Switching at Hoffman as they make up an outbound train. I would have chased this but they put a poorly painted and worn road engine on the point.in front of it. Although that may have been temporary since the 1616 was supposed to lead.

Union Pacific honors President Abraham Lincoln’s legacy connecting the nation and unleashing economic innovation with a specially painted commemorative locomotive, No. 1616 – a symbolic tribute to the nation’s 16th president. Lincoln’s signing of the Pacific Railway Act of 1862 created Union Pacific and authorized the construction of the transcontinental railroad, connecting the country during a pivotal time and laying the foundation for America’s freight rail supply chain.
Vanaf 1970 werden er door het Rijk uitgebreide investeringen in de NS gedaan, zowel in de infrastructuur als in het personenvervoer. In eerste instantie profiteerden de goederenactiviteiten van die investeringen. Vanwege de crisis in het midden van de jaren tachtig was men genoodzaakt deze investeringen te verminderen. Na een grondig onderzoek in de NS organisatie bleek het goederenvervoer onvoldoende rendement op te leveren. NS zou zich voortaan meer toeleggen op het reizigersvervoer.
Dit resulteerde vanaf 1 januari in 1994 in een nieuwe organisatiestructuur. De NS werd opgedeeld in meerdere verschillende bedrijven zoals NS Reizigers, NS Stations en NS Infra. NS Goederen is sinds die datum eveneens verzelfstandigd tot een afzonderlijk bedrijf met een nieuwe naam: NS Cargo. In 2000 bracht de NS hun dochterondeneming voor goederenvervoer onder in Railion, een gezamenlijke onderneming met DB AG. In 2003 trok de NS zich uit Railion terug en gingen de goederenactiviteiten verder onder Railion Nederland.
Jarenlang werden de goederentreinen in Nederland getrokken door locomotieven van de serie 1600 en 6400, en ook werd de van oorsprong Russische BR 232 veelvuldig in Nederland ingezet. Sinds de toelating van de locserie 189 in Nederland en de opening van de Betuweroute in 2007 liep de inzet van de oudere locomotieven op het hoofdrailnet langzaam terug.
Op 8 februari 2008 is Railion-loc 1616 als losse loc richting Venlo gereden om daar een containertrein op te halen. In een alweer laagstaand zonnetje kon de lok, die de stad "Oldenzaal" als wapen heeft, met een vermoedelijk uit Basel SBB gekomen trein worden vastgelegd bij Breda Takkebijsters op weg naar de Kijfhoek.
In die tijd was de inzet voor de NS-gele 1600'en voor dit soort treinen nog vrij standaard. Niet lang daarna ging Railion Nederland verder als DB Schanker Rail Nederland. Het lag in de lijn der verwachting dat ook het materieelpark snel de rode DB-huisstijl zou krijgen, iets wat vanaf 2012 ook daadwerkelijk zou gebeuren. Toch duurde het tot april 2020 voordat de locomotieven van de serie 1600 daadwerkelijk bij Railion opvolger DB Cargo het veld zullen gaan ruimen...
