After the almost the entire fleet of the HLE 11 series went for scrap last year, there was a concern that not a single unit left preserved. Fortunately this rumour proved incorrect and the 1187 found its way to Patrimonie SNCB. One of its first appearances was last weekend's photo shooting afternoon in the Tractiewerkplaats Antwerpen-Noord. I dare to say the HLE 11 was the highlight attraction of the afternoon.

Built: 1888 by Pennsylvania Railroad, Altoona Works, Altoona, Pennsylvania

Retired: 1939

The Pennsylvania Railroad’s Class R (later H3) steam locomotives became the primary mainline freight locomotive. The Altoona Shops built more than 825 between 1885 and 1898. Its 2-8-0, or “Consolidation” type wheel arrangement became the most popular design for freight locomotives across the country.

The locomotive design was the first to introduce the Belpaire Firebox. Named for its inventor Alfred Belpaire, this design provided greater strength than previous designs and allowed for more space for steam, as well as more area for combustion.

De nieuwe NMBS 1187 werd voor de trein naar Parijs gezet. De oorspronkelijk loc (2551) rijdt in opzending.

In de tijd dat de locomotieven van de Reeks 11.8 nog reden in de Benelux treinen vond de periodieke onderhoud van de ATB installatie plaats in Zaanstraat. Omdat de lokken overdag niet gemist konden worden vinden de werkzaamheden nachts plaats.

Zo staat de NMBS 1186 te wachten op het ATB herstel spoor tot dat de werkzaamheden zullen starten. Op de achtergrond is nog een stuurrijtuig te zien van DDM 1.

Om dit soort redenen ben ik zelf nooit zo happig op het op foto zetten van een van achteren naderende trein; de pantograaf precies verkeerd bij het portaal... ;-(

Toch post ik deze foto even hier op flickr aangezien ik zelf weinig beeldmateriaal heb van a) een duwende 11.8 en b) de combi 11.8 met ICRm in de HSA kleuren.

Op de foto duwt de NMBS 1187 haar stam ICR rijtuigen richting Amsterdam voorbij Roosendaal Borchwerf.
