On display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Lancaster County, the Pennsylvania Railroad 1187 was built in 1888 by Pennsylvania Railroad, Altoona Works, Altoona, PA. It remained in service until 1939.
The Pennsylvania Railroad’s Class R (later H3) steam locomotives became the primary mainline freight locomotive. The Altoona Shops built more than 825 between 1885 and 1898. Its 2-8-0, or “Consolidation” type wheel arrangement became the most popular design for freight locomotives across the country.
The locomotive design was the first to introduce the Belpaire Firebox. Named for its inventor Alfred Belpaire, this design provided greater strength than previous designs and allowed for more space for steam, as well as more area for combustion.
Fun Fact: By 1924, the Pennsylvania Railroad had over 3,300 class H locomotives in service, which accounted for 44% of its entire locomotive roster. No. 1187 remains the sole survivor of the Class R (reclassified H3 in 1897).
Field Trip - Ashwell Quarry - 11/06/17
On Sunday night I did another field trip because of the warm weather... but still knackered from the previous night I did struggle a bit through the night as expected.
I arrived at 8pm, did a little netting and then relaxed for a bit before setting up five traps over the reserve.
All of the traps were sited out of the wind as this would hopefully make the moths easier to spot and encourage them to settle better.
The night actually started cloudy, quite contrary to the clear skies predicted (Not that I was in a position to moan, this meant the temperature would hold up better). The sky did finally clear and the wind increased with some big gusts and a temperature drop to 11 degrees by 2am meant that it was time to pack up.
Highlights for me were my first Hertfordshire records of Dark Spectacle and Telechrysis tripuncta, both quite uncommon moths in the County.
It was also nice to see Epinotia signatana, one of my favourite Epinotia's with the distinct black bar on the wing and some really fresh Geometer's, namely Common Emerald and Large Twin-spot Carpet.

A change in weather yields a new moth
Wednesday (and as per a previous post) I was scheduled to go out but in brief my wife wasn't very well and the weather was a little iffy after a huge thunderstorm on Tuesday night with some localised downpours.
Conditions seemed better on Wednesday but the expected temperature of 28 degrees never materialised and we topped out at 22 degrees here, which is still relatively respectful.
The trap was set-up with the rain cover firmly on expecting more rain, which did come at some point in the night.
By the morning, the catch was quite pleasing with a new Tortrix moth for me and always a sweetner adding it to the garden list, Adoxophyes orana the Summer Fruit Tortrix and making it the 1st County record for Hertfordshire!
Other nice moths included a year first Tree-lichen Beauty, a moth that is increasing its range across the Country and the last 3 years it has been recorded from my garden.
Chinese Character was also very welcome and I have had just one record in 2013 and 2015 so far, so as you can see it is a bi-yearly singleton species and very consistent.
Mompha propinquella returned after a 4 year absence, a pretty unusual little moth that is very photogenic.
Also I’m pretty sure I have both Acleris laterana and comariana, the latter a rare moth in Herts having caught the second County record many years ago on the farm, laterana would be a year first and comariana would be a garden first. Both will need dissecting to be 100% the photos look convincing.
Epiblema costipunctana was back after its debut year last year, a thistle feeder and a most welcome second garden record.
And finally Zelleria hepariella was a new species of Micro Moth for the garden having recently recorded one at Scales Part in North-east Herts, not a common moth for me I must add.
As I finish typing, Saturday has been a complete wash-out and last night's catch was completely sodden...more on that soon.
