Christmas time in SF means a couple special things for us photographers: The Beacon is lit atop the Transamerica Building and 17,000 lights outline the four Embarcadero Center buildings. Because of this I had 2 shots I really wanted to take: 1) the SF skyline from Treasure Island, under the bay bridge (see previous photo), and 2) "Thread the Needle" -- the Transamerica Beacon taken through the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Having already shot the skyline from Treasure Island I needed to go back and get The Beacon in the GGB.
I convinced my friend Zack to leave work and drive up to SF with me. Luckily the traffic was pretty light and we made it to Marin in plenty of time to setup and wait for the blue hour. Zack's D70x wasn't really working so I leant him my D300s while I used the D700. Having been here before I knew that I really wanted ~300mm on a DX body so I was going to have to hope that my 70-300mm lens on the D700 would be good enough and I could just crop it. Unfortunately, the 70-300mm is not exactly the best lens, produces ugly lightstars and didn't take very good pictures. Just as blue hour (or the 5 minutes of it) hit, I asked Zack to switch lenses and borrowed his 80-200 f/2.8 lens, which was MUCH better.
I tried numerous different compositions, and I even have the typical close crop of this but ultimately I liked including the bridge in this photo. I think it shows more of the scene and puts a little more focus on San Francisco as opposed to a tighter cropping focusing on the beacon. We call this "threading the needle" because the Beacon, which looks like a needle, fits perfectly in the north tower of the GGB. Note that the photo may looks like it's not properly leveled because the bridge appears to go up in the photo … I assure you that this photo is actually level (and I even double checked before/after I took the photo), it's just an illusion due to the angle the photo was taken.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a panoramic road in Austria. The most famous route through the Alps ends just before the jewel in the Hohe Tauern national park's crown: the highest mountain and the largest glacier in Austria, the Großglockner 3.798 m and its glacier, the Pasterze. You will have a driving and nature experience of a special kind on 48 kilometres of high alpine road with 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres! You pass through a unique world of mountains with blossoming alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests, massive cliffs and eternal ice to the foot of the Grossglockner, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. The route is described in the brochure as a Bikers Heaven. The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße Road was built between 1930 and 1935, to fight unemployment and boost tourism in Salzburg. It is in within the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Closed in winter until end of October to beginning of May.
The Mooserboden is a valley basin, which was formed by the Glacier Pasterze. The basin collects the meltwater of the glacier Pasterze. Eventually the water will pass through the main Alpine ridge to the Möll river eventually into the Danube - Donau river.
De Großglockner Hochalpenstraße is één van de mooiste bergwegen ter wereld en zeker de moeite waard om te bezichtigen. Deze panoramische tolweg verbindt de deelstaat Salzburg met Karinthië. De 47,8 km lange weg leidt middenin het Hohe Tauern National Park naar de hoogste berg van Oostenrijk, de Großglockner 3.798m en zijn gletsjer, de Pasterze. De Pasterzegletsjer is wel 10 km lang en heeft een oppervlakte van bijna 20 m2. De Großglockner Alpenstraße voert je door een wild en rotsachtig landschap. Maar liefst 36 haarspeldbochten zorgen ervoor dat je uiteindelijk tot een hoogte van 2.504 meter stijgt. Tijdens de rit wordt je getrakteerd op adembenemende uitzichten. Ook kun je genieten van de aanblik van enkele honderden bergtoppen van boven de 3.000 meter. Twee kilometer voor de Grossglockner onder het einde van de gletsjer Pasterze ligt de emerald groene Margaritze Stuwmeer. Deze Stausee is een dam, die wordt gevoed door het smeltwater van de gletsjer Pasterze. Onderweg op de Großglockner Alpenstraße kun je eventueel stoppen bij verschillende uitzichtplaatsen en informatiepunten. Voor kinderen zijn er speeltuintjes en ook is het mogelijk om in echte sneeuw te spelen. Er zijn tevens 2 kabelbanen die je de mogelijkheid bieden om nog meer van de mooie omgeving te bekijken.

The founding families of Sharon first settled on a flat plain bordering the Shenango River (this area is situated between two hills and is the current location of Sharon's downtown business district). According to local legend, the community received its name from a Bible-reading settler who likened the location to the Plain of Sharon in Israel.
Initially a center of coal mining, Sharon's economy transitioned to steelmaking and other heavy industry following the Industrial Revolution. Following the extensive national deindustrialization of the 1970s and 80's, the city's economy diversified and is now based primarily on light industry, education, health care, and social services.

The Ponte Pietra (Italian for "Stone Bridge"), once known as the Pons Marmoreus, is a Roman arch bridge crossing the Adige River in Verona, Italy. The bridge was completed in 100 BC, and the Via Postumia from Genua to the Brenner Pass passed over it.
It originally flanked another Roman bridge, the Pons Postumius; both structures provided the city (on the right bank) with access to the Roman theatre on the east bank. The arch nearest to the right bank of the Adige was rebuilt in 1298 by Alberto I della Scala. Four arches of the bridge were blown up by retreating German troops in World War II, but rebuilt in 1957 with original materials.

Update: I don't normally do this but after failing to have The Beacon lit on our first attempt, we went back about a week later and were more successful! I placed the now lit Beacon onto the original photo and have replaced the one I uploaded to flickr with the new version (since I don't believe in "reposting"). I've updated the EXIF time so that you can all see the new version, if you like.
Willie and I have been wanting to take the (now popular) San Francisco skyline photo from under the Bay Bridge for a while now. The photo is much much nicer during the holiday time when 17,000 lights outlining the Embarcadero Center buildings are turned on and a bright white light (called The Beacon) is turned on at the Transamerica Building (the triangular building). Willie had been checking the SF webcams and it looked like The Beacon was being lit each night. Last year it had been lit by this time of year so we thought we should be pretty safe in making sure The Beacon would be lit.
We left work early and headed out to Treasure Island with plenty of time to find parking, hike up the hill, find "the spot" and then get setup. Unfortunately when US-101 and I-280 merged we hit a HUGE Friday afternoon holiday traffic. We arrived at Treasure Island much much later than planned (almost an hour later), and had to high tail it up the hill and over the Bay Bridge (we were both sweating pretty badly). After hopping the guard rail we actually found the spot pretty easily (just as we were walking over the Bridge a CalTrans truck drove by and screamed over the loud speaker "No photographs from this side of the bridge." We kept walking). We scouted out the area for a while, found our spots and then waited for the light to get nice.
When I originally composed this image I wanted to make the SF Cityscape as large as possible, which meant that I clipped off some of the lights on the Bay Bridge. Once it got dark enough I realized that I really did want to include the extra light on the Bridge and I had zoom out and recomposed to get this final composition.
Luckily for us there was an absolutely BEAUTIFUL sunset that night, which makes the photo much more interesting. Unfortunately though, as the sun began to set we noticed that the Transamerica Beacon was NOT going to turn on :(. The city lights started to come on, then the 17,000 Embarcadero Center lights were visible but The Beacon stayed a flashing red light. No luck for us. This meant that Willie and I would have to come back at another time, hoping the Beacon would be lit. Our second attempt was made 6 days later, after we both confirmed that The Beacon was lit at 5pm the previous couple of nights. The Beacon was the first light we could see on our 2nd attempt! Unfortunately on the 2nd night the sky was extremely boring and the photo didn't turn out as well as the previous week. I decided to composite the 2 trips and put the lit Beacon on top of the original photo. I hope you enjoy.

Les débuts[modifier]
En 1893, Théophile Bader et Alphonse Kahn, deux cousins, s'associent et reprennent un commerce de Nouveautés.
En 1894 ils ouvrent le magasin Les Galeries Lafayette à l'angle de la rue La Fayette et de la rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin, plus de quarante ans après Le Bon Marché. Le magasin est idéalement placé à proximité de l'Opéra Garnier, des grands boulevards et de la gare Saint-Lazare. Très vite, il attire les employées de bureaux et la petite et moyenne bourgeoisie.
En 1896, la société achète la totalité de l'immeuble du 1, rue La Fayette et, en 1903, les immeubles des 38, 40 et 42, boulevard Haussmann ainsi que le 15, rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin. Georges Chedanne puis Ferdinand Chanut sont chargés de l'agencement de ces nouvelles acquisitions.
Un magasin de luxe[modifier]
En 1900, la marque Aux Galeries Lafayette est déposée.
En 1908, le premier magasin situé sur le boulevard Haussmann est ouvert.
En octobre 1912, le nouveau magasin est inauguré. Il est composé de 96 rayons, d'un salon de thé, d'une bibliothèque et d'un salon de coiffure. Il a cinq étages, des balcons et une grande coupole. Celle-ci, inspirée par le style byzantin, a 33 mètres de hauteur, est constituée de dix faisceaux de vitraux peints, enserrés dans une armature métallique richement sculptée de motifs floraux. Les balustres des étages inférieurs, ornées de feuillages, sont signées Louis Majorelle, à qui l'on doit également la rampe d'escalier. Selon les vœux de Théophile Bader, une lumière dorée, venant de la coupole, inonde le grand hall, avec son escalier d'honneur, et fait scintiller la marchandise. Au sommet du bâtiment, une terrasse permet de découvrir Paris et sa nouvelle Tour Eiffel. Les vitrines jouent un grand rôle dans cette mise en scène : elles doivent éveiller toutes les envies et tous les désirs. Tout est fait pour que le client se sente bien et ait envie d'acheter.

Le magasin est tout entier dévoué à la nouveauté et à la mode. La démocratisation de la mode est en marche et le succès est au rendez-vous. Puis le magasin diversifie son offre : aux rayons traditionnels sont ajoutés la confection pour homme, l'ameublement, les jouets, les arts de la table.
Le 19 janvier 1919, Jules Védrines pose son avion, un Caudron G III, sur la terrasse.
L’après-guerre[modifier]
Après la grande dépression qui suivit la crise de 1929 et la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les années 1950 voient la reprise.
De nombreuses opérations commerciales apparaissaient, comme la venue d'Édith Piaf, qui accepte de venir chanter en 1950 alors qu'elle est la star préférée des Français. En 1953, les Galeries Lafayette inaugurent une nouvelle conception du commerce en lançant la première d'une longue série d'expositions. En 1958 sont lancés « les 3J », des articles d'actualité et de bonne qualité mis en vente à des prix exceptionnellement bas pendant trois jours.
Entre 1952 et 1956, les premiers escalators sont installés, les halls intérieurs sont supprimés et deux étages sont ajoutés.
Des années 1960 à 2000[modifier]
En 1969, un nouveau magasin, réservé à la mode masculine, est construit de l'autre côté de la rue de Mogador.
Les Galeries Lafayette s'imposent comme un acteur important dans la création et révèlent à chaque saison de nouveaux talents en mettant à leur disposition de petites boutiques dans le magasin. C'est le cas de Daniel Hechter, Pierre Cardin, Cacharel, Yves Saint Laurent, entre autres.
En 1974, on démonte l'escalier d'honneur et, en 1984, le rez-de-chaussée central est modifié afin d'ouvrir des boutiques de prestige.
À partir de 1975, les Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, avec leurs 47 800 m2 de surface de vente, occupent la première place française en réalisant un chiffre d'affaires supérieur à celui du Printemps, du BHV Rivoli, de la Samaritaine et du Bon Marché.
En 1980, le magasin affirme encore davantage sa vocation pour la mode en créant le Festival de la Mode qui rencontre un franc succès.
Noël 2004
En 1996, les Galeries Lafayette fêtent leur centième anniversaire. Pour l'occasion, quelques grandes marques rééditent un de leurs grands classiques.
En 2009, une surface de vente dédiée aux chaussures pour femmes est ouvert au 1er sous-sol, sur une superficie de 3000m². Cela en fait le second plus grand magasin du monde en matière de chaussures, derrière le magasin Selfridges de Londres.
En 2010, ouvre une Bordeauxthèque, plus grande cave de Bordeaux au monde (1 500 références)2.
Aujourd’hui[modifier]
De nos jours, le magasin est en permanente évolution et modernisation3.
Les Chinois arrivent aujourd'hui en tête de la clientèle étrangère des Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, devançant les Américains et les Japonais. Depuis le 1er septembre 2009, elles ont doublé leur chiffre d'affaires réalisé par la clientèle chinoise. Celle-ci, selon le magasin, achète principalement des parfums et des accessoires et affectionne tout particulièrement le luxe et le savoir-faire à la française. Pour les accueillir, le magasin a mis en place une équipe composée d'une douzaine de collaborateurs parlant mandarin et cantonais. Des plans en chinois et des trousses d'accueil spéciales ont été conçus pour faciliter la découverte du magasin par les Chinois.

It is rather unusual, at least here in Iceland, to take nature shots together with a city landscape.
It's a fact to ponder on. Wild nature is all around us here, while cities are a minority. But most people in old Europe and the Americas will have to make a carefull search to actually find "nature" in their whereabouts (not to mention 'wild' nature).
The title "City Ends Nature" has a double sense. It both describes the shot, and reminds us of how we came to lose our contact with nature.
I should mention, by the way, that this river, called Elliðaár, is among top 10 salmon fishing rivers in Iceland. It's only 5 km long.

More than you probably want to know:
This was once the largest flour mill in the world; the General Mills Washburn A. Mill where they made 'Gold Medal' brand flour. The Mill was in operation from 1880 to 1965 when it was closed down because new technologies made river power obsolete. In 1991 the long abandoned building was gutted by fire and almost totally destroyed. The city was about to tear it down when the Minneapolis Community Development Agency stepped in and saved the historic structure - they cleared the rubble, stabilized the blown out walls and in 2003 the Minnesota Historical Society turned the ruins into the fascinating Mill City Museum www.millcitymuseum.org
That black structure sticking out over the walkway (lower left corner) is the Guthrie Theater's amazing 'endless bridge' cantilevered observation deck that offers some awesome views of the entire river front area www.guthrietheater.org
De 1958 aux années 1970 : la première phase du centre d'affaires[modifier]
En septembre 1958, l'Établissement public pour l'aménagement de la Défense (EPAD) est créé par l'État pour construire, gérer et animer le quartier. La Défense commence à se dessiner. Un premier plan d'aménagement est approuvé par l'État en 1964. Les premiers immeubles dont la tour Esso et la tour Nobel sont construits et viennent remplacer petit à petit les usines (liées à la mécanique et à l'automobile), les bidonvilles voisins et quelques fermes. Le Centre des Nouvelles Industries et Technologies (CNIT) dessiné par les architectes Robert Camelot, Jean de Mailly et Bernard Zehrfuss, prévu dès 1956 avant l'EPAD, est inauguré en 1958 par le général de Gaulle à l'occasion de l'exposition Les Floralies. Les tours obéissant à ce premier plan, dites de première génération, sont toutes d'un gabarit identique : une base de 42 mètres sur 24, limitées à une hauteur de 100 mètres et d'une surface de 30 000 m2. En 1966, la tour Nobel (architecte Jean de Mailly) est la première tour à se dresser à La Défense.
Au début des années 1970, les tours de deuxième génération font leur apparition pour répondre à une forte demande. Le plan de 1964 est modifié pour augmenter la surface des immeubles. Des tours de 10 000 m2 voient le jour comme la tour Fiat (aujourd'hui Areva), culminant à 184 m avec ses 44 étages. À partir de 1973, la crise économique ralentit fortement le développement de ce quartier qui est au plus mal : pas un mètre carré de bureau ne se vend pendant quatre ans.
Les années 1980 et 1990 : reprise de l'expansion[modifier]
Le parvis de la Défense, entre la coupole du CNIT à gauche et le centre commercial des Quatre Temps à droite, vu depuis les escaliers de la Grande Arche.
Dès le début des années 1980, pour relancer la construction de la Défense, des tours de troisième génération sont érigées, sur un modèle plus économique : moins larges et moins hautes comme les tour Pascal, tour Voltaire et tout le quartier Michelet. Le plus grand centre commercial d'Europe de l'époque (100 000 m2), les Quatre Temps, est créé en 1981. En 1982, l'EPAD, sous l'impulsion du président François Mitterrand, lance le concours « Tête Défense » qui conduira à la construction de la Grande Arche. Durant cette même période, des hôtels sont bâtis, le CNIT est remodelé (1989) et le prolongement de la ligne 1 du métro de Paris, inauguré le 1er avril 1992, rapproche davantage La Défense de Paris intra-muros.
À cette époque, Christian Pellerin7,8 est un des principaux promoteurs du quartier de La Défense. Sacré « Roi de la Défense » dans les années 1980, puis déchu à la suite de plusieurs condamnations9.
En 1991 est prévue la construction de la tour sans fins de Jean Nouvel, second plus haut gratte-ciel du monde à l'époque avec ses 426 mètres après la Sears Tower de Chicago, pour une livraison en 1993. Le projet fut abandonné.
En 1993, la Défense connaît sa seconde crise. Il faut attendre 1997 pour qu'un redémarrage spectaculaire surgisse, illustré par la construction des tours de Cœur Défense, par Jean Paul Viguier architecte, alors le plus grand projet de ce type construit en Europe; les tours jumelles de Cœur Défense seront livrées en 2001. Aujourd'hui, La Défense est le premier quartier d'affaires d'Europe10. Banques et assurances ont investi les lieux, quittant les quartiers traditionnels qu'ils occupaient à Paris entre la Bourse et l'Opéra.
Les principales sociétés installées sont Cegetel, la Société générale, Total, Aventis. La plus grande tour est celle de Total, anciennement tour Elf, construite en 1985. Avec 48 étages sur 187 mètres de hauteur, c'est le deuxième plus grand gratte-ciel de France après la tour Montparnasse ; les deux tours sont des mêmes architectes Roger Saubot et François Jullien.
Une partie des services du ministère des Transports, de l'Équipement, du Tourisme et de la Mer est implantée dans la Grande Arche et la tour Pascal.
De nouvelles tours de hauteur comparable, appelées Tour T1 (185 mètres) des architectes Valode et Pistre et Tour Granite (184 mètres) ont été achevées en 2008.
La Défense 2015 : l'esquisse d'un nouveau grand projet[modifier]

Suite à la lettre de mission du secrétaire d’État aux Transports, à l’Équipement, du Tourisme et de la Mer en date du 1er mars 2005, Bernard Bled, directeur général de l'EPAD, a proposé le 2 décembre 2005 à son conseil d'administration le projet La Défense 2015, un important plan de modernisation du quartier d'affaires afin de lui conférer une dimension nouvelle. Les principaux axes sont:
régénérer les tours obsolètes,
autoriser de nouvelles constructions,
veiller à l'équilibre bureaux/logements,
faciliter les liaisons avec les lieux d'habitation des salariés de la Défense.
Les objectifs sont :
la construction de 150 000 m2 de bureaux supplémentaires dans le cadre des opérations de démolition/reconstruction,
la construction de 300 000 m2 de bureaux dans le cadre d'opérations neuves,
la réalisation de 100 000 m2 de logements.
L’État a validé en juillet 2006 ce plan de relance dont la finalisation est annoncée autour de 2015 et qui permettrait au quartier d'affaires de confirmer son leadership européen dans le marché de bureaux, avec environ 4 000 000 m2 de surfaces tertiaires. Ce plan de renouveau pourrait également permettre de développer l'importance financière de Paris en Europe, marché aujourd'hui très largement dominé par Londres.
Plusieurs faits peuvent justifier ce plan. La très forte pression immobilière pousse à la création de nouvelles tours de bureaux à Paris ou à proximité, nettement plus économiques que les multiples petites constructions ou la transformation de bâtiments résidentiels existants et qui auraient l'avantage de ne pas nuire au parc immobilier de résidence en région parisienne. Par son emplacement, et des règles d'urbanisme plus souples que dans Paris même, la Défense offre de réelles possibilités. D'autres secteurs proches de Paris sont envisagés en Seine-Saint-Denis (plus accessible et plus proche aussi des zones économiques des aéroports de Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, les possibilités de transport étant beaucoup moins saturées), un département où les tours résidentielles sont fort nombreuses afin de rééquilibrer tissu résidentiel et activité économique. Cependant, c'est plutôt au sud de Paris (plus accessible depuis la zone aéroportuaire d'Orly) que devrait se développer immédiatement une nouvelle zone en rive de Seine prolongeant les secteurs parisiens de Tolbiac et Bercy. Les promoteurs du projet de la Défense pensent que c'est la Défense qui sera le moteur permettant d'attirer les entreprises étrangères en France, et que cela favorisera l'activité des autres pôles économiques tout autour de Paris.
Il devra toutefois surmonter plusieurs facteurs de blocage : perspectives médiocres à court terme de l'économie française, volonté des pouvoirs publics de rééquilibrer un emploi du secteur tertiaire trop concentré dans les Hauts-de-Seine, moyens de transport saturés ne permettant pas de faire face à l'afflux de nouveaux salariés (le prolongement de la ligne RER E envisagé est une opération financière très lourde).
La relance des projets de démolition-reconstruction, permettant d'optimiser les espaces et d'éviter les coûteux réaménagements ou consolidation d'immeubles existants en vue de leur rehausse, ont été grandement facilités par la décision publique de ne plus taxer la construction de toute la surface de bureaux construite, mais seulement la surface supplémentaire apportée par la reconstruction.
Fin 2011, 10 projets sont en cours de réalisation ou sont à l'état d'études (ce qui ne présage pas d'une réalisation effective) dans le périmètre de la Défense :

Tour First : construction terminée - Inaugurée en mai 2011.

D2 : démolition reconstruction de l'immeuble Veritas - en chantier
Carpe Diem : démolition reconstruction de l'immeuble France Telecom - en chantier
AVA : démolition reconstruction de l'immeuble Berkeley
À Puteaux :
Tour Phare : construction nouvelle
Immeuble Basalte : construction nouvelle - en chantier
Majunga : construction nouvelle - en chantier
D'ici à 2015, le quartier d'affaires de la Défense comporterait ainsi 2 tours de plus de 300 m (Hermitage Plaza x2) , 3 tours de plus de 200 m (Tour First, Tour Phare, et Air²), 20 tours de plus de 150 m et 46 tours de plus de 100 m.

As Christmas is fast approaching I am sure many of you have or are about to get your Christmas tree up. In our household our tree has just gone up so I thought that it was time for this festive photo to go up also. Many of you guys who regularily comment on my posts are all over the world, I felt that these aircraft would be very apt, representing the five continents of the globe, In fact it "makes me want to oh oh oh oh oh oh, London to Jamaica, LA to Africa" or should it be ho, ho, ho, ho, ho makes me want to! (homage to JLS's She makes me wanna oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh......)
Of interest the aircraft in this post were all taken from the same spot, Putney, London as they descended towards Heathrow airport last summer with me sat on my back shooting skywards, further details are:
