Another good day out and about

Meh.......last minute shot.

This September 11th, I went downtown to see the Memorial site and to remember those who fell on that tragic final day of the World Trade Center.

Although this is the 13th anniversary of 9/11, this was my first time going there. In fact, except for one day last week, this was my first time in this area since the towers fell. I didn't have any family members or friends who were involved in the tragedy but, just the same, I had strong emotions about it and, after 9/11 happened, I found myself starting to avoid this part of the city. It was not a conscious decision to purposely stay away, more like other areas around Manhattan had suddenly became much more interesting to me. The longer I stayed away, the easier it became not to return.

As I look back on it now, I think that by staying away from, and not seeing, the 9/11 site, I didn't have to think about it or deal with the emotions or feelings it brought out. I knew, of course, that it really happened but, if I never saw it, it didn't really seem like something that had happened right here in my home town. Avoidance is not a good thing though, and I'm glad I finally got over it and was able to come to terms with the horrible events of that day. Now, I'd like to visit downtown again sometime soon. I feel like I've been missing so much. It's good to be back!

Sorry that the commentary for this shot seemed to ramble on so much. If you made it this far, thank you so much for your time.

This portrait of the prime crew of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission was taken the day after NASA announced the crew assignment. Left to right are Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot; Neil A. Armstrong, commander; and Michael Collins, command module pilot. They were photographed in front of a lunar module mockup beside Building 1 at what is now Johnson Space Center following a press conference at the Center to introduce the crew.

11. Addio amore, addio

The small church in the middle, surrounded by an old graveyard, a few houses circled around, to the left the road ends at a Belgian military cemetery.

There are a few British and Commonwealth graves as well. But mostly Belgians… they seem to get less attention, yet don’t forget it was there, in Flanders, that the fierce battles happened and the years of occupation!

If you want to hear the sound of silence, that is the place to go, or so one would think?

The rustling of the poplars and light breeze waves the leaves of the trees and we can hear sparrows twittering nearby, their chorus changes into a chirping frenzy, probably to warn of danger to the birds sunbathing in the soft earth, between the carpet of green and the rows upon rows of headstones, uniform, with the Belgian flag enamelled into the stone, above the names, the age, the rank.

All those young lives curtailed, so much sadness, the silence has descended within me.

Envy... for the Seven Deadly Sins mini challenge in my Flickr Project 365 (+1) group.

Another gummi shot? I know, I've gone down this route a time or two before, but I love pictures of candy, particularly colorful gummi bears!

I set up this shot to capture the envy I feel. It's really strong, and it's embarrassing to admit, but it's probably not a surprise to anyone who has known me for any period of time, yet I don't think I let this envy show outwardly too often.

I am extremely envious of anyone who gets to be with her or his significant other on a regular basis. Completely jealous. Green with envy, you might even say.

I am not writing this looking for suggestions for how to reduce distance in my relationship. Advice is not requested at this time.

I know, I chose to be in a long distance relationship. We manage the distance well by managing to see each other quite a lot. This relationship is very good for me, otherwise I would not remain in it. We emotionally connect so well... and we laugh together so much... I am thankful for what we have.

Being in a long distance relationship is not so awful. I do enjoy the opportunity to visit my boyfriend's city. I even sometimes enjoy the process of travel. It's nice to have independence from time to time when we're apart. I have time to sort through my own issues and stress and problems in a way that makes sense for me, and I have the opportunity to be selfish when I am alone. I suppose this can be a bonus.

I am not under any illusion that being together eliminates problems. Being face to face can create a whole new set of issues. If anyone knows this, it's me. Yet I want to face those kinds of challenges together. I want a chance at a life together that doesn't require air travel. I don't want to keep my elite frequent flier status.

It's not like I look at people in couples and direct negativity toward them, thinking something similar as Bridget Jones did when she would write in her diary about "smug marrieds." Still, I wonder if people really appreciate what they have when they have it. It is really hard for me to hear about families or couples who are hitting important milestones in their lives, such as moving in together or having children or couples who get jobs in the same cities... I don't necessarily want children, but the idea that some people are getting to progress in their lives together while mine is in such a different place, such an uncertain place... that is harder for me than I'd like to admit.

Envy... it's not so pretty, but the gummis! They're cute!

Looking back through photos from my last trip to seoul I realize how many photos I have not shared here or elsewhere. I plan on remedying that by slowly posting more of them as I have time. This one I had also shot with the 5D and posted as a desktop which is probably why I never bothered sharing this version here but personally, I prefer this to the other which did not have YoungDoo's hands in the shot. Or maybe they are distracting.. hmm, I think it adds narrative. Sorry, I'm railing, so much for the calm and collected silent poster technique.
