The price of progress. Old magazines and journals destined for recycling. Students rarely read archived copies and we often have access to electronic copies. So why keep them for the sake of keeping them? Space for more PCs and coffee shops (okay the last bit's a bit cynical - but have you been to a Uni or Museum recently?)

BECAUSE THE CONCENTRATED SUNLIGHT RAISES THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SOLAR CELLS, A FLUID MUST BE USED TO COOL THE CELLS TO KEEP THEM OPERATING EFFICIENTLY. HEAT FROM THE FLUID WILL BE RELEASED IN A HEAT EXCHANGER AND USED TO ASSIST IN HEATING THE CLASSROOMS. TO COMPLEMENT THE PV SYSTEM, THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF THE BUILDINGS WILL EMPLOY SUCH ENERGY CONSERVING MEASURES AS SOUTH-FACING ORIENTATION,NATURAL VENTILATION, SHADING DEVICES, DAY LIGHTING, INSULATION, THERMAL MASS, AND AN OVERALL ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.THE SCHOOL BEGAN ENROLLING STUDENTS IN THE FALL OF 1980.

OVERALL VIEW OF THE PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER PLANT AT THE PHOENIX AIRPORT.

 

THE PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM BEING BUILT AT SKY HARBOR INTER- NATIONAL AIRPORT, PHOENIX, AZ, WILL BE ONE OF THE LARGEST SOLAR CELL POWER PLANTS CONNECTED TO A UTILITY GRID. BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT AVAILABLE IN THE PHOENIX AREA, THE EXPERIMENTAL PLANT IS EXPECTED TO SUPPLY UP TO 440,000 KILOWATT-HOURS OF ENERGY ANNUALLY. THE SYSTEM HAS A TOTAL OF 80 PHOTOVOLTAIC CONCENTRATION ARRAYS WITH 34 PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULE/HEAT ASSEMBLIES IN EACH ARRAY. EACH MODULE/HEAT ASSEMBLY CONTAINS 8 SOLAR CELLS MOUNTED IN 2 HOUSINGS WITH 4 CIRCULAR FRESNEL-LENS PATTERNS PER HOUSING. THE 42 FEET BY 9 FEET SUN-TRACKING ARRAYS ARE MOUNTED ON A CONCRETE PEDESTAL FIVE FEET ABOVE GROUND. THIS SYSTEM WILL PRODUCE DIRECT CURRENT ELECTRICITY THAT WILL BE INVERTED TO ALTERNATING CURRENT ELECTRICITY BEFORE ENTERING THE UTILITY GRID.

THE SYSTEM PROVIDES POWER FOR THE FOLLOW- ING SERVICES: 40 FLUORESCENT LIGHTS, 1 WATER PUMP, 15 REFRIGERATOR/FREEZERS, 1 CLOTHES WASHER AND 1 SEWING MACHINE.
