A relatively unknown location in Amsterdam with a wide view over the water in the Eastern Docklands....
Location: Erstkade on Sporenburg next to the in 2018 constructed residential tower Steltloper with the Levantkade on the KNSM Eiland at the other side of the water.
Coordinates: Click on the link to see the exact location on Google Maps:
Reason: Exploring the city of Amsterdam by bike and findind this beaufitul view point over the Ersthaven on Sporenburg.
Sporenburg: Sporenburg is an artificial peninsula that was constructed in the 19th century in the Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam. The peninsula owes its name to its use as a shunting yard for the Dutch Railways.
Since the 1990s, the area has been redeveloped into a residential area. The district has some architectural value: the bridges over the Spoorwegbassin and the massive residential building De Sfinx and the slim residential tower De Steltloper.
Albertcomplex: This is the residential builting at the other side of the water.
|The complex is located on the south side of the KNSM island on the Levantkade. That former part of Amsterdam was redesigned in the 1990s under the direction of urban planner Jo Coenen, after the shipping company had left. The contract for the design of the building came from Housing Association Het Oosten. They called in the Belgian architect Bruno Albert.
He came up with a rectangular building along the Levantkade, which is essentially a closed block of six storeys with an inner garden. Albert gave this building block in the middle a circular building block of eight storeys (again with an inner garden), which has an opening to the Levantkade. This opening is closed by means of the Barcelona Square Fence designed by Narcisse Tordoir (which cannot be closed). In the north, the complex has access from the KNSM-Laan, which consists of a staircase by poet/artist Jouke Kleerebezem. The complex is designed in a neoclassical style.

Initially thinking this was also out on the 109, I had no idea about this service, the somewhat peculiar Spa Lift Shuttle.
Due to the funicular railway out of action, Shoreline operate a bus on certain days up to every 15 minutes in it's place, with a flat fare of just a quid a throw.
19 approaches the Beachcomber Island at the bottom of the cliff with a Spa Lift Replacement Service. Still showing signs of it's First life, this spent the bulk of it's career in Bath, being ousted only last year!!

This was the 14-52 departure to KX.
I was the driver through to Newcastle.
This was my final shift driving HST's following 19 years of working on them.
I enjoyed the 4hr 20 minute drive to Newcastle. The set performed perfectly. A fitting tribute to an iconic train type.
Thanks to Edinburgh based LNER driver Paul for taking this on my camera.
The End of an era.
This was my final visit to the depot with an HST.
I worked the set as fas as Newcastle as the 14-52 1E25 departure to KX.
This set was due to be withdrawn from service the following day.
It was also its last visit to Aberdeen.
She was also my very last HST driven that day since qualifying on the type in 2001.

I've been teaching my daughter a little bit about photography, and on evenings together like this, I'm reminded of the struggles and triumphs in my own learning journey.
Standing there at that moment, just looking at the horizon.. seeing how the sun is trying to break through the heavy fog, made me realize, this must be how people feel everyday when they are trying to break out of their comfort zone. So this year I will try and to put myself in situations where I don't feel comfortable and learn something from it, I want to change my thinking and just challenge myself. I believe that breaking through the safe environment might be my key to success :)
My daughter getting instructions for her covid 19 test. With the cases ramping up and her having a few symptoms we decided to get her tested. It has been a full year since this all started. This is her first test.
