Not used much for a couple of years but back on road. Still dusty. Needs a wash.

Who knew? After it's Hollywood acting role, D&RGW Consolidation engine #268, C-16 class 2-4-0s, would have to go right back to work. Here it is again hauling a freight drag in the Rockies. At least, it got a free Hollywood paint job. Maybe D& RGW (Dangerous and Rapidly Growing Worse) thought that they could expand on the Hollywood notariety and it's paint scheme - livery per rail fans. Some rail fans like Neal, called the engine's exhaust a "bituminous cloud." This is another of Neal Miller's photos he passed to me. I hope he donated his massive book collection (even the Colorado Midland book - worth hundreds itself) to the Colorado Railroad Museum before passing some time ago.

The D&RGW ordered a raft of consolidation (C-16) engines to haul freight throughout the Colorado Rockies. Were they all from BLW - Baldwin Locomotive Works out east? Only later did they order larger engines and start converting standard gauge engines to narrow gauge, the 480s and 490s, which also worked several movies in their day. I thought that I ought to get this copy posted while Neal's previous #268 shot is still on this page. This is a significant version.

With a lot of stuff loaded into in the back, it is just being used well. I hope it lives to see the day it is cherished.

Although the LNER B12 class 4.6.0s were steadily withdrawn between the late 1940s until 1959, 61572 survived until 1961 and was subsequently bought for preservation. Two years later it was back running on BR, as seen here, working the M&GNRS Wandering 1500 rail tour on 5 October. This ran from London Broad Street and back, via various lines in Northamptonshire & Warwickshire as detailed in the link below. The former SMJR Towcester station had closed as early as 1952.

There were two 2-6-0s out today and the other one, British Railways Standard 2 78018, is seen entering Rothley from Leicester with the returning non-stop 13.00 diner.

Rothley Brook is in a dip between the 1 in 176 gradient southwards seen climbing behind the train and the same gradient up into the station. The speed limit here is 10mph and the driver of 78018 has just opened the regulator to keep the train rolling into the Down platform which has probably eased the chance of blowing off evident from the feathering safety valves.

The ground dolly on the right controls wrong line movements out of the Down platform.

Grand Trunk Western P5g class 0-8-0 #8380 was part of the GTW's final order for 0-8-0s in 1929. Slow but powerful, the 0-8-0s formed the back bone of GTW's switching fleet. Many of them served into the late 1950s until finally being replaced by diesel power. #8380 was one of a dozen GTW 0-8-0s sold to Northwestern Steel & Wire Co in 1960. Originally all sold for scrap, several were found to be in great condition and were converted to oil firing, then put to work switching NWSWCo's plant in Sterling, IL, a task they did until 1980. Upon retirement, #8380 was donated to the Illinois Railway Museum, where it is displayed today.

This new Corgi Vanguards Capri rather surprised me when it was delivered today. I had ordered it many months ago when first announced.

With a quick re-registration it now represents the 2.0S that I ran for a few years around 1990.

It's shown here with the Kingsway Models 1/43 scale OTC Tyre Centre card kit.

Both the 2MTs were withdrawn in mid-1966, but 46464 was preserved, and is currently a long-term restoration project, based at the Strathspey Railway.

The branch line here had closed to passengers back in 1929, and closed completely by 1967.. Today (2023) the trackbed here has reverted to farmland..

The Mark V was announced on 24 August 1979. A large update on the Mark IV, it was really a step between a facelift and a rebody. The Mark V differentiated itself from the Mark IV by having revised headlights with larger turn indicators incorporated (which now showed to the side too), a wider slatted grille said to be more aerodynamically efficient, a flattened roof, more glass area, slimmer C-pillars with revised vent covers, larger, slatted tail lights (on saloon models) and upgraded trim.

Improvements were also made to the engine range, with slight improvements to both fuel economy and power output compared to the Mk.IV, Ford also claimed improved corrosion protection.

The estate models combined the Mk IV's bodyshell (which was initially from the 1970 Ford Taunus) with Mk V front body pressings.

Variants included the Base, L, GL, and Ghia (all available in saloon and estate forms), together with Base and L spec 2-door sedan versions (this bodystyle was available up to Ghia V6 level on overseas markets).

S package

The replacement for the previous Mark IV S models was an S package of optional extras, which was available as an upgrade on most Mark V models from L trim level upwards. For the final model year of 1982, this consisted of front and rear bumper overriders, sports driving lamps, an S badge on the boot, tachometer, four-spoke steering wheel, revised suspension settings, front gas shock absorbers, Sports gear-lever knob, Sports road wheels, and fishnet Recaro sports seats (optional). Various "special editions" were announced, including the Calypso and Carousel.
