The BMW New Six CS (internal name BMW E9) was a two-door coupé built for BMW by Karmann from 1968 to 1975. It was developed from the New Class-based BMW 2000CS coupé, which was enlarged to hold the BMW M30 straight-6 engine used in the E3 sedan.
The E9 platform, especially the 3.0CSL homologation special, was very successful in racing, especially in European Touring Car Championship and the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. This helped to establish BMW's status as a sporty driver's car.

Der BMW E9 ist die Coupé-Variante der Baureihe E3. Die Fahrzeuge wurden zwischen Dezember 1968 und Dezember 1975 im Lohnauftrag von BMW bei Karmann in Rheine gebaut. Insgesamt entstanden 30.546 Exemplare. Das Angebot umfasste ausschließlich Sechszylindermotoren mit einem Hubraum zwischen 2,5 und 3,2 Litern, die Motorleistung reicht von 150 bis 206 PS.
Der E9 ersetzte das ab 1965 gebaute Coupé 2000 C/2000 CS der „Neuen Klasse“. Nachfolger des E9 wurde 1976 die 6er Baureihe (E24).

"The BMW New Class (German: Neue Klasse) was a line of sedans and coupes produced by German automaker BMW between 1962 and 1977.
These models ensured BMW's solvency after the company's financial crisis of the 1950s and established the identity of BMW automobiles as sports sedans.
The first New Class vehicle was the 1500, a 4-door compact executive car with the new M10 (at the time called M115) OHC 4-cylinder engine.
In 1965, the 2000C and 2000CS luxury coupés were added to the range.
Replacement of the New Class models began with the larger 2000C and 2000CS coupés, which were replaced by the 6-cylinder E9 2800CS in 1969.
In 1972, the 4-door sedans were replaced by the larger E12 5 Series.
The New Class coupes introduced the Hofmeister kink, which has been used on most BMW cars since. Another legacy of the New Class is the iconic 02 Series, which are a shortened version of the New Class sedans."

In 1969, BMW introduced the 2000tii ('touring international, injected'), BMW's first fuel-injected model, featuring Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. The 2000tii produced 97 kW (130 hp) at 5,800 rpm and 178 N·m (131 lb·ft) at 4,500 rpm.

A plucky little West German motor that kept the divided nation mobile throughout the late 60's and early 70's, the BMW 2002, also known as the New Class, became a staple of the company's family market, and design cues from this would be later adopted into follow cars that would help this little-known German builder take over the entire automotive world!
The first of the New Class BMW's began production in 1962 with the 1500, the company's first family sedan since the 340 of 1953. The car was equipped with a new BMW M10 OHC Straight-4, at an initial 1.5L and producing 90hp. The 1500, and all subsequent New Class cars, had unitary construction, fully independent suspension with MacPherson struts in front and semi-trailing arms at the rear, front disc brakes, and a front-mounted engine.
Initially a series of four-door sedans, the New Class line was broadened to include the 2000C and 2000CS two-door coupés at the high end in 1965 and the 1600-2 two-door economy sedan at the low end in 1966. The 1600-2, later renamed the 1602, was itself expanded into the 02 Series 1600 and 2002. Using the engine and suspension of the original four-door design in a smaller and lighter two-door unit body, the 02 series, especially the 2002, caught auto enthusiasts' attention and established BMW as an international brand. The 2002 however would go on to later fame as the first European production car to be fitted with a turbocharger, this version, the 2002 Turbo, being launched in 1973 and being propelled by 170hp of the finest German engineering.
Replacement of the New Class line of cars began with the larger 2000C and 2000CS coupés, which were replaced by the six-cylinder BMW E9 starting with the 2800CS in 1969. The New Class four-door sedans were replaced by the larger BMW 5 Series in 1972. The 02 Series was replaced by the BMW 3 Series in 1975, except for the economy 1502 model which continued until 1977.
