Sharpless 198 (Simeis 5) is an emission nebula located approximately 7,500 light-years away in Cassiopeia. This nebula is often overlooked or imaged along with the more popular Soul Nebula (IC 1848).
Ha – 24x1800s – 720 minutes – binned 1x1
RGB – 8x300s – 40 minutes each – binned 2x2
840 minutes total exposure – 14 hours
Imaged over nine nights in 2016 and 2017 at Dark Sky New Mexico at Rancho Hidalgo (Animas, New Mexico) with a SBIG STF-8300M on an Astro-Tech AT12RCT at f/8 2432mm.
After last year's mothballing of the Central of Georgia nonsense; it's still nice to shoot a 198 at Clanton Street again. Even with an extremely ratty UP GE leading in less than perfect weather. Regular thru trains between Birmingham and Columbus have been back for about 6 months now; but whether that is 2 or 4 a day seems to change every week.
