I met Alyssa in Santa Cruz which makes her the first (and so far only) stranger that I have photographed outside of San Francisco, which was one of my goals since I think the culture and vibe of San Francisco makes it easy to ask strangers for their photograph. I was walking with a friend in downtown Santa Cruz when I noticed that Alyssa was working in a kiosk on the sidewalk where they serve coffee drinks and ice cream. She was drawing on a napkin and looked a little bored since the area was not really busy with customers.
We talked to Alyssa for a few minutes and it turns out that she is a senior art student at UC Santa Cruz, which explains why she was practicing drawing. She seemed excited about graduating soon and to have someone else to talk to. She was very friendly and nice. I focused in on her nose piercing but later wished I had used a smaller aperture to get more in focus. I asked her to lean out of the window of the kiosk a little bit for more even lighting on her face, but even that was not enough. While I was checking my shots, some customers walked up and I did not want to bother her for another attempt at correcting the shadows.
