Cavendish Mews is a smart set of flats in Mayfair where flapper and modern woman, the Honourable Lettice Chetwynd has set up home after coming of age and gaining her allowance. To supplement her already generous allowance, and to break away from dependence upon her family, Lettice has established herself as a society interior designer, so her flat is decorated with a mixture of elegant antique Georgian pieces and modern Art Deco furnishings, using it as a showroom for what she can offer to her well heeled clients.
Today however we are northwest of Lettice’s flat, in the working-class London suburb of Harlesden where Edith, Lettice’s maid, is paying an unexpected call on her parents whilst her mistress is away enjoying the distractions of the London Season. Edith’s father, George, works at the McVitie and Price biscuit factory in Harlesden, and her mother, Ada, takes in laundry at home. They live in a small, two storey brick terrace house which opens out directly onto the street, and is far removed from the grandeur of Lettice’s flat, but has always been a cosy and welcoming home for Edith. Even before she walks through the glossy black painted front door, Edith can smell the familiar scent of a mixture of Lifebuoy Soap, Borax and Robin’s Starch, which means her mother is washing the laundry of others wealthier than she in the terrace’s kitchen at the rear of the house.
“Mum!” Edith calls out cheerily as she opens the unlocked front door and walks in. “Mum, it’s me!”
“Edith!” Ada gasps in delighted surprise, glancing up to the door leading from the hallway into the kitchen. “I wasn’t expecting you. What a lovely surprise!”
Ada rises from her chair at the worn kitchen table and embraces her daughter lovingly. Holding her at arm’s length, she admires her three-quarter length black coat and purple rose and black feather decorated straw hat. “Look at you, my darling girl.” The older woman self-consciously pushes loose strands of her mousey brown hair back behind her ears. Chuckling awkwardly, she remarks with a downwards glance. “You’re far too fancy for the likes of us now, Edith.”
“Don’t talk nonsense, Mum!” Edith dismisses her mother’s comment with a flap of her hand. "My coat came from a Petticoat Lane* second-hand clothes stall. I picked it up dead cheap and remodelled it myself.”
“Taking after your old Mum then?” Ada remarks with a hint of pride.
“You taught me everything I know about sewing, Mum, and I’ll always be grateful for that.”
The joyful smile suddenly fades from Ada’s face as it clouds in concern. “But it’s Tuesday today. You don’t have Tuesdays off. Is everything alright, love?”
“It’s fine, Mum.” Edith assures her mother, placing a calming hand on her mother’s shoulder with one hand as she places her basket on the crowded kitchen table with the other. “Miss Lettice has gone to stay with friends on the Isle of Wight for Cowes Week**, so I thought I’d pop in and visit since I have a bit of free time whilst she’s away.”
“Oh! That’s alright then!” the older woman sighs with relief, fanning herself as she lowers herself back into her seat.
Feeling the stuffiness in the room from the lighted range and the moisture from the steaming tubs of washing, Edith takes off her coat and hangs it on a hook by the back door. She then places her hat on one of the carved knobs of the ladderback chair drawn up to the table next to her mother’s usual seat.
“Oh don’t put it there, love.” Ada chides. “It might get damaged. Such a pretty hat should sit on the table where it’s safe.”
“It’s nothing special, Mum. This came from Petticoat Lane too, and it’s not new. I decorated the hat with bits and bobs I picked up from a Whitechapel haberdasher Miss Lettice’s char***, Mrs. Boothby, told me about.”
“Well, homemade or not, it’s too pretty to hang there.”
“It’s my hat, Mum, and I promise you, it’ll be fine there.
“Well, suit yourself, love. Anyway, your timing is perfect. I just filled Brown Betty****. Grab yourself a cup and bring over the biscuit tin. Your Dad will be home for lunch soon. He’ll be glad to see you.”
Edith walks over to the big, dark Welsh dresser that dominates one side of the tiny kitchen and picks up a pretty floral teacup and saucer from among the mismatched crockery on its shelves: one of her mother’s many market finds that helped to bring elegance and beauty to Edith’s childhood home. She looks fondly at the battered McVitie and Price’s tin. “How’s Dad?”
“Oh, things are looking up for him.” Ada says proudly as she flips open her large sewing basket and fossicks through it looking for a spool of brightly coloured blue cotton thread.
“Oh?” Edith queries.
“Yes, there’s talk of him being made a line manager. Isn’t that a turn up for the books?”
“Oh Mum! That’s wonderful news.” The younger woman enthuses as she puts the empty teacup, saucer and biscuit tin on the table and sits down next to her mother. “You might be finally able to pack all this in.” She waves her hand about the kitchen at the tubs of washing, drying laundry and pressed linens.
“Oh I don’t know about that, Edith. Anyway, I have built up a good reputation over the years.”
“Yes,” Edith remarks scornfully. “For charging too little for the excellent work you do.” She looks over, past her mother, to a neat pile of lace edged linens. “What’s that you’re doing now, Mum?”
“Oh it’s just some work for Mrs. Hounslow. She wants her new sheets and pillowcases monogrammed.”
“And how much are you, not being paid, for that, Mum?” Edith emphasises.
“Oh Edith! Mrs. Hounslow’s a widow.”
“I know, Mum. I’ve grown up hearing about how Mrs. Hounslow’s husband died a hero in the siege of Mafeking in the Boer War. But I’ve never heard of her scraping for a penny for a scrap to eat. And where are those pretty lace trimmed sheets from?”
“Bishop’s in the High Street.”
“See! No second-hand sheets for old Widow Hounslow!”
“Now I won’t have a bad word said about her, Edith.” Ada wags her finger admonishingly at her daughter before selecting a needle from the red cotton lined lid of her basket and threads it. “She’s helped pay for many a meal in this house with her sixpences and shillings over the years. You should be grateful to her.”
“Pshaw!” Edith raises her eyes to the ceiling above. “I wish you’d let me help out more, Mum. I live in, so I don’t have the expenses of lodgings, and Miss Lettice pays me well.”
“Now, I won’t hear of it, Edith.” Ada raises her palms to her daughter, still clutching the threaded needle between her right index finger and thumb. “You earned that money with hard work at Miss Chetwynd’s. You pay enough to help keep us as it is.”
“But Mum,” Edith pours tea into her mother’s and then her own teacup. “If Dad does get this better job at McVitie’s, and I paid you a bit more of my wage, you probably really could give up washing, sewing and mending for the likes of Mrs. Hounslow.”
“And then what would I do, Edith?” The older woman adds a dash of milk to her tea.
“Well, you might like to put your feet up for a bit or buy a few nice new things for around here. Get rid of our battered old breadbin and those cannisters.” She points to the offending worn white enamel green trimmed pieces on the dresser.
“Oh, so we’re not grand enough then, Miss Edith?” Ada says in mock offence as she looks down her nose at her daughter and she raises herself and sits a little more erectly in her seat. “I love my breadbin thank you very much. That was a wedding gift from your Aunt Maude.”
“You know that’s not what I mean,” Edith replies, shaking her head exasperatedly. Adding milk and sugar to her own tea she continues, “I just want you to have nice things, Mum: things like those I have at Miss Lettice’s.”
“I’m so pleased you like it there, love.” Ada places a careworn hand lovingly on top of her daughter’s.
“Oh Mum, it’s so much better than Mrs. Plaistow’s was. It’s so much smaller than their townhouse, and I don’t have to traipse up and down stairs all day. There’s a gas stove, so I don’t have to fetch coal in or blacklead grates. Even if there were, Miss Lettice has Mrs. Boothby do all the hard graft I used to have to do at the Plaistow’s.”
“And Miss Chetwynd? She’s still being good to you?”
“Yes Mum.” Edith takes a sip of her tea. “I still haven’t broken her of the habit of just waltzing into the kitchen whenever she feels like it, rather than ringing the bell.”
“And her, a lord’s daughter.” Ada tuts, shaking her head.
“Well, a Viscount’s daughter at any rate.”
“You think she’d know better.”
“I’m sure she’s different when she goes home to Wiltshire. It does sound like a very grand house.”
“So much grander than here, Edith.”
“Now don’t start again, Mum. You know I didn’t mean anything by what I said before. Anyway. I have a something for you, but I shan’t give it to you if you’re going to be contrary!” Edith teases.
“Contrary indeed!” Ada snorts derisively.
Edith takes a bulky parcel wrapped in cream butcher’s paper tied up with brightly coloured string from her basket and places it carefully on the table before her mother.
“Well what is it?” Ada asks in surprise.
“Why don’t you open it, Mum, and find out.” Edith replies playfully in return.
With trembling fingers Ada tugs at the knot in the string. Loosening it causes the protective layer of paper to fall noisily away to reveal a beautiful, glazed teapot in the shape of a cottage with a thatched roof with the chimney as the lid.
“Oh Edith, love!” gasps Ada. “It’s beautiful!”
“Since you won’t let me give you more money, I may as well buy you some nice things Mum!”
“Oh this must have cost a fortune!” Ada appraises the paintwork on the pot. “For shame, Edith! You shouldn’t have spent your money on me.”
“Nonsense Mum! I bought this at the Caledonian Markets***** where it was so reasonably priced as it was on its own and didn’t have the milk jug and sugar bowl to match. Do you like it?”
“Like it, Edith? Oh, I love it!” Ada hugs her daughter, batting her eyelids as she attempts to keep back the tears of appreciation and joy.
“Good! Then we can have tea out of this, rather than old Brown Betty!”
“What?” Ada cries. “Oh no, I can’t well do that! This teapot is far too nice to use everyday! There’s nothing wrong with Brown Betty. Brown Betty was your Great Grandma’s!” She runs her hand lovingly over the handle of the pot. “No, I’ll keep this pot for good. I’ll take it up to the parlour and we’ll use it on Christmas Day, when you and your brother are home.”
“Oh Mum!” Edith sighs, shaking her head in loving despair at her mother who beams with delight at her new present.
*Petticoat Lane Market is a fashion and clothing market in Spitalfields, London. It consists of two adjacent street markets. Wentworth Street Market and Middlesex Street Market. Originally populated by Huguenots fleeing persecution in France, Spitalfields became a center for weaving, embroidery and dying. From 1882, a wave of Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution in eastern Europe settled in the area and Spitalfields then became the true heart of the clothing manufacturing district of London. 'The Lane' was always renowned for the 'patter' and showmanship of the market traders. It was also known for being a haven for the unsavoury characters of London’s underworld and was rife with prostitutes during the late Victorian era. Unpopular with the authorities, as it was largely unregulated and in some sense illegal, as recently as the 1930s, police cars and fire engines were driven down ‘The Lane’, with alarm bells ringing, to disrupt the market.
**Cowes Week is one of the longest-running regular regattas in the world, and a fixture of the London Season. With forty daily sailing races, up to one thousand boats, and eight thousand competitors ranging from Olympic and world-class professionals to weekend sailors, it is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. Having started in 1826, the event is held in August each year on the Solent (the area of water between southern England and the Isle of Wight made tricky by strong double tides). It is focussed on the small town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
***A charwoman, chargirl, or char, jokingly charlady, is an old-fashioned occupational term, referring to a paid part-time worker who comes into a house or other building to clean it for a few hours of a day or week, as opposed to a maid, who usually lives as part of the household within the structure of domestic service. In the 1920s, chars usually did all the hard graft work that paid live-in domestics would no longer do as they looked for excuses to leave domestic service for better paying work in offices and factories.
****A Brown Betty is a type of teapot, round and with a manganese brown glaze known as Rockingham glaze. In the Victorian era, when tea was at its peak of popularity, tea brewed in the Brown Betty was considered excellent. This was attributed to the design of the pot which allowed the tea leaves more freedom to swirl around as the water was poured into the pot, releasing more flavour with less bitterness.
***** The original Caledonian Market, renown for antiques, buried treasure and junk, was situated in in a wide cobblestoned area just off the Caledonian Road in Islington in 1921 when this story is set. Opened in 1855 by Prince Albert, and originally called the Metropolitan Meat Markets, it was supplementary to the Smithfield Meat Market. Arranged in a rectangle, the market was dominated by a forty six metre central clock tower. By the early Twentieth Century, with the diminishing trade in live animals, a bric-a-brac market developed and flourished there until after the Second World War when it moved to Bermondsey, south of the Thames, where it flourishes today. The Islington site was developed in 1967 into the Market Estate and an open green space called Caledonian Park. All that remains of the original Caledonian Markets is the wonderful Victorian clock tower.
This cluttered, yet cheerful domestic scene is not all it seems to be at first glance, for it is made up of part of my 1:12 size dollhouse miniatures collection. Some pieces come from my own childhood. Other items I acquired as an adult through specialist online dealers and artists who specialise in 1:12 miniatures.
Fun things to look for in this tableau include:
The central focus of our story, sitting on Ada’s table, is the cottage ware teapot. Made by French ceramicist and miniature artisan Valerie Casson, it has been decorated authentically and matches in perfect detail its life-size Price Washington ‘Ye Olde Cottage Teapot’ counterparts. The top part of the thatched rood and central chimney form the lid, just like the real thing. Valerie Casson is renown for her meticulously crafted and painted miniature ceramics.
Surrounding the cottage ware teapot are non-matching teacups, saucers, a milk jug and sugar bowl, all of which have come from different miniature stockists both in Australia and the United Kingdom. The Brown Betty teapot in the foreground came from The Dolls House Shop in the United Kingdom.
Sitting atop a stack of neatly folded 1:12 size linens sits Ada’s wicker sewing basket. Sitting open it has needles stuck into the padded lid, whilst inside it are a tape measure, knitting needles, balls of wool, reels of cotton and a pair of shears. All the items and the basket, except for the shears, are hand made by Mrs. Denton of Muffin Lodge in the United Kingdom. The taupe knitting on the two long pins that serve as knitting needles is properly knitted and cast on. The shears with black handles in the basket open and close. Made of metal, they came from Doreen Jeffries’ Small Wonders Miniature Shop in the United Kingdom. The blue cotton reel and silver sewing scissors come from an E-Bay stockist of miniatures based in the United Kingdom.
Sitting on the table in the foreground is a McVitie and Price’s Small Petite Beurre Biscuits tin, containing a selection of different biscuits. The biscuits were made by hand of polymer clay by former chef turned miniature artisan, Frances Knight. Her work is incredibly detailed and realistic, and she says that she draws her inspiration from her years as a chef and her imagination. McVitie's (Originally McVitie and Price) is a British snack food brand owned by United Biscuits. The name derives from the original Scottish biscuit maker, McVitie and Price, Ltd., established in 1830 on Rose Street in Edinburgh, Scotland. The company moved to various sites in the city before completing the St. Andrews Biscuit Works factory on Robertson Avenue in the Gorgie district in 1888. The company also established one in Glasgow and two large manufacturing plants south of the border, in Heaton Chapel, Stockport, and Harlesden, London (where Edith’s father works). McVitie and Price's first major biscuit was the McVitie's Digestive, created in 1892 by a new young employee at the company named Alexander Grant, who later became the managing director of the company. The biscuit was given its name because it was thought that its high baking soda content served as an aid to food digestion. The McVitie's Chocolate Homewheat Digestive was created in 1925. Although not their core operation, McVitie's were commissioned in 1893 to create a wedding cake for the royal wedding between the Duke of York and Princess Mary, who subsequently became King George V and Queen Mary. This cake was over two metres high and cost one hundred and forty guineas. It was viewed by 14,000 and was a wonderful publicity for the company. They received many commissions for royal wedding cakes and christening cakes, including the wedding cake for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip and Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Under United Biscuits McVitie's holds a Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth II.
Also on Ada’s table in the foreground there are several packets of Edwardian cleaning and laundry brands that were in common use in the early Twentieth Century in every household, rich or poor. These are Sunlight Soap, Robin’s Starch, Jumbo Blue and Imp Washer Soap. All these packets were made by Little Things Dollhouse Miniatures in Lancashire.
Sunlight Soap was first introduced in 1884 by William Hesketh Lever (1st Viscount Leverhulme) and introduced to the market in 1904. It was produced at Port Sunlight in Wirrel, Merseyside, a model village built by Lever Brothers for the workers of their factories which produced the popular soap brands Lux, Lifebuoy and Sunlight.
Before the invention of aerosol spray starch, the product of choice in many homes of all classes was Robin starch. Robin Starch was a stiff white powder like cornflour to which water had to be added. When you made up the solution, it was gloopy, sticky with powdery lumps, just like wallpaper paste or grout. The garment was immersed evenly in that mixture and then it had to be smoothed out. All the stubborn starchy lumps had to be dissolved until they were eliminated – a metal spoon was good for bashing at the lumps to break them down. Robins Starch was produced by Reckitt and Sons who were a leading British manufacturer of household products, notably starch, black lead, laundry blue, and household polish. They also produced Jumbo Blue, which was a whitener added to a wash to help delay the yellowing effect of older cotton. Rekitt and Sons were based in Kingston upon Hull. Isaac Reckitt began business in Hull in 1840, and his business became a private company Isaac Reckitt and Sons in 1879, and a public company in 1888. The company expanded through the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. It merged with a major competitor in the starch market J. and J. Colman in 1938 to form Reckitt and Colman.
Imp Washer Soap was manufactured by T. H. Harris and Sons Limited, a soap manufacturers, tallow melters and bone boiler. Introduced after the Great War, Imp Washer Soap was a cheaper alternative to the more popular brands like Sunlight, Hudsons and Lifebuoy soaps. Imp Washer Soap was advertised as a free lathering and economical cleaner. T. H. Harris and Sons Limited also sold Mazo soap energiser which purported to improve the quality of cleaning power of existing soaps.
Edith’s black dyed straw hat with purple roses and black feathers was made by an unknown artisan. 1:12 size miniature hats made to such exacting standards of quality and realism are often far more expensive than real hats are. When you think that it would sit comfortably on the tip of your index finger, yet it could cost in excess of $150.00 or £100.00, it is an extravagance. American artists seem to have the monopoly on this skill and some of the hats that I have seen or acquired over the years are remarkable. This hat is part of a larger collection I bought from an American miniature collector Marilyn Bickel.
In the background you can see Ada’s dark Welsh dresser cluttered with household items. Like Ada’s table, the Windsor chair and the ladderback chair to the left of the photo, I have had the dresser since I was a child. The shelves of the dresser have different patterned crockery and silver pots on them which have come from different miniature stockists both in Australia and the United Kingdom. There are also some rather worn and beaten looking enamelled cannisters and a bread tin in the typical domestic Art Deco design and kitchen colours of the 1920s, cream and green. Aged on purpose, these artisan pieces I recently acquired from The Dolls’ House Shop in the United Kingdom. There are also tins of various foods which would have been household staples in the 1920s when canning and preservation revolutinised domestic cookery. Amongst other foods on the dresser are a tin of Macfie’s Finest Black Treacle, two jars of P.C. Flett and Company jam, a tin of Heinz marinated apricots, a jar of Marmite and some Oxo stock cubes. All these items are 1:12 size artisan miniatures made by Little Things Dollhouse Miniatures in Lancashire, with great attention to detail paid to their labels and the shapes of their jars and cans.
Robert Andrew Macfie sugar refiner was the first person to use the term term Golden Syrup in 1840, a product made by his factory, the Macfie sugar refinery, in Liverpool. He also produced black treacle.
P.C. Flett and Company was established in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands by Peter Copeland Flett. He had inherited a small family owned ironmongers in Albert Street Kirkwall, which he inherited from his maternal family. He had a shed in the back of the shop where he made ginger ale, lemonade, jams and preserves from local produce. By the 1920s they had an office in Liverpool, and travelling representatives selling jams and preserves around Great Britain. I am not sure when the business ceased trading.
The American based Heinz food processing company, famous for its Baked Beans, 57 varieties of soups and tinend spaghetti opened a factory in Harlesden in 1919, providing a great deal of employment for the locals who were not already employed at McVitie and Price.
Marmite is a food spread made from yeast extract which although considered remarkably English, was in fact invented by German scientist Justus von Liebig although it was originally made in the United Kingdom. It is a by-product of beer brewing and is currently produced by British company Unilever. The product is notable as a vegan source of B vitamins, including supplemental vitamin B. Marmite is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, salty, powerful flavour. This distinctive taste is represented in the marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it." Such is its prominence in British popular culture that the product's name is often used as a metaphor for something that is an acquired taste or tends to polarise opinion.
Oxo is a brand of food products, including stock cubes, herbs and spices, dried gravy, and yeast extract. The original product was the beef stock cube, and the company now also markets chicken and other flavour cubes, including versions with Chinese and Indian spices. The cubes are broken up and used as flavouring in meals or gravy or dissolved into boiling water to produce a bouillon. Oxo produced their first cubes in 1910 and further increased Oxo's popularity.
The large kitchen range in the background is a 1:12 miniature replica of the coal fed Phoenix Kitchen Range. A mid-Victorian model, it has hinged opening doors, hanging bars above the stove and a little bass hot water tap (used in the days before plumbed hot water).
Yes I counted them, but was a little disappointed that after 50 hours of work that there was only 750 loose books, I swear it felt like I made thousands. That being said I'm very happy with the finished product. Tello is the name of the future shop keeper who will be taking over, Clive was just standing in for these photos.

I am happy to announce that I have 2 winners in my contest to guess the name of the most picturesque lake in the Teton Mountains of Jackson Hole, WY.
The two Flikr photographers are ... Sandyb. . and . . Rachel Firth
Congratulations to the two of you. You both win a free copy of my ebook "Grand Teton National Park - A Photographer's Shooting Guide 1." It is now available in Smashwords "Premium" catalog for immediate review and download for all sorts of ebook readers and also as a .pdf document.
On July 4 while in Jackson Hole, WY, I got up early to shoot the early morning sun on the Moulton Barns and afterwards headed to the chuckwagon in Moose for breakfast. After lounging around and enjoying the bright sunny morning, I headed out to hike to Delta Lake.
I've had this lake on my list to shoot for some time but never got around to it in the past but with 11 days in the Tetons recently I had Delta Lake set aside for its own day.
This lake is not visited often and hence why there is no distinct trail to take to it. You have to look carefully for it along the trail leading up to Surprise Lake and then if you find it you really have to look closely as the faint dirt trail disappears here a there and you have to stay alert.
I will include Delta Lake in my upcoming second ebook on shooting locations in Jackson Hole, WY along with precise hiking directions to take to see the lake. Just a little hint here ... if you're a good/regular hiker you might do this hike in a little over 2 hours. If you're not then you can plan on 3+ hours depending on the shape you're in. The last quarter mile is over tons and tons of boulders of all kinds of sizes and the last 100 yards is steep. I also have GPS waypoints for my treeline exit point onto the boulder field.

It is the day after Lettice’s exclusive buffet supper party for two of her Embassy Club coterie of bright young things who are getting married: Dickie Channon, eldest surviving son of the Marquess of Taunton, and Margot de Virre, only daughter of Lord Charles and Lady Lucie de Virre. The soirée in their honour was a glittering success and will go down as one of the events of the 1921 London Season according to the Tattler’s society pages correspondent who busily scribbled notes about all the great and good of the land who were present and what they were wearing, whilst a photographer from the London magazine captured the guests in all their glittering finery.
The day has been spent setting the Mayfair flat back to rights and Lettice’s maid, Edith, with the help of Mrs. Boothby, Lettice’s charwoman* and one of Mrs. Boothby’s friends, Jackie, have swept and polished, scrubbed and cleaned, whilst Gunter and Company’s** men have restored the furnishings to where they were before the drawing room was turned into a ballroom and the dining room into a buffet.
It's after midnight in the up-to-date modern kitchen and silence envelops the flat. Outside only the occasional drone of a taxi dropping late night revellers home, or the hiss of two fighting cats somewhere on the moonlight rooftops outside breaks the evening quiet. Edith has washed all the glasses, crockery and silverware from dinner and after such a busy day of work she should be tired and sleeping soundly like Lettice is, but instead she is still full of excitement from the previous evening as she sits at the deal kitchen table and thinks about all the beautiful people to whom she served drinks.
Her mistress looked beautiful in a powder blue silk georgette gown designed by her childhood friend Gerald Bruton who has his own dress shop in Grosvenor Street. Margot wore a stunning low waisted gown of silver satin. However, it was another guest at the party, Lady Diana Cooper *** who really caught Edith’s eye. With a neat, short chignon of waves and curls woven around a bandeau of diamonds, she wore a stunning blue gown of layer upon diaphanous layer of handkerchief point Lanvin blue silk taffeta which Edith knows from her mistress’ cast-off fashion magazines to be a ‘robe de style’**** with a full skirt supported by a wire hoop underneath the fabric. Pinned to the waist was a large pink satin rose with a slightly smaller one sewn to the right shoulder.
“Oh,” Edith sighs as she picks up a jam fancy biscuit from the Delftware plate in front of her and takes a bite. “How I should love to be reminded of that gown forever.”
As she munches on the biscuit and takes a sip of tea from her teacup, Edith suddenly has an idea. One of her pleasures in her spare time is to collect articles on the latest styles of clothes and hair from Lettice’s old magazines and paste them into scrapbooks. Her current scrapbook has a blank first page which she has kept for something special. Now she knows what that something special is.
Slipping quietly out into the drawing room of the flat, Edith fossicks carefully through the Chippendale gilded black japanned chinoiserie cabinet next to the fireplace and withdraws her mistress’ box of watercolours which she takes back to the kitchen. Going into her own little bedroom off the kitchen she withdraws a pack of coloured pencils from her chest of drawers and snatches up her scrapbook from its surface where it sits upright behind her sewing box, leaning against the floral papered wall. Returning to the kitchen she sets everything out on the table.
“Come on now girl,” Edith mutters encouragingly to herself as she takes up a grey lead pencil. “Let’s put that memory of yours to the test and see if we can’t get it out on paper.”
The pencil tip scratches across the paper as Edith’s hand moves deftly over the page. She starts to hum ‘After the Ball is Over’*****. Soon the figure of a woman emerges on the page with a short chignon dancing gaily with one arm out and another crossed over her chest. The room remains silent except for the tick of the clock, Edith’s soft humming and the sound of pencil against paper as the dress quickly takes form, with its cascades of layers billowing out over the model’s legs, the gown daringly showing her calves, just as Viscountess Norwich had when she danced with her handsome husband and other friends at the party.
“Not bad,” Edith says as she finishes her sketch. “Not bad at all. Now for some colour.”
She goes to the kitchen cupboard where she keeps the old Victorian jugs that Lettice uses for water when she is doing watercolour sketching and withdraws the smallest jug. Filling it with some water she goes back to her seat. She looks guiltily at her mistress’ watercolours resting atop the scrapbook.
“Well,” Edith reasons. “My schoolteachers all said I had artistic flair.” She sighs. “And if I were as lucky as Miss Lettice, I’d have had a tutor to teach me art, or maybe even have gone to the Slade School of Fine Art. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind me using her paints just this one time.”
She releases a sigh of pleasure as she mixes the vibrant robin’s egg blue shade of the gown and begins to paint her sketched figure. The colour lightens as she reaches the hem, matching the stockings on her model. Adding more colour to the pool of blue she then defines the shoes. Rinsing the brush in the jug she waits until the blue paint is dry before adding the rose madder of the silk rose on the shoulder and sleeve, and blonde hair to match her own shade to her figure. Making notes about Lettice’s party in the margins around the edge of her picture, Edith waits until the watercolour is dry. Taking up her colour pencils she adds detail, highlights of colour and shading to her sketch, totally oblivious of the time as the hands on the kitchen clock pass one o’clock, all the while humming happily away.
“There!” Edith remarks at last, satisfied with her creation. “Perhaps I could give Mr. Bruton a run for his money.” She chuckles to herself at the thought. “Now I shall have Lady Cooper’s gown forever.”
As she starts to pack up the watercolours, pencils, sketchbook and tea things she continues to hum ‘After the Ball is Over’, her body swaying to the tune as she imagines herself dancing at a party in the beautiful gown she had just created from memory on paper.
*A charwoman, chargirl, or char, jokingly charlady, is an old-fashioned occupational term, referring to a paid part-time worker who comes into a house or other building to clean it for a few hours of a day or week, as opposed to a maid, who usually lives as part of the household within the structure of domestic service. In the 1920s, chars usually did all the hard graft work that paid live-in domestics would no longer do as they looked for excuses to leave domestic service for better paying work in offices and factories.
**Gunter and Company were London caterers and ball furnishers with shops in Berkley Square, Sloane Street, Lowndes Street and New Bond Street. They began as Gunter’s Tea Shop at 7 and 8 Berley Square 1757 where it remained until 1956 as the business grew and opened different premises. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Gunter's became a fashionable light eatery in Mayfair, notable for its ices and sorbets. Gunter's was considered to be the wedding cake makers du jour and in 1889, made the bride cake for the marriage of Queen Victoria’s granddaughter, Princess Louise of Wales. Even after the tea shop finally closed, the catering business carried on until the mid 1970s.
***Born Lady Diana Manners, Diana Olivia Winifred Maud Cooper, Viscountess Norwich was an English aristocrat who was a famously glamorous social figure in London and Paris. As a young woman, she moved in a celebrated group of intellectuals known as the Coterie, most of whom were killed in the First World War. She married Duff Cooper in 1919. In her prime, she had the widespread reputation as the most beautiful young woman in England, and appeared in countless profiles, photographs and articles in newspapers and magazines. She was a film actress in the early 1920s and both she and her husband were very good friends with Edward VIII and were guests of his on a 1936 yacht cruise of the Adriatic which famously caused his affair with Wallis Simpson to become public knowledge.
****The ‘robe de style’ was introduced by French couturier Jeanne Lanvin around 1915. It consisted of a basque bodice with a broad neckline and an oval bouffant skirt supported by built in wire hoops. Reminiscent of the Spanish infanta-style dresses of the Seventeenth Century and the panniered robe à la française of the Eighteenth Century they were made of fabric in a solid colour, particularly a deep shade of robin’s egg blue which became known as Lanvin blue, and were ornamented with concentrated bursts of embroidery, ribbons or ornamental silk flowers.
*****’After the Ball is Over’ was a popular 1891 song written by Charles K. Harris.
Believe it or not Edith’s sketch and her scrapbook as well as all the items around them are perhaps not quite as they appear, for all of them are 1:12 size dollhouse miniatures from my miniatures collection.
Fun things to look for in this tableau include:
Edith’s scrapbook is a 1:12 size miniature made by the British miniature artisan Ken Blythe. Most of the books I own that he has made may be opened to reveal authentic printed interiors. In some cases, you can even read the words, depending upon the size of the print! I have quite a large representation of Ken Blythe’s work in my collection, but so little of his real artistry is seen because the books that he specialised in making are usually closed, sitting on shelves or closed on desks and table surfaces. Therefore, it is a pleasure to give you a glimpse inside this wonderful scrapbook from the 1920s which contains sketches, photographs and article clippings. Even the paper has been given the appearance of wrinkling as happens when glue is applied to cheap pulp paper. To give you an idea of the work that has gone into this scrapbook, it contains twelve double sided pages of scrapbook articles, pictures, sketches and photographs and measures forty millimetres in height and thirty millimetres in width and is only three millimetres thick. What might amaze you even more is that all Ken Blythe’s opening books are authentically replicated 1:12 scale miniatures of real volumes. To create something so authentic to the original in such detail and so clearly, really does make this a miniature artisan piece. Ken Blythe’s work is highly sought after by miniaturists around the world today and command high prices at auction for such tiny pieces, particularly now that he is no longer alive. I was fortunate enough to acquire pieces from Ken Blythe prior to his death about four years ago. His legacy will live on with me and in my photography which I hope will please his daughter. I hope that you enjoy this peek at just one of hundreds of his books that I own, and that it makes you smile with its sheer whimsy!
The watercolour paint set, brushes, and Limoges style jugs (two of a set of three) come from Melody Jane Dolls’ House. So too do the pencils, which are one millimetre wide and two centimetres long.
The Huntley and Palmer’s Family Circle Biscuits tin containing a replica selection of biscuits is also a 1:12 artisan piece. Huntley and Palmers is a British firm of biscuit makers originally based in Reading, Berkshire. The company created one of the world’s first global brands and ran what was once the world’s largest biscuit factory. Over the years, the company was also known as J. Huntley and Son and Huntley and Palmer. Huntley and Palmer were renown for their ‘superior reading biscuits’ which they promoted in different varieties for different occasions, including at breakfast time. The design on the tin originates from the 1920s, but continued much later due to its popularity. The biscuits on the plate are 1:12 scale artisan pieces. The jam fancy is made by Beautifully Handmade Miniatures in Kettering, whilst the chocolate chip biscuit has been made in England by hand from clay by former chef turned miniature artisan, Frances Knight. Her work is incredibly detailed and realistic, and she says that she draws her inspiration from her years as a chef and her imagination.
The tea cosy, which fits snugly over a white porcelain teapot, has been hand knitted in fine lemon, blue and violet wool. It comes easily off and off and can be as easily put back on as a real tea cosy on a real teapot. It comes from a specialist miniatures stockist in England.
The Deftware cup, saucer and milk jug are part of a 1:12 size miniature porcelain dinner set which I acquired from a private collection of 1:12 miniatures in Holland.

John Muir: "When I reached the [Yosemite] valley, all the rocks seemed talkative, and more lovable than ever. They are dear friends, and have warm blood gushing through their granite flesh; and I love them with a love intensified by long and close companionship. … I … bathed in the bright river, sauntered over the meadows, conversed with the domes, and played with the pines."
"Between every two pine trees there is a door leading to a new way of life."--John Muir
"I would advise sitting from morning till night under some willow bush on the river bank where there is a wide view. Had a great time waking up at 5 AM every day to shoot tunnel view and then driving around down in the valley to Half Dome, Bridalviel Falls, Cook's Meadow and the glorious Cook's Meadow elm tree, Sentinel Bridge, Valley View, Swinging Bridge, and more! Yosemite winters are made for black and whites, and Ansel Adam's ghost haunts the brilliant landscape scenery!
The most epic "Ansel Adams" view is tunnel view where one can see El Capitan, Bridalviel Falls, and Half Dome over magnificent trees, snow, rising fogs, and breaking mists. Enjoy!

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Nikon coolpix 8700

4 works are materials and silhouettes. Similar to fashion.
5 Who is your favorite artist? What is it? Make it clear.
6 Creating a collage is exactly the same as taking photos. As I wrote in the interview, it is the same as writing a novel.
7 I want to show it to someone, but I do not make a piece to show it. Aim for the work you want to decorate your own room as in the photo.
8 What is copycat? Nowadays, it is suspected to be beaten. There is something called Mimesis?

I explained the composition in detail in the text at the time of shooting.
I have taken a lot of pictures until today.
Among them, this photo is the result of sharpening my sensitivity.
I will explain this composition in a video.

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a nice evening last night on New Year's Eve and day today no matter what you decided to do! I wanted to take a moment to share all of the favorite books I read last year and, as always, I'd love to hear about your favorites too!
As I always preface these end of year book lists, many of these books came out in previous years and I didn’t read them when they came out. These just happen to be the best books I read this year. I consider myself an avid reader and one year I actually read a book every day. I haven’t been able to top that since 2019 but I read somewhere between 160-200 books each year. It’s actually hard for me to keep track of the combined total between books I read on my Kindle while traveling and working out on my elliptical and books I read in the bathtub that are the old fashioned type involving paper (remember those?). I successfully did not drop any books in the bathtub this year, which is a real feat seeing as how I am fond of creating bubble monsters that float around from the tub to the ceiling and eat words. You have to watch out for the bubble monsters!
All this being said, here are some of my favorites from this year:
1. Fruiting Bodies by Kathryn Harlan
Harlan could just be my favorite living short story author. Her ideas are not just creative but incredible. This is finely crafted weirdo stuff but exactly what I am looking for in a short story with just the right amount of length and balance between character development and plot. My favorite of the stories, “Fiddler, Fool Pair” was one I resisted at first because I am not as into a certain type of fiction that gets into magical creatures and such but it ended up being not only my favorite but one that I literally weeped at. I’m still getting a little teary now. These are not sad stories, however, but point to the ability of the human spirit to be creative. A couple more things I’ll tell you about this book so that you read it:
-I read it twice this year because I loved it so much.
-My mom read it and loved it so much that she bought a copy for her local library so others could also read it (They didn’t have a copy already).
-This was a Pen/Faulkner 2023 Longlisted book and I’m pretty sure it’s better than anything Faulkner ever wrote.
-If aliens were to come and ask me for one reason why they shouldn’t destroy Earth, I’d shrug and hand them Fruiting Bodies.
2. The Morning Star by Karl Ove Knausgaard
About a decade ago, I read Knausgaard’s My Struggle series and I hadn’t read anything by him since then. Sometimes, I actually veer away from male authors just because throughout history they have been over-represented. That’s not to say there aren’t some fantastic works out there, though and this is one of them. Knausgaard is a very purposeful sort of author and will take his time. This novel is over 600 pages and Wolves of Eternity, which I also read this year and enjoyed, is a whopping 800 pages!
I should also be clear that if I had read Wolves of Eternity first, I may as well have liked it better than The Morning Star. I think my issue with the two novels and reading them so close together was that there was a lot of philosophical overlap about death concepts especially. I enjoyed the characters in both books quite a lot, though, as well as the meandering sense of pondering. I wouldn’t necessarily say Knausgaard is too intellectual, either. He’ll definitely appeal to deep thinkers and the more introspective type of reader but, at the same time, you don’t have to have a philosophy degree to really comprehend the thought processes the characters go through. So, if you’re looking to start this year with a really long novel you can just delve right into, choose one of these. I should also say a main difference between The Morning Star and The Wolves of Eternity is that the Wolves of Eternity gives you some idea of what Russia might look like through a Norwegian perspective *and* gets a little more into human responsibility for choices in this modern world.
Again, I would highly recommend both books. Make time for reading and your life will change.
sprintsmusic.bandcamp.com/album/letter-to-self
3. The Wolf Hunt by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen
I would recommend all three novels I’ve read by this author (Waking Lions and the Liar are her other two) that I’ve read. She is an incredible weaver of stories and cognizant of the complex layers of humans and the inter-weaving of human lives and conflicts..the multiple weights we carry and work through. The Wolf Hunt is no exception and explores everything from racism to homophobia with a few plot twists I never saw coming. This is incredibly riveting book also gives insights into violence and the torn feelings American Jews may have when comparing their lives and choices to their relatives in Israel. Finally, this book is important to read in the sense that it explores how violence begets violence and how quickly paranoia gets out of control. In light of the horror of what is happening between Israel and Palestine in the past and present, I did look up Goshen’s views. I could only find something from a few years ago but she has protested against Israeli violence in Gaza and worked at one time for the Israeli Human Rights Association. She’s also a trained psychologist so perhaps that is also helpful in creating realistic and meaningful characters. Here’s a couple of links featuring a review and an interview.
www.theguardian.com/books/2023/aug/22/the-wolf-hunt-by-ay...
www.thejc.com/life-and-culture/books/interview-ayelet-gun...
4. Greek Lessons by Han Kang
In the past few years, I have noticed more experimental fiction coming out of South Korea and have been very impressed with what I have read. Greek Lessons was one of my favorites this year and I had started the book with a great deal of trepidation as I really hadn’t enjoyed The Vegetarian nearly as much. Greek Lessons is very much so about language and features a very striking sense of experiential inner monologue and sense of philosophizing. It is a real poetic wonder and, though I suppose it would meet some tenants of experimental fiction, it is also possibly to just read it in a certain way where the words intermix with you thoughts and provide a meaningful dialogue and interesting viewpoints.
www.theguardian.com/books/2023/apr/11/greek-lessons-by-ha...
5. The Aosawa Murders by Riku Onda
I tend to crave Japanese novels more than any other type and I read A LOT of novels coming out of Japan. Some of them are cute like the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (Yes, I read the newest fourth book Before We Say Goodbye of the series and liked it) and some of them are much much darker like The Thief by Fuminori Nakamura which I also read this year. Of course, I have read everything by the famous authors Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto but I increasingly have gone back and re-read Mishima’s novels as well as Kenzaburō Ōe. All this is just to say that I have some admitted preferences for Japanese fiction in particular and so I may even be considered a little biased.
Some people get massages when they need to slip into a different head space. I usually just read Japanese fiction. That typically does the trick from the first page forward. In fact, I have gone through phases where I can literally only rad Japanese literature and reading anything else makes my stomach feel sick. The words just don’t work right on the page and travel differently into my mind. It’s an odd fit and I detest it. In contrast, from the first page on, every time I open up a Japanese novel, I hear the lyrics “I put a spell on you and now you’re mine!” in my head quite prominently.
The Aosawa Murders is no exception and it put me in quite a trance so that I devoured it like a chocolate cake with mousse filling. I could not stop reading this book I was so transfixed. What’s crazy is I can’t even really put into words or describe my addiction fully and what it is about the writing that had me hooked but the story line was incredible and the way that Onda ventures forth into the event of a mass poisoning by her examination of the characters present was really spectacular. I don’t tend to read a ton of thrillers or mystery novels but Onda’s novel here has some similar characteristics to other books in this genre and surely elevates it in a big way.
www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/riku-onda/the-aosawa-m...
6. The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride
I read both this book and Deacon King Kong in the same timespan (possibly even in the same week) and I liked them both but this one left an even greater impression, perhaps because of the way McBride gets into the treatment of a boy with a disability in the book. McBride has a way of writing characters with humor even when they are dealing with multiple conflicts and I enjoy that quite a bit. This book also shows a community and ties between African Americans and Jews in small town Pennsylvania in the 1930s, which I think many people might not know about. McBride is a fantastic author and I’ve read many of his novels and enjoyed them! You can tell there’s a side of him that is empathetic and kind to his characters and real people.
www.washingtonpost.com/books/2023/09/23/heaven-earth-groc...
7. Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura
I get the feeling that this book is rather popular in Japan and I just saw that it was made into an animated film. I really liked it for it’s vivid imagination and sense of problem solving for a group of isolated teenagers who don’t fit into their high schools at all and so have stopped going because of deep school anxieties. They manage to escape into this castle space and find each other and become friends and there’s an interesting sense of their personalities and how Tsujimura explores what has brought them to this point in their lives. I thought this book was really important for all educators to read to try to understand school anxieties as well as remember what it was like to be a teenager and have these strong feelings. I related quite a bit myself to not feeling like I fit in and wanting to just avoid school altogether. I didn’t end up staying home for any length of time but middle school and high school filled me with a deep dread socially. I didn’t want to enter my school building on most days because I just felt like a true misfit. I battled my first depressions in these years and struggled so much with understanding what I would even have to do to make friends or be popular. Of course, my parents had also moved out to a rural place from the city of Rochester after I finished 6th grade and so I found myself surrounded by farmer kids vs. city kids and I had literally nothing in common with them (On Friday and Saturday nights, they would tip cows for fun and I was a staunch vegetarian even at this age). These kids had all known each other for so many years and I was the new one and relentlessly picked on. The way children can be cruel to each other is something that is troubling to me and I still observe it today. In any case, if you felt like this too a little or if you work with children or have children, you might want to read this one!

8. A Living Remedy by Nicole Chung
I’ve read a few memoirs this year but this one was especially impressive to me. Chung was adopted by white parents in Oregon but, unlike many children who have been adopted, her parents were poor and became even more impoverished when they experienced health issues and a failing US healthcare system or, I should probably call it a no care system because that’s basically what it is. Chung explores her life and the processes of handling illness and grief with a disarming honesty and adeptness. She is a fantastic author and her previous memoir, All You Can Ever Know is also recommended. These are heavy topics but I highly believe books like these are so necessary, especially if you happen to be going through these things yourself.

9. The Aquarium by Yaara Shehori
I think it’s perhaps because I am an only child that I tend to love reading about books that explore the relationships between siblings, especially sisters. It’s fascinating to me, especially when it is done this well. This book is another really poetic marvel and it features a family who is deaf living in an isolated space in poverty and I loved how their thoughts were explored as well as their communications. It also gets into hearing aids and the psychological impact as well as the sensory experience of using them. I was really quite impressed by the way Shehori explored the lives of these sisters!
www.nyjournalofbooks.com/book-review/aquarium-novel
10. Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung
I tend to love speculative fiction and this collection of short stories is super imaginative and fun. I loved the unpredictability of each of them and the collection as a whole and felt like Chung’s voice was very creative and stood out strongly from many other short stories I’ve read. This is just another example of how South Korean authors, especially female authors, are creating great and sometimes preposterous stories and, thankfully, are also being translated into English. Many of these stories had me reeling and laughing in the same span of pages.

A note about the above photo: This was taken in late summer when it was over 90 degrees Farenheit, which is too hot for me to be biking in tights and looking good as you can tell. My face looks extraordinarily large with this camera angle but that's how it goes and I am squinting into the sun so to me it looks very strange. Then again, bodies are always a little weird and very silly. My partner, Cinchel, took this photo of me covered in mushrooms lying down near a forest preserve 10 miles NW of where we live. He recently asked me what I would want for an anniversary present (It will be 25 years coming up!) and I replied, "Don't divorce me or die."

Interviews and novels.
About my book.
I published a book in old days.
At that time, I was uploading my interview on the net on the net.
That Japanese and English.
I will make it public for free.
Details were explained to the Amazon site.
How to write a novel.
How to take pictures.
Distance to the work.
They all have a common item.
I made a sentence about what I felt, and left it.
I hope that my text can be read by many people.
Thank you.

Hidden away amongst the rugged West Texas Mountains is the tranquil Coal Mine Ranch. The ranch is privately owned so one must be invited, tho' what's more, is one must know how to navigate the unmarked dirt roads to arrive there. An off-road vehicle is a must, too. Once at the Coal Mine Ranch, satellite radio is the only connection to the civilized world; otherwise, expect one of the most relaxing times you could ever have in the wild.
The Coal Mine Ranch is featured in my second book, "El Paso 120 : Edge of the Southwest" which shows the incredible landscapes of West Texas, Southern New Mexico and ... well, El Paso. All areas included in the book are 120 miles or less from the City of El Paso, Texas. Upon release, "El Paso 120" went on to become a best seller and was recognized by the Texas Book Festival as one of the best Texas photography books of the year. The book is available to purchase from any major book sellers such as Barnes and Noble , Amazon or Waterstones
Signed copies are also available. Simply send me a message to arrange.
I help aspiring and established photographers get noticed so they can earn an income from photography or increase sales. My blog, Photographer’s Business Notebook is a wealth of information as is my Mark Paulda’s YouTube Channel. I also offer a variety of books, mentor services and online classes at Mark Paulda Photography Mentor

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.
From now on # I will host "Lot No.402_".
The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.
That is the number when it was put up for auction.
No sign was written on the work.
So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.
However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.
A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.
I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

I published a book a long time ago.
At that time # I uploaded my interview as a PDF on the internet.
Its Japanese and English.

How to write a novel.
How to take a picture.
A sense of distance to the work.
All of these have something in common.
I wrote down what I felt and left it.
I hope my text will be read by many people.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

About when I started Fotolog. Architect 's point of view.

Why did not you have a camera so far?
5
What is the coolest thing? The photo is as it is.
6
About the current YouTube bar. I also want to tell # I want to leave.
7
About Japanese photographers. Japanese YouTube bar is Pistols.
8
The composition of the photograph is sensibility. Meet the designers in Milan. Two questions.
9
What is a good composition? What is a bad composition?
10
What is the time to point the camera? It is slow if you are looking into the viewfinder or display.
11
Family photos. I can not take pictures with others. The inside of the subject.
12
About YouTube 's photographer. Camera technology etc. Sensibility is polished by reading books.
13
About the Japanese newspaper. A picture of a good newspaper is Reuters. If you continue to look at useless photographs # it will be useless.

About Japanese photographers. About the exhibition.
Summary. I wrote a novel etc. What I want to tell the most.

1 Photo exhibition up to that point. Did you want to go?
2 Well # what is an exhibition that you want to visit even if you go there?
3 Challenge to exhibit one work every month before opening a solo exhibition at the Harajuku Design Festa.
4 works are materials and silhouettes. Similar to fashion.
5 Who is your favorite artist? What is it? Make it clear.
6 Creating a collage is exactly the same as taking photos. As I wrote in the interview # it is the same as writing a novel.
7 I want to show it to someone # but I do not make a piece to show it. Aim for the work you want to decorate your own room as in the photo.
8 What is copycat? Nowadays # it is suspected to be beaten. There is something called Mimesis?

I went to Milan in 2005.
At that time # I went from Milan to Venice.
We took Eurostar into the transportation.
This photo was not taken from a very fast Eurostar.
When I changed the track # I took a picture at the moment I slowed down.

I knew the legendary brand name American-LaFrance only from books and pictures. This was the first time I saw one in real. It turned out to be a huge vehicle with the dimensions of a truck but still it is registered as a passenger cabriolet.
LaFrance-Foamite was the Canadian devision of the company, until 1971.
American LaFrance (ALF) is known as a specialist in fire-engines, ambulances and rescue vehicles. It's one of the oldest manufacturers of this kind of specialized vehicles in the USA.
In Jan. 2014 the company had stopped all commercial activities.

The Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes have supplied drinking water to the capital since 1853. Before that the people of Amsterdam used to get their water from the canals (the same into which they threw their rubbish). Rhine water is purified by coagulation with the addition of ferric chloride and by rapid filtration in sand and gravel containers. The purified water flows into the dunes and slowly settles into the soil where biological processes ensure for further purification for 60 to 400 days. The dune water receives secondary treatment by aeration, rapid filtration, hardness reduction, ozonation, carbon filtration and slow sand filtration.
Having seen that the multi axle Commutabus mockup was not what the bus industry required, Leyland went back to the drawing board. In 1968, Leyland commenced work on a new £1.6 million development project known as Project FPB7 (forward project bus 7) to design a rear-engined single-deck Integral citybus with right or left-hand drive to be offered in three overall lengths of 10, 11 and 12-metres for the home market and overseas markets. The new bus would be built using the same methods used in the car industry which would require a new advanced factory to be built. A highly skilled team was selected for the project including experience from Leyland's car division of Rover and Triumph this was before the shot gun marriage which seen Leyland Motor Corporation merge with British Motor Holdings in May 1968 to form British Leyland Motor Corporation.
Two important people were involved in the Project FPB7, first Joe McGowan who was the Engineering Director and leader of the project. The second important person was Dr Albert Fogg who joined Leyland Motor Corporation in 1965 and was the Corporate Director responsible for Engineering. At the 1988 Earl's Court Motor Show Leyland announced the 8.2-litre fixed head turbocharged six cylinder 500 series diesel engine available as a vertical or horizontal engine, it was this engine in horizontal form known as the 510 which was chosen to be used in FPB7 because of its compact dimensions.
By late 1968, possibly early 1969, Leyland had built a 2-door 11-metre wooden FPB7 mockup which apart from minor details is how the Leyland National would look. It was July 1969 when the National Bus Company would go into partnership with the British Leyland Truck & Bus Division to form the Leyland National Company Ltd responsible for the design and manufacturing of the Leyland National bus. At this stage the project became B7 with seven prototype buses built in secrecy at Leyland during 1969/70 numbered B701-B707.
In September 1969, it was announced that Marcus Smith was appointed as Director and General Manager of the Leyland National Company Ltd. At the same time it was announced that the Leyland National would be built at new state of the art bus assembly factory to be built on a greenfield site at Lillyhall near Workington on the Cumberland coast.
This official Leyland publicity photograph shows the project FPB7 mockup which had advanced almost to the final form in terms of the side view. The front windscreen with nearly square corners and lower panel treatment was different, and arguably more modern than the final design chosen. The Rover stylist David Bache was responsible for the exterior styling complete with recessed roof cove panels for exterior advertising. I can only guess that many modifications were made to the mockup. Finally the Italian stylist Michelotti was involved in the final styling of the Leyland National which was also applied to the mockup.

This is my final post of 2020, I would like to thank all the people who have viewed my posts, added them as their favourite and left comments. I will continue in 2021 posting interesting and unseen Leyland publicity photographs telling the story of bus and coach models from Leyland's back catalogue going back over 50 years. The Leyland National is a story close to my heart because I live in Workington and have friends who worked at the Leyland National factory.

1:6 scale science classroom
I have a bunch of other stuff to use for a science classroom diorama, but this was a fairly quick set up to show Skipper and her friends in their new outfits. I did just make the walls today from a Playmobile toy box my son got for Christmas. This teacher needs an Interactive White Board in addition to her chalkboard. She has been requesting one for about 5 years, but is still waiting! (Haha...I finally got one last year).
Teacher's desk: vintage, looks very similar to the vintage Mattel Modern wooden stuff. Sold as a Horseman desk, but I've never seen anything like it.
Chalkboard: made from card stock, white gel pen
Desks: Mattel, 1990s. I have about 6 more somewhere.
Walls and floor: scrapbook paper
Body model: my son's, from Amazon
Cage: my son's Matchbox toy, eraser rat
Blue books, blue notebooks, IPads, flag on chalkboard, from new Barbie school accessory set (Walmart). I bought 3.
Cabinet and white table: Mattel repainted
Starfish - real
Microscope: Barbie curvy scientist
Laptop and goggles: Barbie 2018 Lab set
Red pencil box, coffee, binders in cabinet, lotion magnifying lens: Rement
Composition books: Barbie and 1:12 dollhouse
Books and plants in cabinet: made by me
Lab coat: Barbie scientist
Plants, terrarium, pencils, books in cabinet: made by me

I read 2 or 3 books a week so I think it's about time I started using some of them as inspiration for my photos. I'm currently reading The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster for my online reading group. So far it seems to have a lot of interesting points about language in it but it's not gripping me. Therefore I decided to use it to make a cityscape out of books.
Also submitting to MSH for: A Picture Worth a Thousand Words, though there's a bit more than 1000 words in all those books.

So here we go again! Another fun entry of 'Andrew reads old-as-dirt comic books', an ongoing series! :P
The story starts off with this scrub of a college-football-playing science nerd trying to take Joan (no last name because she was a fictional woman in the 40's) on a date. She then turns him down by saying that he sucks and she's already taken.
So Jay is all like, “Yeah good point, I'm gonna work extra hard today instead” so he goes to the field and still sucks, then he later goes to his science class and falls asleep on the job waking up at three thirty in the morning because he was waiting on separating the elements of hard water... yeah idk man.
Anyway, like a doofus, he lights up a cigarette in the lab to take a break, leans his back onto his desk, and ends up knocking all of those elements onto the floor, leading the fumes to cause him to pass out.
So he's found later by his professor, who rushes him to a hospital where he stay's unconscious for a few weeks. Then there's a few panels of unsupported scientific exposition of two scientists talking out their asses about how Hard Water is a real thing and it gives people super speed if Jay EVEN SURVIVES (dun dun dun)
But meanwhile in the other room Jay is up and about and he just happens to see Joan No-Last-Name walking outside the window and Jay's all like “Holy hard water it's that chick who said no to me!” and then without realizing it, he zips outside in... you guessed it... a flash (whomp whomp)
Outside Joan is all like “Woah where did you come from, also I'm going to the library” to which Jay is all like “nbd dude, I got you” and he zips over to the library and harasses a lady to stamp the book Joan wants.
Jay's then back in a jiff and Joan is all like “what the heck man” to which Jay responds with, and I kid you not “It scares me. I'm just a freak of science. Anyhow, will you go on that dance with me now?”
Despite all the red-flags, Joan says yes because this was the 40s... oof.
Later at the football field Jay is all like “put me in coach” and the coach is all like “fine I guess, btw you suck Jay” and then like Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 1, uses his powers like an idiot in front of hundreds of people in the stadium.
Apparently there's no repercussions over it and no one else remembers this at all because the next few panels are of Jay graduating college and reading the newspaper about some crooks doing some crime stuff.
Later Joan shows up at Jay's place and watches him play tennis with himself and is all like “hey man, my Dad's been kidnapped, could you like help maybe?” Then as they're chatting, a drive-by shooter fires off a shot at Joan, to which Jay saves the day by catching the bullet mid-air!
Cut to the shooter walking into his hideout being like “Yeah guys she'd dead I shot her, no way anybody else could have caught a bullet and saved her, anyway how's her Dad doing in the mirror torture room we tossed him in?”
Cut to Dad-Joan who's like “gah my eyes too many mirrors! Btw I'm still not telling you my secrets to my Atomic Bombarder! Gah! Mirrors! Gasp!”
The crook is all like “hmm maybe if I go get Joan's body we can get some info” so like an idiot he returns to the crime scene, bumps into Jay, asks were the dead girl is, and Jay is all like “Huh... he knows something about something...” Then Joan comes out is all “Hello shady stranger, I'm Joan and I'm very alive!” Then the dude is all like “Uh yeah peace out” and bails.
So Jay trails him back to the bad guy lair penthouse place and is like “He crooks, stop your crime! Also it's me The Flash and I have a cool costume now!” and then he catches some more bullets, finds Mr Atomic JoanDad and hightails it out of there to drop him off at home before going back to the bad guy mansion again later.
(are you all ready for this to be over because I sure am)
Anyway he hides behind a curtain and overhears their entire plan to take a fighter plane out and shoot everybody on Coney Island while also kidnapping Joan and DadJoan again (this time v quietly)
Naturally Jay is like, not on your life! (but instead of stopping it right then and there) he waits till the attack the next day and shows off a spectacle of powers, catching all the bullets from the plane's machine gun, then zipping across town to stop the kidnapping. Then after killing his partners, one of the bad guy's gets away in a new extra fast getaway car that's SO fast that he can't control how fast it is when taking a tight cliff-side turn because Jay spooked him because he was just that fast.
Get it guys? He's the flash! He goes quick! He's speedy! So swift! Wow!
Anyway, the goon goes over the edge in his car, and Jay doesn't even attempt to save him, but instead beats the car to the bottom of the ravine to gloat about how he stopped the goons as the car comes to a smoldering halt. Classic hero work.
Then the last three panels (because there wasn't enough story already) Mr Joan is all like “man that Flash guy... wonder who he is under that helmet... he wasn't even wearing a mask or anything! I'm just stumped Jay! Who could he be?!”
To which Joan is all “idk Dad, oh by the way Garrick, you killed a man and your secret is safe with me! *wink*!”
Geez, Gardner Fox was a wordy guy...

MKSG The X-Men: Survival - Issue #5
Boston, Massachusetts - 3 Days Ago
“Sean! Grab your sh*t, we’re leaving! 1 minute!” Tom shouts as he storms through the door of the Cassidy house, leaving his car half-parked and still running on the driveway.
Sitting up quickly from the couch, “What do you mean?!” Sean Cassidy questions woefully.
“I mean that they’ve found us, and that means we have to leave, now!” Tom snaps at his younger brother as he rushes upstairs.
Understanding exactly what this means, Sean reacts quickly. His homework will have to wait. He’s going on the run. It was only a matter of time until someone found out that he and his brother were mutants, and the time seemed to have come. He raced upstairs, slid into his room and yanked the backpack from under his bed that he’d had packed for the last 12 months. He runs back downstairs and out the door.
“Where are we headed?” the 14 year old asks his older brother, quizzically.
X-Mansion Lawn - Today
“Help me!!” yells Sean, desperate and afraid. Once they’d got his brother Tom, he started towards the only place he could think of: Xavier’s School for Gifted Mutants. His mother’s friend, who he always called Aunt Moira, had told him if he was ever in any trouble, to come here, and the people here would help him.
“Help! Please!!” he yelps. Hot on his heel - a military-style truck following him up the lawn, filled with ‘Purifiers’. Mutant-hunters for hire. Ruthless and terrifying, with their thoughts poisoned by bigoted TV personalities such as William Stryker, spreading mutant-hatred and fear.
Sean realises there is no way that he can outrun the truck before he gets to the grand mansion itself. Putting on a brave face, he does the only thing he can do: try to stand his ground.
He stops running and tries to turn around and face his oppressors, but his knees are weak and give way. He still has one trick up his sleeve though…
The truck pulls up, about 20 feet away. He’s feeling faint and almost breathless, but he doesn’t hesitate to defend himself.
“EEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeEEE!”
He screams with his sonic abilities! The forceful blast flips the truck sideways several times and the Purifiers inside shout in dismay as they are tosses around violently. The truck lands back on it’s 6 wheels and several of the soldiers pile out, a couple throwing up.
Then, behind him, he hears an unfamiliar sound
BAMF!
He looks behind him in desperation to see 4 colourful figures, all with an X logo on their belt.
‘It’s the X-Men!’
The Purifier soldiers from the truck scramble and flee in all different directions from the X-Men. Storm flies up above the lawn and hovers on the winds she can control. Her eyes turn white and the skies quickly turn from blue to a dark, cloudy grey. With great might, she summons down a powerful lightning bolt. It strikes the overturned truck and then, KABBOOM! It explodes into a million pieces.
One of the doors from the truck hurtles towards him, flaming and fast. Sean covers his head with his hands as he feels the intense warmth from Cyclops’ optic beam over him, hearing the PZZZRKKTT! of it as it slices the door in half, so the pieces land either side of the team.
Sean reveals himself from under his arms to see Iceman covering the flaming wreck with snow and ice. Storm stands over him, and offers Sean a hand up. He goes to accept and pull himself up, but he’s so exhausted. Sean gently collapses onto the green grass of Xavier’s Mansion, home to the X-Men.
Indeed, the image is backwards because of a lesson that was learned from my last faux slide:
If you're looking at the slide mount with the writing facing you, then the image must be reversed.
Aside from that technical stuff, here is a better view of the interior. Good golly Miss Molly, there must be a ton of chrome just on the dash alone!
The model is by The Danbury Mint. Need I say more?
