The long vacant Michigan Central Station. Finally seeing some new life after decades of neglect. The Ford Motor Company has recently purchased the property. I was privileged to be invited and get some shots in.

This part of the building was the depot where the trains departed and arrived. I’m hoping that it’ll be a train station seeing that freight trains pass through here occasionally. It’s not too far from the train tunnel in Southwest Detroit.

I was surprised to see a fleet of street sweepers and garbage trucks cleaning up 15th St. The new contraflow bike lane had become covered in leaves and acorns, so it was certainly welcome. I was saddened, however, to discover that the reason for the frenzied cleaning was because Mayor Adrian Fenty and Councilmember Jack Evens were doing a photo-op bike ride on the new lane that afternoon. It just makes it seem like things only happen in order to make the elected officials look good. I'd rather have moderate cleaning on a periodic basis than an all-out war on debris only when the mayor is ready to visit. 15th & R NW, Washington, DC.

The formal opening of the Elks Club building in the old Wm. B. Simpson property at 32 15th Street was held September 21, 1904. The old residence had been completely remodeled, a third story added, and the exterior "handsomely adorned." An auditorium with a seating capacity of 800 occupied the first floor, with gallery seating extending to the second floor. A dining hall and billiard rooms were also located on the second story. On the third floor, several workrooms lined a large and lavishly decorated lodge room with a hand-painted ceiling mural of allegorical and mythological creatures, several stuffed elks heads (one studded with incandescent lamps), mahogany furniture upholstered in sterling leather, green plush curtains, and a "handsome" gong, "a gift of the ladies, used for, the eleven o'clock tribute to departed members."

The plans for the remodel of the old Simpson residence were designed by the Wheeling architecture firm Geisey & Faris.

The Wheeling Elks Lodge No. 28 was organized June 22, 1884, and incorporated October 13, 1900.

The modern addition to the Elks Club that extended to Eoff street was added in 1931.

The property was sold by the Elks Club in 2005. It now houses the Harris Law Offices.
