The Sheepfold of the Goois Natuurreservaat - Nature Reserve in Blaricum is a permanent place for the heath sheep. The small Drenthe heath sheep belongs to the primeval races of Europe and is the oldest breed of sheep from the mainland of Western Europe. Way back from about 4000 BC lived in Drenthe in the north-east of the Netherlands. It is a rustic breed, slender, the horns, the shaggy coat and the fact that they thrive on poor soil. Meanwhile a second flock of sheep led by the shepherd Johan Griffioen. Such a special job since there are only thirty shepherds in the Netherlands. Johan gained national fame by walking hundreds of kilometers a protest trip with his flock of sheep and dog Flo. In August 2007 this would bring the fragmentation of Nature reserve to its attention. Johan the shepherd and his two border collies have full attention to the sheep. It's nice to see. These typical breed shepherd dogs and shephard at work. The Border Collie comes from the area called Border between England and Scotland, as they were used for driving and herding sheep. The shepherds and their flocks can be found here on the Bussummerheide, or on the Westerheide , the Zuiderweide, French Kampsheide and around the Laarder Wasmeer. The herd of Drenthe Heath sheep passed the Nature Bridge Zanderij Crailoo. This 800 meter long bridge connects the nature of the Vecht and the Spanderswoud. Each year, hundreds of lambs born in the flock. Meanwhile, this group consists of 268 sheep.

The Drenthe Heath Sheep is the oldest sheep breed of the Western Europe continent. Approximately 4000 BC the first Drenthe Heath sheep came to Drenthe - a province in the northeast Netherlands. They probably came with emigrants from France. Photo of the flocks on the Bussummerheide - Noord Holland.

Wadi Rum (Arabic: وادي رم‎) also known as The Valley of the Moon (Arabic: وادي القمر‎) is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in south Jordan at 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba. It is the largest wadi in Jordan. The name Rum most likely comes from an Aramaic root meaning 'high' or 'elevated'. To reflect its proper Arabic pronunciation, archaeologists transcribe it as Wadi Ramm. The highest elevation in Wadi Rum is Mount Um Dami at more than 1,800 m (5,900 ft) above sea level.

Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures–including the Nabateans–leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples. As of 2007, several Bedouin tribes inhabit Rum and the surrounding area.

In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. In the 1980s one of the rock formations in Wadi Rum was named "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" in memory of Lawrence's book penned in the aftermath of the war, though the 'Seven Pillars' referred to in the book actually have no connection with Rum.

The area centred on Wadi Rum (the main valley) is home to the Zalabia Bedouin who, working with climbers and trekkers, have made a success of developing eco-adventure tourism, now their main source of income. The area around Disi to the NE, home to the Zuweida Bedouin and erroneously also thought to be part of Wadi Rum by visitors, caters more for Jordanian visitors from Amman, with campsites regularly used by party-goers.

Petroglyphs

Khaz'ali Canyon in Wadi Rum is the site of petroglyphs etched into the cave walls depicting humans and antelopes dating back to the Thamudic times.

Tourism

The area is now also one of Jordan's important tourist destinations, and attracts an increasing number of foreign tourists, particularly trekkers and climbers, but also for camel and horse safari or simply day-trippers from Aqaba or Petra. In contrast, there are almost no local or Arab tourists though nearby Disi (not actually part of Rum) attracts young people from Amman at weekends. Popular activities in the desert environment include camping under the stars, riding Arab horses, hiking and rock-climbing amongst the massive rock formations.

Jabal Rum (1,734 metres (5,689 ft) above sea level) is the second highest peak in Jordan and the highest peak in the central Rum, covered with snow and rising directly above Rum valley opposite Jebel um Ishrin, which is possibly one metre lower. The highest peak in Jordan is south of Rum close to the Saudi border. Named Jebel um Adaami it is 1,840 m (6,040 ft) high and was first located by Difallah Ateeg, a Zalabia Bedouin from Rum. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Red Sea and the Saudi border from the top. It is now a very popular trek from Rum village.

The influx of tourists to this once isolated area has substantially increased the financial fortunes of the Bedouin people, and it is not uncommon to see locals using mobile phones and driving expensive four-wheel drive vehicles; many also have wi-fi and computers to run their adventure tourism businesses.

The village of Wadi Rum consists of several hundred Bedouin inhabitants with their goat-hair tents and concrete houses and also their four wheel vehicles, one school for boys and one for girls, a few shops, and the headquarters of the Desert Patrol.

Filming location

The area has been used as a background setting in a number of films:

•Lawrence of Arabia - David Lean filmed much of this 1962 film on location in Wadi Rum.[1]

•Red Planet - Wadi Rum was used as the surface of Mars in this 2000 film.

•Passion in the Desert - The area was also used for scenes in this 1998 film.

•The Face - BBC Film, Rock climbing in Rum

•Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Represented as being in Egypt

•The Frankincense Trail - scenes from train, and aerial filming too

Location: My farm in the Little Karoo

Description: When you're staying in a mountain cottage without electricity, there is a tendency to go to bed early... though this usually means that I also wake up early! I lie in bed until I can hear the birds start singing, and then I grab my camera and go for a walk. This was the scene that awaited me early on Sunday morning…

Technique: This definitely needed two photographs to capture! A correct exposure for the sky rendered the foreground pitch black, and an exposure for the foreground completely washed out the streaky effect. After stitching the two images, I messed around with the levels to brighten the shaded foreground and to emphasize the streaks in the sky, and then I used some plug-in filters to add a little bit of colour and warmth.

here: View On Black

Every year, a tradition now, on the day of our return from the Continent, friends give me a huge bouquet of lilies, this year no different... except, there was an extra surprise, this very exotic lily, picked from their greenhouse, delicately and carefully wrapped for the long journey...

Gloriosa is a genus of five or six species in the plant family Colchicaceae, from tropical Africa and Asia. The most common English names are flame lily, fire lily, gloriosa lily, glory lily, superb lily, climbing lily, and creeping lily. www.flickr.com/photos/9550033@N04/4908096614/

The approximate 195 tons trailing load of six Mark I vehicles plus the 109 tons of the locomotive is obviously on this occasion to much for the 1470 bhp available to 31421 to get it up the Lickey bank as it has picked up the two class 37 bankers to give it a shove up the hill. The class 31, 2x class 37 combination is seen here as they start to accelerate away from the standing start as they approach Bromsgrove station and the start of the bank, 14th April 1979.

Locomotive History

31421 was originally D5558 and was built in 1959. The class were built with even less powerful Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engines but the engines were not successful and in 1964 a programme of works commenced to re-engine the fleet with the more powerful 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine. Under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme D5558 became 31140. During the 1970’s a number of class 31’s were fitted with electric train heating equipment for both secondary passenger duties and empty coaching stock duties between carriage depots and stations. 31140 was fitted with electric train heating and dual braking equipment during a classified repair at Doncaster works in the autumn of 1974. It was released into traffic in November 1974, renumbered 31421 and allocated to Cricklewood for empty coaching stock duties between Cricklewood and St Pancras. Despite being somewhat underpowered it would give thirty eight years service and would remain in traffic until withdrawn in March 1997. Following withdrawal it was stored in Crewe South Yard for a number of years until moved to Carnforth in January 2003. This was followed in September 2003 with a move to the Midland Railway Centre at Swanwick. However preservation passed it by and in April 2007 it was transported by road to EMR Kingsbury and broken up in August 2007.

The iconic Sam the Record Man sign on Yonge Street is set to light up once again.

The sign was removed from its original location outside Sam’s flagship store at 347 Yonge St. after the store shuttered its doors for good in 2007. Ryerson University, which owns large swaths of land in the area, took ownership of the sign with the promise of restoring it and reinstalling it near its original location.

Workers have been installing it atop the Toronto Public Health building at 277 Victoria St. and the university has announced that it will be switched on at roughly 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8. The lights will remain on throughout the holiday season before going dark again on Jan. 3.

"Ryerson University is pleased that the iconic signs are nearing completion and that they will be lit for the next few weeks while the final work is underway," said Ryerson director of communications Michael Forbes in a statement. "We are looking forward to the lighting ceremony with the Sniderman family and the Mayor early in the new year."

A public lighting ceremony to mark the official permanent lighting of the historic sign is expected to take place the week of Jan. 8.

● The Château des ducs de Bretagne (English: Castle of the Dukes of Brittany) is a large castle located in the city of Nantes in the Loire-Atlantique département of France; it served as the centre of the historical province of Brittany until its separation in 1941. It is located on the right bank of the Loire, which formerly fed its ditches. It was the residence of the Dukes of Brittany between the 13th and 16th centuries, subsequently becoming the Breton residence of the French Monarchy.

● The castle has been listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1862. Today the castle houses the Nantes History Museum.

● Starting in the 1990s, the town of Nantes undertook a massive programme of restoration and repairs to return the site to its former glory as an emblem of the history of Nantes and Brittany. Following 15 years of works and three years of closure to the public, it was reopened on 9 February 2007 and is now a popular tourist attraction.

● The restored edifice now includes the new Nantes History Museum, installed in 32 of the castle rooms. The museum presents more than 850 objects of collection with the aid of multimedia devices. The castle and the museum try to offer a modern vision of the heritage by presenting the past, the present and the future of the city. Night-time illuminations at the castle further reinforce the revival of the site.

● The 500-metre round walk on the fortified ramparts provides views not just of the castle buildings and courtyards but also of the town.

This is at the Le Musée des Pionniers Museum.

This lighthouse was built in 1912 on the Grand-Digue wharf and had a mast 8 to 9 meters (28 to 30ft) high on the top from which a kerosene lantern was hoisted up each night and lowered each morning by ropes and pulleys.

In 1950, the lighthouse was modernized and the energy was provided by battery.

After the fisherman had to move to another deeper wharf, the wharf became unsafe. The lighthouse was moved then used to shelter nets and fishing gear for almost 40 years.

In 2006, the lighthouse became a heritage object; it was renovated and placed on a new wharf to exhibit fishing materials and tell its story. In 2006 it was donated to the Le Musée des Pionniers Museum and placed on display in 2007. It is the only remains example of this style of light.

The White Stripes, American rock duo from Detroit, known for combining punk, folk, country, and Mississippi Delta blues. Original band members were guitarist-vocalist Jack White (original name John Anthony Gillis; b. July 9, 1975, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.) and drummer Meg White (original name Megan Martha White; b. December 10, 1974, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan).

In 2001 the White Stripes released their breakthrough album, White Blood Cells. Michel Gondry’s eye-catching video for the single “Fell in Love with a Girl” received regular airplay on MTV, and the group became media darlings. The duo followed with Elephant (2003), a percussion-driven collection of songs that featured Meg’s debut as a vocalist. Elephant earned a Grammy Award for best alternative music album, and it sold over a million copies on the strength of singles such as “Seven Nation Army” and “The Hardest Button to Button.” Jack appeared in the film Cold Mountain (2003), and he contributed five songs to its Grammy-nominated soundtrack. He also produced country legend Loretta Lynn’s Van Lear Rose (2004), a collection of honky-tonk anthems that earned a pair of Grammy awards and introduced Lynn to a new generation of fans. The White Stripes earned another Grammy for their album Get Behind Me Satan (2005), and the song “Icky Thump,” from their album of the same name (2007), became the band’s first Top 40 hit on the Billboard singles chart. In addition, Icky Thump was the White Stripes’ third recording to earn the Grammy for best alternative music album, and the title song was also awarded a Grammy.

The White Stripes went on hiatus in 2007 after Meg was afflicted with performance-related anxiety. They returned to the stage for a single performance in February 2009 for the final episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Continuing to expand his body of work, Jack experimented with straightforward power pop as a member of the Raconteurs. The quartet produced a pair of well-received albums (2006 and 2008) and quickly became a fixture on the summer concert circuit. Meg married guitarist Jackson Smith (son of rock legend Patti Smith) in May 2009, and Jack undertook yet another side project. Enlisting members of the Kills and Queens of the Stone Age, Jack formed the Dead Weather, a bluesy psychedelic rock combo whose debut album, Horehound, was released in July 2009.

Thunder Creek Trail Trip

Thunder Creek Trip 2007

Some more of my first art smoke. This is smoke from an incense stick. I shot it with a background of black velvet and inverted the image in Photoshop to make it white. Then messed with hue/saturation and contrast to get the smoke to become pink.

Put the thorn in my side, the coins on my eyes

I'm not awake, I'm leaving Eden

And all her frozen charms lie cold in my arms

Panic went away and left me reeling

It's warm outside but the weather fails to hide

the stinging loss inside

For in the back of my mind I always thought I'd find my way to paradise

On I'd walk to paradise ...

But grace and lies locked the door from the other side

And now there's not much else there

Grace and lies

In all how long can you hide, how long?

The cost of innocence is the loss of innocence

Some may pass away, but some die screaming

When it came to my time, oh it took me by surprise

Was it my mistake, or am I born for giving in?

Palácio da Pena, or "Castelo da Pena" as it is more commonly known, is the most complete and notable example of Portuguese architecture in the Romantic period. It stands on one of the rocky peaks of the Serra de Sintra, and blends in a surprisingly fortunate manner with its natural background of greenery and crags, testifying to the aesthetic potentialities of the project.

The Palace dates back to 1839, when the King Consort Dom Fernando II of Saxe Coburg-Gotha (1816-1885) bought the ruins of the Hieronymite Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Pena and started to adapt it for use as a residence, according to his Romantic taste.

As his director of the works, Baron von Eschwege put into effect the King's revivalist ideas and round the restored ruins of the monastery raised a majestic pastiche inspired by the palaces and castles of Bavaria. Fanciful to an extreme, the architectural fabric of Pena finds much of its inspiration in the Moorish, Gothic and Manueline motifs of Portuguese art, as well as in the Wagnerian spirit of the Schinkel Castles of Central Europe. It is to be noted that of the former 16th Century monastery there were preserved the Manueline cloister and the chapel, the latter with a celebrated Renaissance reredos by the sculptor Nicolau Chanterene.

47027 was built at Crewe as D1599, it went new to Landore 29/05/1964, it was later renumbered as 47558 (31/12/1980). The loco was withdrawn 01/03/2002 and cut at EMR Metals (Kingsbury) 01/05/2007

The second shot for my icon-less friend minggie: "i now fully expect a smiling/frowning bird picture from you".

Most bird's beaks are already frown shaped and they cannot do much about this. So that's actually a (mostly) unaltered image of the bird. The blue jay yesterday had it's beak liquified quite a lot to make him smile, maybe that tickled him?

There's actually a real smiling bird out there as documented by the National Geographic. But I didn't have the time or resolve to travel to Columbia for minggie's assignment.

This image was also taken at the Elizabeth Morton Wildlife Refuge on the south-fork of Long Island. The bird was hopping along on the walkway while I was on my (cold) belly to get the lowest possible angle.

L44 (No.1) had the honour of working the last steam-hauled LT passenger train in 1961, and survived in use until 1965; it is now preserved at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre.

L44 was saved from being broken up for scrap by the endeavours of a 19 years old London Transport Mechanical Engineering Apprentice (Jim Stringer),[citation needed] who started the Met Tank Appeal Fund in 1962. The objective was originally to save the only remaining 0-6-2T 'F' Class locomotive numbered L52 in the London Transport fleet. LT offered this locomotive to him for £500. The Met Tank Appeal Fund raised just over £1,000, but when Jim went to hand over the cheque he was advised that an inspection had revealed a cracked mainframe, and the locomotive could no longer be 'steamed' and was therefore no longer suitable for preservation. However he was offered L44 in its place for the sum of £450. Jim was helped by committee members of the London Railway Preservation Society, and a locomotive fitter named Gerald Fitzgerald. The LRPS had storage for the Locomotive at Bishops Stortford, and also at Luton where it was subsequently moved to, but the Quainton Railway Society offered a secure and permanent base for it at their newly established museum in Buckinghamshire, and L44 (now correctly referred to as Met Loco No. 1) moved there in the mid-1960s. No. 1 was maintained in main-line condition and made occasional forays onto its old home lines during the "Steam on the Met" events which took place between 1989 and 2000. It received a full overhaul in 2001.

In 2007 No. 1 made its first visit away from Buckinghamshire Railway Centre since the 2001 Heavy Overhaul, arriving at the Bluebell Railway on 24 July in order to take part in the "Bluebell 125" celebrations. While there it was paired with four original Metropolitan Railway carriages which have been restored by the Bluebell. During August 2008 it visited Barrow Hill and in October 2008 Llangollen, to participate in their heritage events.
