Red-spotted Purple butterfly flights are short in duration and at low altitudes, flying only about two to three feet off the ground. These butterflies spend their days in deciduous woodlands, along the edges of the forest in shady areas, including roadsides. When males are searching for mates, they generally try to defend areas that have high female visitation rates. Christopher Whitworth Whall (1849-1924) was the son of a clergyman and grew up in Thurning, Huntingdonshire. He studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools in London under Frederick Leighton but in the later 1880s decided to learn the processes of making stained glass. He designed for James Powell & Sons but was frustrated by the lack of control over the completed windows. In the field of stained glass he had a profound effect as a practitioner, teacher (at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London) and writer. His book Stained Glass Work, published in 1905, remains profoundly influential to this day.

A Needham's Skimmer lights on a plant stalk in the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The Needham's Skimmer is a close relative of Golden-winged Skimmer and can be difficult to distinguish with suboptimal views. Needham's is generally a coastal plain species, and is usually most common in the vicinity of the coast. This dragonfly utilizes ponds, lakes, and marshes, including coastal ones, but usually does not occur at the same sites as Golden-winged Skimmer, perhaps a case of competitive exclusion.
