Brewster County is the largest county in Texas at 6169 sq. miles, in terms of land area. It was created in 1887 by the legislature from Presidio County. The current courthouse constructed in 1887 is the only courthouse to serve the county. It is an American Second Empire Style building. The county seat is Alpine, originally named Murphyville. The Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway (a Southern Pacific subsidiary) reached Alpine in 1882. The 255th and 256th Texas counties, Buchel and Foley Counties that no longer exist. The Texas legislature passed an act making Buchel, Foley, and Jeff Davis counties out of Presidio County on March 15, 1887, shortly after passing a similar act making Brewster County out of part of Presidio County. The original Brewster County occupied the northwestern portion of what is now Brewster County, and Buchel County occupied the northeastern part, including the town of Marathon, which was selected as the county seat. Buchel and Foley counties were not organized, however, and on March 22, 1889, the legislature passed an act attaching them to Brewster County for surveying purposes. By 1897 Buchel and Foley counties had still not been organized, and in that year their territory was officially added to that of Brewster County, making the latter the largest county in Texas. After a daring diamond robbery, the thief, while attempting to double-cross his partners, is mortally wounded, and hides the diamonds in a lamp of a horse-carriage(Victoria) No.203. The owner of this Victoria is blamed for wounding the thief and is arrested. The wounded thief gives a key, a piece of paper, and verbal instructions to a hospital ward boy, and dies. The wardboy follows the instructions, goes to Bori Bunder Railway Station, opens the locker with the key, deposits the paper in the locker, and goes on his way. Then Raja and Rana are released from prison, and come across the key and hilariously set about trying to find the lock to this key, not knowing that they are putting their very lives, as well as the lives of the owner of the Victoria, her boyfriend, and a child, in jeopardy.
