We're always telling children that books and reading are good for them, but have we ever really thought about why that's true? Exactly what do older children get out of reading novels? What do younger kids get from being read to? Does reading matter?

The purpose of this talke is to say that, yes, it's true, reading really is important, and that there are some solid reasons why that is so. Let's begin with the practical benefits and then move on to the less tangible rewards of a life filled with reading.

1- Books help children devleop vital language skills.

2- Reading can open up new worlds and enrich children's lives.

3-Reading can enhance childrens's social skills

4-Reading can improve hand-eye coordination

5-Reading can provide children with plenty of good, clean fun!

So reading really does matter after all!

Thanks to the Nailbourne project, I now understand how the communities and landscape fots in along its length, though that a bubbling noisy stream can just vanish then appear miles away is very difficult to get your head round. The Nailbourne only fully flows in very wet years, but when it does, the beds that are dry now can be several feet deep.

But downstream of Littlebourne, where the Nailbourne becomes the Little Stour, it is wider, about six feet wide, clogged with reeds and weeds, but also was used to power to large mills. They both stand, one between Littlebourne and Wickhambreaux, and the other in Wickhambreaux itself, though is now just a house But is a large white clapboard building, with a large wheel.

These days, the village looks very prosperous, all grand houses or cottage conversions.

From here, the Little Stour makes its way over the marshes which centuries ago was the Wantsum Channel, so Wickhambreaux was almost a seaside town.

------------------------------------------

The interior of this very pretty church is dominated by nineteenth-century work. The whole of the chancel and baptistry is lined with dark brown encaustic tiles, hiding a straightforward fourteenth-century church. The east window is an early example of American Art Nouveau in England, and dominates the entire building. It was designed by Baron Arild Rosenkrantz in 1896. Above the window are stencilled paintings of angels ascending, which can also be seen in the nave, whilst the roof there has a charming star-spangled sky. At the south-west corner is a vestry - screened off by an eighteenth-century screen which may have formed part of the refitting of the chancel paid for by Mary Young. Her monument in the chancel records that 'infirm from her youth she protracted life to the 68th year of her age'. She left £100 for wainscotting and ornamenting the chancel. The interior viewed from the east gives an unusual appearance as the aisles flank the tower (see also Sandhurst).

WICKHAM BREAUS

LIES adjoining to Littleborne north-eastward, being usally called Wickham Brook. It is likewise called Wickham by Wingham, to distinguish it from the two other parishes of the same name in this county. In Domesday it is written Wicheham, a name derived from its situation near the banks of the river, which runs close to it. There is only one borough in it, viz. the borough of Wickham, which comprehends the whole parish.

Wickham is a low, flat, and unpleasant situation, and lying so near the marshes cannot but be unhealthy, the land throughout it is in general good and sertile, especially near the village, where the fields are very large and level ground. The village, in number about twenty houses, stands at the south-east boundary of the parish, built round a green, over which the road leads to Ickham, having the church and court-lodge on one side, and the parsonage, a handsome brick house, on the other. At the further end of the green, the Lesser Stour crosses the road, and turns a corn-mill belonging to the manor, beyond it is only one house, called the Stone-house, being built of squared stones and slints in chequers, and by the arched windows and door-ways seems of some antiquity. The parish stretches a good distance northward, as far as Groveferry, the house of which is within it, and the greater Stour river, over a level of about 500 acres of marsh land, which extend from the river into a sinus, with a ridge of upland on each side, to within a quarter of a mile of the village. North eastward from which is the Saperton, formerly the property of the Beakes's, who resided here as early as king Henry the VIIIth.'s reign; it was sold by them to the Furneses, whence it came by marriage, with Copthall, in this parish, to the St. John's, viscounts Bolingbroke, who have lately sold it, but one of the family of Beake, many of whom lie buried in this church, now occupies it. A little beyond this is Newnham, once accounted a manor, formerly belonging to the Ropers, lords Teynham, afterwards to the Bartholomews, then to Joseph Brooke, esq. of Rochester, and now to his devisee the Rev. John Kenward Shaw Brooke, of Town-Malling.—Hence among the marshes is the hamlet of Grove, through which the road leads across them to the right over the lesser Stour, to Wingham, Ash, and the eastern parts of Kent, and to the left by Grove-ferry over the Greater Stour, to the northern part of the country and the Isle of Thanet. There is no other wood in the parish excepting Trendley park. There is no fair.

At the time of taking the survey of Domesday, in the year 1080, this place was part of those possessions with which that king had enriched his half-brother Odo, the great bishop of Baieux. Accordingly it is thus entered in that record, under the general title of his lands:

In Donamesford hundred, the bishop himself holds in demesne Wicheham. It was taxed at four sulings. The arable land is eleven carucates. In demesne there are two carucates, and thirty-six villeins, with thirty-two cottagers having nine carucates. There is a church, and one priest who gives forty shillings per annum. There is one park, and two mills of fifty shillings, and two saltpits of thirtytwo pence, and three fisheries of four shillings, and thirtytwo acres of meadow. Pasture for three hundred sheep and for thirty-one beasts. Wood for the pannage of eighty bogs. In the time of king Edward the Confessor it was worth twenty-five pounds, when he received it twenty pounds, now thirty pounds. There belong to this manor in Canterbury three plats of land paying six shillings and eight pence. Alured Biga held it of king Edward. Moreover there belongs to this manor half a suling of free land, which Sired held of Alured Biga, and Goisfrid, son of Badland, now holds it of the bishop of Baieux, and it is and was worth separately sixty shillings.

Four years afterwards the bishop was disgraced, and all his possessions were consiscated to the crown, of which this manor appears afterwards to have been held by the Cliffords. Walter, son of Walter de Clifford, possessed it in the reign of king John, and with Agnes de Cundy, his wife, was a good benefactor to St. Augustine's abbey, and that of St. Radigund. (fn. 1) By the marriage of Margaret, daughter and heir of Walter Clifford, with John de Brewse, it passed into that name, and William de Brewse, or de Braiosa, as they were written in Latin, was possessed of it in the 42d year of king Henry III. His descendant William de Brewse, lord of the honour of Brembre, in Sussex, and of Gower, in Wales, as he stiled himself, whose ancestor came into England with the Conqueror, who gave him the castle of Brember, and whose descendant afterwards, by the marriage with Bertha, daughter and one of the coheirs of Milo, earl of Hereford, became possessed of the castles of Brecknock and Gower likewife, and bore for his arms, Azure, a lion rampant, between twelve cross-croslets, or; though I find by the pedigrees of this family, that his ancestors bore Azure, three bars vaire, argent, and gules. He was several times summoned to parliament in king Edward I.'s reign, as was his son of the same name, both in that and Edward II.'s reign, and died possessed of this manor in the 19th year of the latter. Very soon after which it appears, with the church appendant to it, to have come into the possession of Edmund of Woodstock, earl of Kent, half brother to king Edward II. (fn. 2) After which it descended to his brother John Plantagenet, likewife earl of Kent, it being then held of the king in sergeantry. He died anno 26 Edward III. upon which Joane his sister, commonly called the Fair Maid of Kent, wife of Sir Thomas Holand, became his heir, who in her right not only possessed this manor, but became earl of Kent likewise. She afterwards married Edward the black prince, and died in the 9th year of king Richard II. being succeeded in this manor then held in capite, by Thomas Holand, earl of Kent, her son by her first husband, whose two sons, Thomas and Edward, both earls of Kent, and the former created Duke of Surry, in turn succeeded to it, and the latter dying anno 9 Henry IV. his five sisters became his coheirs, and on a partition made between them, Edmund, earl of March, son of Eleanor, late countess of March, the eldest of them became entitled to this manor in his mother's right, being the last earl of March of this family, for he died s. p. in the 3d year of king Henry VI. being then possessed of it. The year after which, Joane, wife of Sir John Gray, appears by the escheat rolls to have been entitled to it; not long after which it became the property of the family of Tibetot, or Tiptoft, as they were usually called, in whom it continued down to John Tiptost, earl of Worcester, who was attainted and beheaded in 1471, anno 10 Edward IV. king Henry being then restored to the crown. He lest an infant son Edward, who, though he was afterwards restored in blood by king Edward IV. yet I do not find that he was ever reinstated in the possession of this manor, which remained in the crown till the reign of king Henry VIII. who granted it, with the advowson of the church, to Sir Matthew Browne, of Beechworth-castle, who in the 22d year of it, passed it away to Lucy, widow of his uncle Sir Anthony Browne, standard-bearer of England, whose grandson Anthony was, anno I and 2 of Philip and Mary, created viscount Montague, and died possessed of this manor anno 34 Elizabeth, and by his will devised it to his eldest son by his second wife, Sir George Browne, who was of Wickham Breaus, and his grandson Sir George Browne, K. B. leaving two daughters his coheirs, Winifrid, married to Basil Brooks, esq. of Salop, and Eleanor, to Henry Farmer, esq. of Oxfordshire, they joined in the sale of it, at the latter end of Charles II.'s reign, to Sir H. Palmer, bart. of Wingham, who died possessed of it in 1706, s. p. and by his will devised it to his nephew Sir Thomas Palmer, bart. who died in 1723, and by his will gave it to his natural son Herbert Palmer, esq. who married Bethia, one of the daughters of Sir Thomas D'Aeth, bart. of Knowlton, who died in 1760, s. p., having devised this manor, with the advowson of the church appendant, to his widow. She afterwards married John Cosnan, esq. who in her right became possessed of it, and died in 1778, s. p. leaving her furviving, upon which she again became entitled to the possession of it, and continued owner of it till her death in 1797, on which it came to her nephew Sir Narborough D'Aeth, bart. of Knowlton, the present owner of it. A court leet and court baron is held for this manor.

Trendley park, now accounted a manor of itself, is situated at the north-west boundary of this parish, being entirely separated from the rest of it by that of Littleborne intervening. It was part of the possessions of Odo, bishop of Baieux, and is noticed in the survey of Domesday, in the description of the manor of Wickham above recited, in which it is mentioned as being then a park; and it should seem that at least part of it was then accounted as appurtenant to that manor; though in the description of the manor of Littleborne, in the same survey, which then belonged to the abbey of St. Augustine, it appears that the bishop had lands belonging to that manor too lying within his park here. Of this manor the bishop of Baieux has in his park as much land as is worth sixty shillings, says the record. In part of the recompence for which, the bishop seems to have given the abbot the manor of Garwinton, in Littleborne, and other land within the manor of Leeds, as may be seen by the entries of both these manors in the same record. Soon after which there was another exchange of land made between the bishop and archbishop Lanfranc, for some which lay within his park of Wikeham. What is remarkable in this instrument is, that it is given in two languages, in Saxon and Latin, but neither is a translation of the other, for both are originals, as was a frequent custom of that time. Appendant to it is the bishop's seal in wax, representing him on one side on horseback, with his sword and spurs, as an earl, and on the other habited as a bishop, with his pastoral staff; being perhaps the only seal of Odo at this time extant. (fn. 3) By all which it appears, that this park is much more antient than that of Woodstock, which has been accounted the first inclosed park in England. How long it continued an inclosed park, I have no where found; but in the beginning of king Henry VI.'s reign it was not so, as appears by the escheat-rolls of the 3d year of it, after the death of Edmund, earl of March, at which time there were two hundred acres of wood in it. He was lord of the manor of Wickham, and Trendley park was chiefly at that time certainly appurtenant to it, and continued so whilst in the possession of the same owners, which it did most probably till the attainder of John Tiptost, earl of Worcester, in the 10th year of king Edward IV. when they both came into the hands of the crown, and though king Henry VIII. afterwards granted the manor of Wickham to Sir Matthew Browne, yet I do not find that Trendley park was granted with it. From which time it has had separate owners. For some time it has been the property of the family of Denne, who continue at this time the owners of it. It lies in an unpleasant, lonely part of the parish, facing Westbere, and consists of three hundred acres of woodland, and a house called the Park-house. There is a high road through the middle of it from Stodmarsh to Canterbury market, which in king Edward II.'s reign, was attempted to be shut up, but the sheriff, with the posse comitatus, was ordered to open it again, as being an antient and allowed high road.

Charities.

Andrew Holness, of Seton, in Ickham, by will in 1554, gave to the poor 2s. in money and bread, to be distributed yearly; the churchwardens to take so much yearly out of his lands in Ickham and Wickham, except his house and garden at Seton, in case his executors did not give the same yearly.

Henry Sloyden, of Wickham Breaus, by will in 1568, gave for the use of the poor and Littleborne, in equal portions, a piece of land containing six acres and a half in the latter parish, called Church-close, which is distributed twice a year by the respective minister and churchwardens, and is of the annual produce of 4l.

John Smith, rector of this parish, by deed in 1656, gave a school-room, and a house and garden for a schoolmaster, in this parish, for teaching the children of it. The master to be chosen from one of his relations in preference, if any such could be found, is vested in the rector and churchwardens of this parish.

Sir Henry Palmer, of Bekesborne, by his will in 1611, gave the sum of 10s. to each of the several parishes of Wickham, Stodmarsh, Littleborne, and five others therein mentioned, to be paid into the hands of the minister and churchwardens yearly, out of his manor and lands of Well-court, at Michaelmas, towards the relief of the poor of each of them.

Thomas Belke, D. D. rector of this parish, by will in 1712, gave 501. for the putting out of five poor children of this parish apprentices.

There are about thirty poor constantly relieved, and casually seventy.

This parish is within the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Bridge.

¶The church, which is dedicated to St. Andrew, consists of three isles and one chancel, having at the west end a square tower, in which hang six bells. The church is not large, but is handsome and neat. In the middle isle are several memorials for the Beakes, of Saperton. In the south isle for the Larkins, who lived at Grove, in this parish. In the east window are remains of good painted glass, viz. the arms of Edward the black price and of Mortimer, quartered with Burgh, and a representation of Herod's daughter beheading John the Baptist. In the chancel, on the pavement, is the figure of a priest in brass, and inscription, for Henry Welde, rector, obt. 1420. A gravestone, and monument for Alexander Young, B D. rector of this parish, who rebuilt this parsonage-house, and repaired that of Eastchurch, of which he was vicar likewife, at the expence of 2000l. obt. March 21, 1755. A memorial for John Smith, rector, obt. Oct. 28, 1658. In the church-yard are many headstones, and a tombstone for the family of Beake. In the windows of this church there were formerly many different shields of arms, long since demolished.

This church was always an appendage to the manor, and continues so at this time, Sir Narborough D' Aeth, bart. owner of the manor of Wickham, being the present patron of it.

There was antiently both a rectory and vicarage in this church, which continued till the year 1322, when on a vacancy of the latter, Richard de Newcastle, the rector, petitioned archbishop Walter Reynolds, that they might be consolidated, which was granted, and they have continued in that state to the present time. (fn. 4)

This rectory is valued in the king's books at 29l. 12s. 6d. and the yearly tenths at 2l. 19s. 3d. In 1588 it was valued at 250l. communicants one hundred and sixty-three. In 1640 the same. There are eighteen acres of glebe-land.

The marsh-lands in this parish, within Wickham and Preston valleys, pay a modus of two-pence an acre, and those within Newnham 1½d. only, in lieu of all tithes.

It follows #theGrinch a grouchy, solitary creature, his only companion is his unloved, but loyal dog, Max. The #Grinch attempts to put an end to Christmas by stealing Christmas-themed items from the homes of the nearby town Whoville on Christmas Eve. Despite his efforts, Whoville's inhabitants still celebrate the holiday, so the Grinch returns everything that he stole and is the guest of honor at the Whos' Christmas dinner.

The #CatintheHat is a children's story that centers on a tall anthropomorphic cat, who wears a red and white-striped hat and a red bow tie. The Cat shows up at the house of Sally and her unnamed brother one rainy day when their mother is away. Ignoring repeated objections from the children's fish, the Cat shows the children a few of his tricks in an attempt to entertain them.

Renishaw Hall

Renishaw Hall is a country house in Renishaw in the parish of Eckington in Derbyshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building and has been the home of the Sitwell family for over 350 years. The hall is located south-east of Sheffield, and north of Renishaw village, which is north-east of Chesterfield.

History

The house was built in 1625 by George Sitwell (1601–67) who, in 1653, was High Sheriff of Derbyshire. The Sitwell fortune was made as colliery owners and ironmasters from the 17th to the 20th centuries.

Substantial alterations and the addition of the west and east ranges were made to the building for Sir Sitwell Sitwell by Joseph Badger of Sheffield between 1793 and 1808 and further alterations were made in 1908 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Renishaw had two owners between 1862 (when Sir George Sitwell succeeded in his infancy) and 1965, when Sir Osbert Sitwell gave the house to his nephew, Sir Reresby Sitwell, 7th Baronet. He was the eldest son of Sir Sacheverell Sitwell brother of Edith and Osbert and owned the hall from 1965 until 2009 when he bequeathed it to his daughter, Alexandra Hayward. The house and estate are separated from the Renishaw baronetcy for the first time in the family's history. Sir George Sitwell lives at Weston Hall.

Architecture

The house was built in stages and has an irregular plan. It is constructed in ashlar and coursed rubble coal measures sandstone with crenellated parapets with pinnacles. It has pitched slate roofs.

Gardens

The gardens, including an Italianate garden laid out by Sir George Sitwell (1860–1943), are open to the public. The hall is open for groups by private arrangement. The park is listed in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England as Grade II*.

The 1980 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice used footage shot at Renishaw Hall. D. H. Lawrence is said to have used the local village of Eckington and Renishaw Hall as inspiration for his novel Lady Chatterley's Lover.

The main entrance is on the north-east side of the site where gates lead to a drive running south-west from the A616. Some 100m south-west of the entrance there is an early C19 lodge and entrance archway (listed grade II) which was designed by Sir Sitwell Sitwell and moved to this position in the mid C19. The drive turns north-west up a hill and continues westwards to the Hall and stables. An entrance with gates on the north side of the site runs south from the B6053. On the south-west side of the site there is an entrance from Staveley Lane from which a track leads north through Chesterfield Approach Plantation. The track continues north-east from the edge of the Plantation and from this point trees alongside it are the remains of an avenue shown on the large-scale OS map of 1875 which was probably part of a system of avenues shown on an C18 estate map.

PRINCIPAL BUILDING

Renishaw Hall (listed grade I) was built in c 1625 by George Sitwell as an H-plan house. The building was altered and extended 1793-1808 by Joseph Badger for Sitwell Sitwell, first baronet. Edwin Lutyens (1866-1944) was responsible for interior alterations in 1909. The Hall is in use as a private residence (1998).

Stables (listed grade II*) by Badger are ranged around a courtyard c 100m north-west of the Hall.

GARDENS AND PLEASURE GROUNDS

On the north side of the Hall there are lawns in an area shown on the C18 estate map as an enclosure. There are views north over parkland and agricultural land beyond. Formal gardens lie on the south side of the Hall axially aligned with its south front. They consist of rectangular compartments divided from one another by clipped hedges which are terraced down to the south in three stages, as well as occupying different levels as the land falls to the east. A terrace running along the front of the Hall overlooks a square lawn lined with topiary on the east and west sides which divides it from two smaller lawns called the First Candle on the west side and the Second Candle to the east. Each of these areas has a fountain, the appearance of which gave rise to the name. A bank divides the First Candle from an area of higher ground called Top Lawn where a lime avenue runs north/south along the length of the gardens. This is one of several avenues shown on the C18 estate map and probably represents one of the only surviving features of a layout instituted in c 1698 by George Sitwell which included walled orchards and yew hedges. To the west of the avenue, c 60m south-west of the Hall, there is a gothick temple (listed grade II) which was designed by Joseph Badger in the early C19 as an aviary and is now used as a pet cemetery (1998).

A second terraced walk lined with clipped hedges runs east/west across the garden, c 50m south of the Hall. At the east end the walk leads through a gateway into woodland called Broxhill Wood which is marked 'Little Old Orchard' on the C18 estate map. A classical temple of late C20 date lies c 120m south-east of the Hall in the woodland. The walk overlooks a central lawn with a circular swimming pool. In a compartment to the east called Lower Lawn there is a water garden which consists of a central sub-rectangular island with clipped hedges within a rectangular water-filled enclosure. On the west side of the swimming pool an enclosure with lawns is called the Buttress Garden for the buttressed wall which divides it from Top Lawn to the west. Clipped hedges divide these areas from a grass walk running along the top of a ha-ha, c 100m south of the Hall, which runs east/west across the bottom of the garden. This overlooks a central semicircular lawn divided from the park by railings. There are views to the south of the lakes and parkland.

The C18 map shows the Hall surrounded by gardens laid out in geometrical patterns with quartering paths, and the area south of these is marked 'Great Old Orchard'. The layout shown probably represents that instituted by George Sitwell in c 1698. The 1875 OS map shows that apart from a small area on the south-east side of the Hall, the formal gardens had been swept away, and a lawn, divided from the park by a ha-ha and flanked by the lime avenue, is shown on the south side of the Hall.

PARK

There is parkland on all sides of the Hall. To the north the land falls and the north-east part of the park is laid out as a golf course which was created in the early C20. Old Waterworks Plantation shelters part of the north-east boundary, and North Wood, which is to the west of the drive from Eckington, separates the golf course from parkland to the west. Some 350m west of the Hall is a set of walled paddocks, shown on the 1875 OS map, which probably originated as a stud farm and are now (1998) vineyards. Chesterfield Approach Plantation lies immediately south of the paddocks and in the area between this and the gardens there are the remains of at least one lime avenue, shown on the 1875 OS map, which survives from the formal layout shown on the C18 estate map and runs parallel to the avenue within the garden.

East and south of the Hall the land falls and in the valley there are two lakes. The northernmost is the smaller of the two, and the southern lake, which has an island near its south-east shore, is c 500m in length. Sir George Sitwell was MP for Scarborough and conceived of the scheme to construct the lakes as relief for the unemployed in his constituency and they were duly created by unemployed fishermen in the closing years of the C19. To the north of the lake is Renishaw Wood and Broxhill Wood, and along the east boundary Willowbed Plantation, designed to screen the railway and ironworks. The planting in this and possibly in other areas of the park was directed by William Milner who was employed by Sir George in 1890. The land rises up to the south and west from the lake with Halfmoon Plantation sheltering the south-east boundary. A patch of woodland on the sloping land c 800m south-west of the house is called Milner Plantation.

KITCHEN GARDEN

Some 200m south-west of the Hall are the remains of a kitchen garden. An orangery entered from the north side from a door with a pedimented doorcase is in ruinous condition (1998), as are the attached walls which have arched entrances. A tennis court lies south of the orangery. The 1875 OS map shows the garden with two compartments, the southern of which occupied the tennis court area. Another kitchen garden, also shown on the 1875 OS map, lies immediately west of the stable block. It is walled and has a number of free-standing glasshouses, some of which are probably of late C19 or early C20 date.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!

John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

"Space Patrol" was a pioneering science fiction TV series that aired from March 1950 to February 1955. It was a unique blend of adventure and science fiction, set in the distant 30th century. The show followed the thrilling escapades of Commander-in-Chief Buzz Corry (Ed Kemmer) of the United Planets Space Patrol and his youthful sidekick, Cadet Happy (Lyn Osborn), as they combated cosmic villains and their nefarious plots.

Originally targeted at a younger audience through television, radio, and comic books, "Space Patrol" quickly garnered a significant adult following. By 1954, it was consistently ranked among the top 10 shows broadcast on Saturdays. The series was not just a form of entertainment; it also engaged its audience through interactive marketing strategies. For instance, it featured commercial tie-ins with toys and mail-order premiums during the commercial breaks, often integrating the premium of the month into the storyline, which allowed young viewers to feel like they were part of the adventure.

One of the most notable promotions was the "Name the Planet" contest, where the winner received a life-sized model of the show's Terra IV spaceship. This prize was a giant trailer shaped like the spacecraft featured in the series.

The show's influence extended beyond the screen and airwaves, with many national magazines documenting the "Space Patrol" phenomenon. While not all episodes have survived, many of the 30-minute TV episodes are still available in various video and DVD formats. [Sources: Wikipedia, Alchetron.com, and archive.org]

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

The 1812 founded Society of Friends of Music of the Austrian Empire (now the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna) has set itself essentially three major tasks:

- The organization of concerts

- Collecting material of all kinds for documenting the music and musical life

- The maintenance of a conservatory.

The latter, often referred to as the Vienna Conservatory, became the leading musical training center of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but it had, because for sponsorship by a private association it had become too big, to be handed over in 1909 to state control; first it became the academy and finally today's University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. The other two self-set tasks fulfills the Society of the Friends of Music today as ever organized privately and independently on the basis of an association. Its home is the "Musikverein" (Vienna I, Bösendorfer street 12), built according to plans by Theophil Hansen and founded in 1870. It is the third own building in the history of the company.

The documentary and scientific objectives are met in archives, libraries and collections of the Society of Friends of Music, though, often abbreviated just to "Archive". This historic division split into three groups is concerning the content structured as follows:

Archives: music and letter autographs, music manuscripts, the actual file archive on the history of the Society and the Conservatory (with student matriculation register).

Library: handwritten and printed books (including medieval music manuscripts and tablatures), song books, magazines and other periodicals, librettos, printed documents of various kinds.

Collections: historic and non-European musical instruments, musical mementos, portrait and picture collections (portraits, topographic, historical, musical and theatrical representations in oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, all printing techniques and photographs), busts, statues, reliefs and medals.

The beginning of the collection activity falls into that period where just developed the musical historicism, for example, sheet music that became obsolete or musical instruments not in use anymore that appeared collectible. The stock has been and is by purchases and gifts, in the 19th century for a long time also by surrender of goods of the statutory copies by the police authority, supplemented.

The responsibility initially was in the hands of volunteer employees and officials of the Society (among them such well-known figures such as Raphael Georg Kiesewetter or Aloys Fuchs were) and since 1865 in those of salaried archive directors and their staff. Among them were well-known scientists such as Gustav Nottebohm, Carl Ferdinand Pohl, Eusebius Mandyczewksi and Karl Geiringer.

The purchases ranged from the library of Ernst Ludwig Gerber, in which again the library of Johann Gottfried Walther was included (1814), and the 1824 purchased musical instrument collection of Franz Glöggl from this one to acquisitions from the estate of Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert and further to the in late 19th century become customary and until the mid-1930s possible acquisitions of special individual pieces by patrons. After an interruption during the Nazi and postwar period it was not until the mid-1970s that it came to a continuous and significant continuation of collecting.

This break was twofold. After the dissolution ("decommissioning") of the Society and its subsequent inclusion in the Berlin "State Theater and Stage Academy" was planned this facility, which still bore the name of "Society of Friends of Music", exclusively to concentrate on the concert circuit. The music instrument collection was placed in the Museum of Art History. Archive and library should be transferred to the National Library (which ultimately not happened). Every active collection activity the by the new rulers taken over employees was prohibited. Finally, they were allowed, as long as archive and library are located at the Musikverein building, as hitherto, to accept any gifts, but with the following restrictions: only of small value and not owned by Jews or Jewish pre-possession. Higher-quality gifts and objects owned by Jews were reserved for other institutions. In May 1945, the Society as an independent association was re-established. Severe war damage to the building, the difficult re-establishement of a concert circuit and all the economic problems of this time a long consolidation phase have required that with several setbacks lasted to the sixties. Thus, for example, was doubted whether they could take back at all the collection of musical instruments located at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, so it came only in 1971 to a partial and in 1988 to a total return. It was only in the seventies, that it came to the slow resumption of a targeted programmatic collection activity for archive, library and collection through purchases or with the effort to get special gifts or estates.

Besides the already mentioned examples of purchases, from the beginning on gifts were essential for the building up of the stocks. Often essential pieces came from individuals, but crucial for the growing reputation of stocks were estates. Highlighted only should be the estates of archduke Rudolph of Austria (1831), Joseph Sonnleithner (1835), Carl Czerny (1857), Joseph Ritter von Spaun (1865), Simon Sechter (1867), Leopold von Sonnleithner (1873), Ludwig Ritter von Kochel (1877), Count Victor Wimpffen (1892), Johannes Brahms (1897), Nicolaus Dumba (1900), Ludwig Bösendorfer (1919), Alfred Grünfeld (1927) and after a long pause that of Gottfried von Einem (as premature legacy 1979), Francis Burt (1981 premature legacy), Karl Pfannhauser (1984), Immogen Fellinger (2001) and Ernst Märzendorfer (2009). Even of the well-known gift donors, leaving stocks from their own property, only a few can be mentioned in selection: The city of Lübeck (1814), Georg August Griesinger (1814), Raphael Georg Kiesewetter (several times), Aloys Fuchs (many times), archduke Leopold Ludwig of Austria (1865), Joseph Dessauer (1870), emperor Franz Joseph I. (1879, 1905), family Haslinger (1887), Dr. Joseph Standthartner (1888), Marie Schumann (1913), Else Billroth (1915), Alma Maria Gropius-Mahler (1917), Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1917, 1937), monsignor Dr. Charles Weczerzik-Planheim (1923, a violin from Franz Geissenhoff, remarkable because this was the only string instrument of standard type or conventional design and till the end of the 20th century remained that was included in the collection of musical instruments), Anton von Webern (1937), Anthony van Hoboken (1977), HC Robbins Landon (2002), Renate and Kurt Hofmann (2002), Gottfried Scholz (2007, 2014).

Although according to the original intentions "music in all its styles" should be collected and documented, hence, without time and spatial restriction, and here actually also sources on English, French, Italian and Eastern European music history exist, in the stock development but main areas have resulted which may be titled as follows: Renaissance and early Baroque, Italian Baroque opera, Vienna classical and pre-classical, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and his circle, Gustav Mahler, Austrian music of the 20th century.

The broadly based collection area the stocks also for the art, literature, cultural and social history makes interesting.

I am so ridiculously behind on this challenge and am trying very hard to catch up. A Strong and Sudden Thaw was actually a re-read for me and it was just as terrific the second time around as it was the first.

From Amazon:

Review

A Strong and Sudden Thaw is a well-told, post-apocalyptic romance with a distinctive narrative voice. Combining a realistic story of small-town struggles, prejudices, and affections against a larger tale of endless winter and hungry dragons, R. W. Day offers readers a heartwarming work of speculative fiction that combines the persecuted love of Brokeback Mountain with the charming romance of Big Eden. --Dru Pagliassotti, The Harrow

This is an excellent novel, however you measure it. It's good science-fiction, it's a good slash/boy's love romance, and a beautiful coming of age story. --Ann Somerville, Uniquely Pleasurable, October 2006

Product Description

The Ice fell upon the world nearly a hundred years ago, and if civilization didn't rightly collapse, it surely staggered and fell ill a while. In the small town of Moline, Virginia, folks struggle to survive, relying on hybrid seed sent by the faraway Department of Reintroduction and Agriculture and their own faith in God and hard work. But when a mated pair of dragons starts hunting the countryside, stealing sheep, and attacking children, the townsfolk quickly learn that they don t have the weapons or the skills to fight off such predators.

David Anderson is a farmer's son who has explored the world through books. When he meets the new healer in town, Callan Landers, he doesn't quite know what to make of the strange warmth stealing over him. It's not until he surprises Callan with another man and both men are promptly arrested for sodomy that David finally realizes the truth about his own feelings.

When David and Callan stumble over a secret in a nearby abandoned town, their personal problems fade before government politics and corruption that threaten lives. It seems the dragons aren t the worst dangers facing Moline.

1. Liked: This is the 4th I've read (part 2 of no.3) and it is much improved on the one before. Gripping, exciting, stuff actually happens.

Disliked: but someone PLEASE be brave enough to edit GRRM a bit more judiciously.

2. Liked: it was easy to read, and not awful. Not great literature but I didn't expect that.

Disliked: you need a strong stomach for all the beatings that are dished out.

3. Liked: er .... Ah I know, it was VERY cheap to get the kindle version.

Disliked: ok, this is a local author and a first novel so I am loathe to be a bitch BUT I hated it, the style, the story (which was done infinitely better in Behind the Scenes at the Museum), the writing style.

4. Liked: I wasn't at all sure what I would make of this but I loved it. It is quirky, violent, slightly supernatural, and generally a bit weird.

Disliked: again, bring a strong stomach.

5. Liked: the evocation of Russia in the 30s and early 40s; the characters, the writing style.

Disliked: the first third is a little dull but hang on, it's a long book and the last 2 thirds are very good.

6, 7 & 8: Liked: omg, I adored these books!! I didn't expect to because I am sniffy about YA fiction, being an adult and all, but I liked the sound of the storyline (I love future dystopia type things) - and I DEVOURED these books, I was totally gripped. She writes well, the world is nicely written, loved it ALL! (especially Peeta who is a badass and a sweetheart and I think I love him). Some of the lines from Johanna actually made me laugh aloud. And I cried at the end of the 3rd one, haha!

Disliked: ok, I would like them to print an over-18 version (NOT an x-rated version), just one where there is a little more going on - the main 3 characters are 16/17 and 18/19 after all, not tweens. All that kissing, arrgh! Yes it's sweet but, for example, a grown male character in a seedy bar in the town is described as teasing someone, saying how all the women love his kisses. I just don't think he would be saying KISSES in that context. Or, she shares a bed lots of times with a boy and hormones don't kick in? Hmm. (There was an adult version of The Dog in the Nighttime book, with a bit more swearing, that's the sort of thing I mean, not the whole book rewritten or anything.)

And there are times I think Katniss is a pain in the butt but hey, it's a minor thing, and totally appropriate to the plot.

Description

"Book Summary"

The world’s problems require new thinking and new solutions. Wars, famine, unequal distribution of resources, the destruction of the environment… these issues call for cooperation, intuition and networking. Women have unique skills and gifts to apply to solving these problems. However, today’s woman is caught up in yesterday’s mental programming. Despite all the gains of the feminist movement, women still continue to judge success based on values of the fifties: finding a man, marriage and creating a family above all else. However, the single-minded pursuit of these goals can actually get in the way of a truly satisfying life and prevent a woman from making her mark in the world. This book argues that all women should take time out to learn who they really are and what they have to offer the world.

Geva Salerno is a businesswoman who embarks on a year-long experiment designed to step outside her pre-conceived ideas about life, in order to reclaim her true self. After finding herself over-worked, divorced and obsessed with achieving society’s vision of the perfect life, Geva gives up dating for a one-year period…no more online dating, no more blind dates and no more thinking about men. Set in southwest Florida in 2011 and 2012, the story is the true account of how a woman re-created her life step by step.

As she begins the process of dismantling her false life and slowly building an authentic, creative and fulfilling one, Geva brings to life long-forgotten dreams and aspirations and begins to take risks. But, as she begins to re-discover her true self, she also discovers her true voice. Her family must learn to adapt to this “new Geva” as she begins to carve out a new place for herself in her family of origin.

She must also find a new, healthier relationship to work, which forces her to examine her real monetary needs and how she spends her time. As her old life unravels, Geva must simultaneously create a new one and be open to what the new life brings. Can she survive in this brand, new world unfolding around her?

Over the course of the year, Geva meets new friends who are on similar, but different paths. Strong new women enter her life, while several interesting men tempt her to give up the quest and she is forced to choose between familiar patterns and a new, unknown future. "Will Geva give up the experiment and return to her old life?" "Can Geva create a new life, where she no longer needs men?""What role will men play in her new life?" "Will her discoveries affect the lives of millions of women around the world?"

"This debut memoir by a talented new writer breaks all the rules and will keep you reading from sunup to sundown. Don't miss this one."
