Day 203 of Gratitude

William

I remember the day this boy was born like it was a couple months ago (oh...wait, It was a couple months ago!). He has been another special addition to our family. He is absolutely precious. Cutest little fingers, squished nose, blue eyes, chubby legs, and perfect lips. I think I'm going to love this one too. Definitely gonna love this one too. *swoon*

//

Today started out with breakfast + CNN, and a few random men watching tv, listening to Trump ramble on. I wonder what kind of political landscape I'm going to drive through on this trip.

I have a feeling the weekends are going to be filled with lots of long driving days, random stops, gas station coffee, and singalongs, none of which I'm mad about.

I first drove to Fergus Falls, MN to see the world's largest otter statue (Otto), got gas in Rothsay, MN for $19.51 ($2.89 a gallon), and had to turn around on the highway to see the world's largest prairie chicken statue.

These little decisions, the ones that I make when I'm free to choose, and have no impact on anyone else, and are exactly what I want to be doing? They make me feel like myself. And that's a feeling that I've lost sight of - not just in the past week.

As I'm looking back on my notes, today was actually a rather epic day! After the prairie chicken, I drove to Bab's Coffee in Fargo, ND, and had a total "Eat Pray Love" moment where I got whipped cream and syrup in my coffee (spoiler: it was MEH and tasted too milky, lol).

Had to get Starbucks later, and stopped to get some (grosssss) red wine and (hopefully less-gross) whiskey as an engagement/thank you present for Lu and Jarrett.

I stopped to see Sue, the world's largest Holstein Cow, which was surprisingly awesome, and on top of an ominous hill, in the middle of ND.

I stopped for gas a little after 3p, in Bismarck, and paid $17.60 ($2.89 a gallon).

The day ended at 430p MDT, in Medora, ND, which is seemingly a South of the Border of the West. It has strong ties to Teddy Roosevelt, and it's in the middle of nowhere, and amazing.

After a hilarious error, in which I called the wrong hotel (but in FL), spoke to a man with the same name as the right hotel in ND, who had a wife of the same name, I was suddenly without a place to stay for the night. Everything in Medora is owned by the town, so the "nice" hotel was able to find me a room at Elkhorn Quarters, which are converted sheeps wagons at the edge of town. It was cheap, and exactly what I needed, even if you could see the ground down the shower drain when the lights were off.

I brushed my teeth and put some wine in my Starbucks cup from earlier, and promptly started exploring town. There were little things along the way that I found incredibly comforting along the way - signs about Milwaukee, a dog named Xena, etc.. It's funny how far these things go when you have nothing to hold on to, and regardless of their significance, they were appreciated.

I found a small bar and had a glass of wine at the bar while I waited for a table outside, and my salad was actually, not that bad. I regretted not getting a side of french fries, but reminded myself I'm going to be sitting a lot this trip, and I probably shouldn't be eating french fries at every meal.

When I said that (dinner) came fast, the waiter immediately retorted that, "That's not the first time a lady has said that to me," and at first I laughed, but then I felt instantly gross, thinking of how many other ladies he's said that to, so dismissed it and finished my salad and decided ice cream was called for.

Medora was kind of amazing - very Dirty Dancing-esque - and the whole town shuts down for the Medora Musical every night (except for ice cream!). I'm sure I could have befriended some people and seen what that was all about, but that's not the point of the trip.

The point of today was to see the Badlands in North Dakota, marvel at them, and walk around with wine in a Starbucks cup. Mission accomplished.

Oh! I also saw someone actually get pulled over today (like, saw the whole thing, which I feel like you never really see?), and passed an Apple Maps truck first thing in the morning, which was pretty cool.
