It was a cloudy afternoon but the the sky cleared just in time for a brilliant sunset. I took this shot by the waters behind the Esplanade; the location was packed with at least a hundred other people, many of them aspiring (or perhaps accomplished) photographers armed with the tools of the trade: DSLRs, tripods, and much patience. Some people dislike the hundreds of white plastic balls that littered the water; I feel that they add a certain uniqueness to the scene. Somehow it isn’t surprising that our waters are just as packed as our land.

Leiria is an interesting city, with a beautiful historical centre, but it’s the Castle that attracts all the attention.
It’s a large structure of multiple buildings, inside a fortified wall, and its historical relevance is undeniable.
Particularly beautiful is Paço de D. João I, a Palace dwelling area inside the castle, named after the iconic Portuguese King. Also stunning, the ruins of a church, Santa Maria do Castelo, one of those places with a magical atmosphere where the vegetation took hold among the ancient stones.
