One of the very first car manufacturers in the world, the French Panhard was originally called Panhard et Levassor, and was established as an automobile manufacturing concern by René Panhard and Émile Levassor in 1887. Based on a Daimler (later to become Mercedes) engine license, Daimler and Levassor became friends, and shared improvements with one another.

These first vehicles set many modern standards, but each was a one-off design. They used a clutch pedal to operate a chain-driven gearbox. The vehicle also featured a front-mounted radiator. An 1895 Panhard et Levassor is credited with the first modern transmission. For the 1894 Paris–Rouen Rally, Alfred Vacheron equipped his 3 kW (4 hp) with a steering wheel, believed to be one of the earliest employments of the principle. Panhard became one of the largest and most profitable manufacturers of automobiles before World War I.

In 1910, Panhard et Levassor began using the Sleve Valve design under license from the American, Knight, and from 1924 till 1940 all Panhard cars used sleeve valve engines. Under the presidency of Raymond Poincaré, which ran from 1913 till 1920, Panhard & Levassor's 18CV and 20CV models were the official presidential cars.

The last Panhard passenger car was built in 1967, and the company was then completely absorbed into Citroen and Michelin.

SAIL Amsterdam is a maritime event held once every five years in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Tall ships from all over the world visit the city to moor in its eastern harbour. SAIL Amsterdam 2025 is the tenth edition, and the first one since 2015 as the 2020 event was cancelled. It was one of the main events celebrating Amsterdam's 750th birthday. It was also 50 years since the first SAIL Amsterdam was held.

Architectural art. The "fortifications" were built from 1895 to 1902 to match the ancient church, originally built in 1016, then the current building was reconstructed in the florid late Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century and was extensively restored in the late 19th century.

That's over one thousand years of evolving architectural art. The "old world" never stops changing.

Down the street, the Buda Castle is undergoing extensive restorations even today, with large cranes rebuilding castle walls, buildings and fortresses ruined by time and war over the centuries.

In Other News: In case I don't get time to create and post my usual "leaving on another trip" announcement, I'll also make it on this post. I'll be leaving for my first trip of 2025 tomorrow, February 10th early in the morning. I'm headed for the last major Hawai'ian Island I haven't yet visited. I'll be spending five days on the Island of Oahu. It's high surf season on the North Shore so I hope to get some amazing wave and surfing shots, plus the usual amazing sunrise and sunset photos I love taking when in the tropics!
