A bone model made by French prisoners of war of the 80-gun, 2eme Rang, Bucentaure Class 2-decker Bucentaure at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007.

The Bucentaure Class was designed by Jacques-Noel Sane as an improved version of his very successful Tonnant Class. Twenty one Bucentaures were completed in 1804-33, 6 were broken up on the stocks and 2 cancelled before the keel was laid down.

The Bucentaure herself was built at Toulon Dockyard, being launched in 1802 and completed in 1904. She was the French flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, was captured by the British but recaptured soon after only for the very badly damaged ship to be wrecked in a gale. The survivors were rescued by another damaged survivor from Trafalgar, the Indomptable, but she was herself wrecked in the same storm with very few survivors.

The Bucentaure Class measured 182.6 ft x 47 ft x 23.6 ft, had a burthen of 2,034 tons (identical to the Tonnant Class) and initially the standard armament of 86 guns (even though rated 80!) was as follows (although this changed considerably over time and varied from ship-to-ship - some eventually carried 90 guns):

Gaillards (linked Quaterdeck + F’o’csle together): 18x12 pdrs + 6x36 pdr obusiers

Upper Deck: 32x24 pdrs

Lower Deck: 30x36 pdrs

{film} This was one of my "shit, I need to bring this camera back now" shots. Excuse the poor posture and the hair that badly needs a cut.

We found out last night that our offer on the house we checked out earlier this week was accepted. Inspection is starting today and if all goes well, we'll be able to move in at some point in mid to late January.
