Jan Steyn passed away on October 11, 2013. He was a part of my life from the early-70's and was one of those people some of us thought would never go away - he was just too iconic. When I came out of the military in 1981, I bought my first car from Jan - he was the original owner of my fantastic, mustard-coloured Fiat 125S :-) The man had a sense of humour second to none, was THE braai-meister, and a master aeromodeller. In 2010 or 2011 Jan shared with me 100 photos of Gerald D. Matchett's scrap book which documents aeromodelling activities in Pretoria, Johannesburg, and across South Africa from 1941 through 1972. It also features my late father - Beau Pautz - at the 1948 National Model Aircraft Championships held in Pretoria on March 28 and 29, 1948 (see photo 10.jpg). Also featured is my father's friend from the UK Geoff A. Kemp, photographed at the South African Model Aircraft Championships, Cape Town, that were held on 12-14 April 1952 (see photo 54.jpg).
The second half of the scrap book (from 31 March 1964) was the work of Steven Douthwaite Matchett and focuses more on full-sized gliding.
