September 20, 2014, the 175th aniversary of the railways in The Netherlands was celebrated. Trips with historic trains between Haarlem and Amsterdam (the first route), open doors at the Haarlem shops and the display of "1839" engine De Arend (Eagle) were the main ingredients of the festivities.

Not sure why but the local nickname of "Hippos" for these 175 units is appropriate somehow. They had a troubled introduction into service with many teething troubles. Built by Alstom they are not going to be repeated following closure of the UK factory and after the troubled service record. Spoilt by the garish exterior and especially interior colour scheme as well as the ridiculously bright internal lighting these are attractive DMUs with their Mk£ carriage-like big side windows and easy on the eye front end styling. This one has the re-branded Arrriva Trains livery and is seen departing Crewe for Manchester.

no injuries in class today. woo! lots to do before we leave friday, but i wanted a grand finale to the bubbles (and had so much fun with them--they're so unpredictable. i miss being a kid!). other bubbles i could have done but didn't at this time: champagne and a bubble bath. oh well.
my mom just grabbed one of my sour patch kids and ate it. i started to tell her she wouldn't like it, but the look on her face was pretty great, so i'm glad i didn't.
