Rule No.1 in Photography.

If you sell your photo to an author for use as a book cover you must first read the book. I got well paid for my shot, similar to this one.. but I wish I'd read the book of poems first.

Sometime ago I posted some of the illustrations from the above book and I hoped that would be able to find them physically in the museum and photograph them. I took the third set of 15 illustrations from this book and went on the V & A website; Search the Collections. My results were based upon the following criteria:

(1) Items I did locate and photograph.

(2) Items that were in storage

(3) Items I couldn’t find anywhere

So I will be posting them, along with their locations in the museum, against the original plate and photograph from storage (where possible). The original price and any further information I might find.

One thing I didn’t count on, was that renovations would alter the interior of the building so drastically. I have found it very difficult to pin some of these locations down but in the main they have been found.

Not many of the examples shown this time were successful, as can be seen I only found 1 item.

I made these 1/12th books from a kit by Lauren Delaney (LDelaney on Etsy) a few years ago. I asked her at the time if she would ever consider making her kits in 1/6th. She just contacted me to let me know they are now available! These are paper kits, not downloads, and are printed on nice, textured paper. You can add real pages, or use wood or craft foam. I've done all of these techniques. I thought some of you might be interested in this news for your 1/6th projects!

The Power of the Masters to Inspire:

After “Breakfust” at the Peninsula Creamery, Beverley and I stopped in at Bell’s Books a few doors down. Bell’s is one of the oldest remaining family owned independent bookstores in the Bay Area, established in 1935. We have been visiting since the early ‘80s. I enjoy glancing over the photography section. Bell’s relies on media donations from their longtime residents of Palo Alto. And being a College Town (Stanford University), you never know when a suitcase of attic gems will appear. Today I was fortunate to add the elusive 1st edition two volume set of Paul Strand; A Retrospective Monograph, Volume 1: The Years 1915-1946 & Volume 2: The Years 1950-1968. It is the last of the remaining books for my treasured Photography Master’s Collection. A collection I started back two score and three years ago. Some of you may know, Strand was one of the Pioneers of film photography, and is famous for his portrait of Blind Woman (1916). David, an artist in his own right, and who also works for Bell’s struck up a conversation. I was in the mood to photograph. I think if I hadn’t found the Strand Book Set, there wouldn’t be a portrait of David. Amazing how the Power of the Masters can fuel the mind.

Donde vivimos seis años

Como si fuésemos niños

Sigo allí entre edificios blancos

Y viajes de diez horas de autobús

El sonido de las escaleras

La primera vez que nos reímos

Hemos sido tantas cosas

Que no caben en un himno

Aquel día en la ciudad

Nos vamos separando

Con los años

La M.O.D.A. - Semifinales

With our fourth annual Spring Break trip now in the books and by the grace of God safely home, it is time to review and edit the 1825 captures that I took along the way. You know that you have experienced a great time away when you and your bride conclude that you had done all that you had hoped and it is now time to head home, early. Blessed by great times with old friends, near perfect weather (only rode out two tornado warnings in the RV) and great food! Let me state up front that the title isn’t about us/me…

While driving home yesterday Joann and I were reflecting on the trip’s events, leading me to the title provided. For the record, neither Joann or I am seafood fans. A good piece of seafood for me has a 1:1 fish to fried batter ratio. I prefer LJS to Red Lobster…and just about anywhere else to those two. For the first time in my life, this Indiana boy became aware of the bounty our oceans provide and how it cycles. Nearly every morning I would arrive on the beaches of Ft. Pickens alone and in the dark, nearly every afternoon/evening I found myself in my favorite restaurants like Flounders and Peg Leg Pete’s. In both cases I would be surrounded by the masses, feverously consuming that which the sea had provided. In both cases it was vicious.

My now well-established pre-dawn ritual would have me make my way to the point where the waters of Pensacola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico meagre. Last years temperatures provided the ideal conditions that trigger mating season for the areas Bottle-nosed Dolphins. This year, the cycle was that of a gathering of millions, maybe billions of small 2-3-inch-long shiners. As the dolphins feasted from below, pushing the massive schools of baitfish near the surface…the dark clouds of fish alerted the Pelicans, Cormorants, Seagulls, Mergansers and Terns to converge in an air assault that hasn’t been seen Pearl Harbor. Hundreds of seabirds converging, wave after wave on a small area (much like people on the restaurants) each just trying to survive another day. I stood on the beach morning after morning capturing the action, all the while narrating it in my head as if I were Sir David Attenborough capturing a BBC documentary. My respect for the Loons of the area grew as they wanted no part of it, my respect for the gulls diminished as they landed on the heads of the pelicans trying to steal any portion of fish protruding from its beak.

Never have I seen/photographed so many different species feeding as I did on this trip. This shot contains a dozen or so of the hundreds of Brown pelicans who pushed the school of baitfish into the shore for easy picking.

Yep, me too!

1. I love music. My favorite artists/bands are Elvis Presley, The All-American Rejects and Mandy Moore. I also like The Beatles, Queen and Whitney Houston. I like almost all sorts of music, actually. But if I have to pick a favorite, it would be rock'n'roll.

2. Until a few years ago I was allergic to potatoes, beet sugar and everything that grows underground. Once, I wasn't invited to a birthday party, because the mother of the girl thought it would cost to much effort to buy something different for me. But I almost always brought my own food everywhere. My mom and my sister were allergic too, by the way. We're all glad we're not anymore.

3. I've always wanted to write a book. I have written down so many ideas and beginnings, but never finished any of it. I started again recently, I hope this will work! I love to write.

4. I cry at almost every beautiful/sad moment in movies. The Lake House, A Walk To Remember and Click are examples of movies I cried at. I also cry at beautiful music, like the soundtrack from Finding Neverland. Such beautiful piano music.

5. As you might know, I'm dutch. But I think in english almost all the time. I love to read english books.

6. I believe in The One.

7. I love notebooks, diaries, organizers, just all stationery in general. But I'm not a very organized person. I don't like planning, and if I do, I never stick to it. I'm always tempted to buy more notebooks, but I don't know what to use them for.

8. I'm kind of a shy person. Sometimes I hate that about myself. I wish I could change it.

9. I think Johnny Depp is one of the best actors EVER. And he's hot. Tom Hanks is also a great actor.

10. I love shopping, I love clothes, shoes, dvds, books. But I don't buy much. Even if I have the money for something, there's 50% chance I won't buy it anyway. Even if I really want it. I don't know why that is.

11. I absolutely dislike my profile. I've been trying to accept the way I look for so long, but it's just so hard. I hope I'll be able to realize it's really NOT that important how you look, and really believe it too when I say it.

12. I can't whistle. No matter how hard I try, I just can't.

13. I know I should, but I don't do that much for school. I always wait until the last day to do something, to finish a paper, to study for an exam. It's a bad habit, but so far I've always made it. I'm afraid I won't make it this year if I don't start to do more.

That was long. And there's much more, lol! Some other time, maybe ;)

This red disk-shaped phenomenon, is another member of the TLEs (Transient Luminous Events, happening in the middle and upper atmosphere, above thunderstorms) family and is called sprite halo. Under it, there is a group of, relatively small, sprites. Sprite halo is short-lived (some ms) and its color comes from the same physical process as in red sprites (de-excitation of 1st positive group of mol. nitrogen). Halos appear close to sprite tops (alt. ~80-85 km), over active thunderstorms, like sprites. Sprite halos are usually triggered by -CGs, in contrast to sprites which are related to +CGs (99%). There is also a faint stripe of high clouds in front of the halo. The yellow light is a distant ship.

The event happened over the thunderstorms south of Crete (on the east side of the Medicane on 28/10) as seen from S. Attica during the night of Oct. 28, 2021. Faint parent lightning flash at the bottom, behind a cloud layer, can be seen as well. I've used a Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/4'' with 51.2k iso. In September 2015, I was scouting out and photographing numerous sites around Lake Tahoe, California and many sites in the Eastern Sierras for a short 5 days.

One the night of September 17, I took the Bonsai Rock Milky Way shot with the moon just above the distant mountain peaks.

The next day we moved down into the Eastern Sierras where I had been planning to photograph the iconic bristlecone pine tree with the Milky Way. Little did I know on the way down how well the moon would come into play with my night sky photography work there.

I used a long established technique to get the moon rays in this shoot while I light painted the bristlecone pine tree with my special light.

In 2017, I will have two 5 day Milky Way photography workshop in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, one over the 3rd week in March and one over the 3rd week in April.

During each of the two workshops, I will conduct 3 4+ hour Milky Way Photoshop post processing session where I teach all the techniques I used to create this final photo but this time it will be more of what is called a "Deep Dive" PS post processing session and workshop participants will need a laptop with Photoshop CS 2017. Lightroom will work but lacks some functionality used in what I will teach.

My Milky Way night sky photography workshops

In 2017, I will be leading two 4 day photography workshops in Jackson Hole. During both workshops, I will take my group out for 3 nights of my Milky Way night sky workshop.

My 2017 4-5 day photography workshop schedule:

ANP, Canyonlands & Monument Valley - March 24-29

Icons of the Southwest w/Ryan Smith - April 23-28

Jackson Hole, Wyoming spring - June 21-25

Jackson Hole, Wyoming fall - September 19-23

The great part is that in 2017 I will return to Jackson Hole for the incredible wildflowers throughout the valley and the surrounding mountains.

Do you shoot the Milky Way but need a little help in getting the Milky Way to jump out of your photos ? If so, take a look at my ebook A Photographer's Milky Way Processing Guide - A Photoshop HowTo

Time to chill out to Adele's song ... Hello.

Thanks for stopping by.

All made with real leather and hand-marbled papers. Non-opening.

I should do more with my photos. I have printed off a load for the flat that are framed in the hall but apart from paying £70 for a massive canvas that i gave away i've not really done much printing.

I seen a photobook review in a photography magazine that i occasionally buy(Digital Photography) and thought why not give that a try. So i went for the company that got the highest score in the review(Bobs Books). The book ended up being £49, the one on review was £39 but that was before p&p and i spent £5 on a cool gloss on the cover lettering.

The quality is great and i've got no complaints but for £49 you would hope that is standard! The only reason i justified buying the book was because i sold a few photographs and it would be rude not to put a bit of the money back into something that helped me make a bit of money from something i enjoy.

Hello my Flickr friends!!!

Today is an amazing yellow day at Color my World Daily and at *ღღ* Cosas de casa *ღღ* we celebrate books !

Yellow Lady always wanted to learn how to knit but she never had time to do so…But since the beginning of social distancing and her quarantine, Yellow Lady has all the time she wanted to learn! Her friend Mr.Teddy Bear, told her that it was a perfect time to self-reflect and to learn something in our lives (that is what he did yesterday …) ! She decided to start today and since it is a yellow day, why not climb a lemon and bring all the necessary to knit. First: the tiny scissors…. She climbed up, put the scissors in place and got down…Then the basket of wool…. second time climbing…. Second time going down….Then the wool… yes I know she should have put the wool in the basket and take everything at once but she didn’t though ahead so she had to climb the ladder for the third time…Then the needles… fourth climb of the ladder… then fourth time going down… She forgot her precious purse while climbing with the needles, so the fifth climb was to get her purse…

At the top of her lemon for the 5th time, Yellow Lady was exhausted… Then she realized that her book on How to knit was all the way down, at the bottom of the ladder… She was about to have a nervous breakdown… Yes, I know climbing a ladder 5 times isn’t that hard but keep in mind that she spent two weeks in quarantine doing absolutely nothing and now she was social distancing from every known activities… Yellow Lady was a little bit rusty and she did put some extra weight for sure….so ladder climbing was truly painful… How was she supposed to learn how to knit when she did not have her book … and of course, no internet connection on the top of the lemon, so no YouTube tutorials…

That is it ! she had enough. She decided not to go back for her book. She will just stay at the top of her lemon, with all her knitting supplies, watching birds fly by and trying to see some recognizable shapes in the clouds…She had her purse with a bottle of sherry, her tiny glass was at home but since there was no one around she could drink straight from the bottle (social distancing has its positive sides also, you don’t need to be a “lady” all the time)... thinking about all the magnificent scarfs she will knit one day for her friends. Yellow Lady was enjoying her social distancing time, just doing nothing…and that is ok also! Learning about yourself is even better than learning how to knit…

Ok, now I really have to run to my office (dining room), I have a conference call in 1 minute and I don’t know if I will be able to make it !!! I’m almost late and I’m as rusty as Yellow Lady sitting all day, doing nothing ;-) !!!

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts / positive vibes!! It is truly appreciated! Have a great day and see you soon!!

All art is but imitation of nature.-- Seneca (Letters from a Stoic - Letter LXV: On the First Cause)

The universe itself is God and the universal outpouring of its soul. --Chrysippus (Quoted by Cicero in De Natura Deorum)

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

Saturday Self Challenge: Kubus

Saturday Self Challenge: Cube

A cube is a rare shape in everyday life, because it is not a practical shape. Boxes, books, drawers, bricks, etc., etc., are all rectangular objects which have mostly two or sometimes even four equal sides, but not in the shape of a cube. So the solution was in a die, the cube that most people are familiar with.

To make the cube shapes stand out, I thought of contrasting shapes namely two of the same but different in size scales combined with diagonal stripes. Furthermore, I made the composition square, because a square is one side of a cube.

To make the cube shapes stand out, I chose this one and not the one from above.

Close up photograph of kitchen implements.

Indeed, I made more than one photograph in the kitchen this week. Will this be a new stylistic direction in my photography? Stay tuned and find out! Like yesterday’s photograph, this subject was on the kitchen counter. I needed something to test out a new camera with a macro lenses, no tiny bugs were handy, so here we are.

As I pondered these two kitchen photographs it stuck me that the patterns, especially with all of the soft blur in the images, reminded me of some close-up photograph s I have made of grasses and similar plants.

Manhattan, often referred to locally as the City, is the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City and its economic and administrative center, cultural identifier, and historical birthplace. The borough is coextensive with New York County, one of the original counties of the U.S. state of New York. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the Hudson, East, and Harlem rivers; several small adjacent islands; and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood now on the U.S. mainland, physically connected to the Bronx and separated from the rest of Manhattan by the Harlem River. Manhattan Island is divided into three informally bounded components, each aligned with the borough's long axis: Lower, Midtown, and Upper Manhattan.

Manhattan has been described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world, and the borough hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in Manhattan, and the borough has been the setting for numerous books, films, and television shows. Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013; median residential property sale prices in Manhattan approximated US$1,600 per square foot ($17,000/m2) as of 2018, with Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commanding the highest retail rents in the world, at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017.

Manhattan traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. Manhattan is historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626 for 60 guilders, which equals roughly $1038 in current terms. The territory and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York, based in present-day Manhattan, served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. Manhattan became a borough during the consolidation of New York City in 1898.

New York County is the United States' second-smallest county by land area (larger only than Kalawao County, Hawaii), and is also the most densely populated U.S. county. It is also one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a census-estimated 2017 population of 1,664,727 living in a land area of 22.83 square miles (59.13 km2), or 72,918 residents per square mile (28,154/km2), higher than the density of any individual U.S. city. On business days, the influx of commuters increases this number to over 3.9 million, or more than 170,000 people per square mile (65,600/km2). Manhattan has the third-largest population of New York City's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens, and is the smallest borough in terms of land area. Manhattan Island is often informally divided into three areas, each aligned with its long axis: Lower, Midtown, and Upper Manhattan.

Many districts and landmarks in Manhattan are well known, as New York City received a record 62.8 million tourists in 2017, and Manhattan hosts three of the world's 10 most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The borough hosts many prominent bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge; skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building; and parks, such as Central Park. Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, and the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, part of the Stonewall National Monument, is considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. The City of New York was founded at the southern tip of Manhattan, and the borough houses New York City Hall, the seat of the city's government. Numerous colleges and universities are located in Manhattan, including Columbia University, New York University, Cornell Tech, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 40 in the
