed as six car sets using three C69 stock units coupled together with a driving cab at each end of the six car set. The stock entered service in 1970 and is due to be replaced by new S stock trains in the next few months. Thirty seven 165/1 Network Turbo DMU’s were built at York in 1992 in three car (165101 – 165117) and two car (165118 – 165137) versions. 165124 is a two car unit and is operated by First Great Western on Paddington – Thames Valley suburban duties

I love the coast. It always makes me feel calm. Even when the water is choppy. I wonder if they need a lighthouse keeper?
