About Reflections

Reflection is the change in direction of a wavefront at an interface between two different media so that the wavefront returns into the medium from which it originated. Common examples include the reflection of light, sound and water waves. The law of reflection says that for specular reflection the angle at which the wave is incident on the surface equals the angle at which it is reflected.

Reflection of light is either specular (mirror-like) or diffuse (retaining the energy, but losing the image) depending on the nature of the interface. Furthermore, if the interface is between a dielectric and a conductor, the phase of the reflected wave is retained, otherwise if the interface is between two dielectrics, the phase may be retained or inverted, depending on the indices of refraction.

This is the most amazing gift I have ever received I think mainly because of the story behind it. It's a Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera.

Last Friday I posted an image on my tumblr of this camera that someone else had taken, not knowing that the Monday before, my Friend Lauren Collins purchased one for me.

About The Shot:

Keluar di pagi hari mengikut abang-abang menjala ikan, saya pun ikut diorang tapi bukan pikul jala, pikul tripod ;p Cadang nak HDR-kan gambar ni, tapi tengok dari 3 exposure yang saya shot, yang ada ni dah cukup berkenan di hati, maka saya lupakan proses tone mapping, terus je upload yang ni. Editing?

Canggu is a small village in west coast of Bali, the village of Canggu is a relatively peaceful destination where verdant rice terraces literally stretch out towards one of the island’s best surf beaches.

Because of its slightly out of town setting, it has the double attraction of being relatively close to everything one might need, while being far enough away to retain a peaceful rural feel.

The best time to take landscape photo is during sunset or sunrise, around that time you can get the best quality of light and colours. What about taking landscape photo in normal light? I found that daylight photo shot is quite challenging, it needs extra creativity due to a bright "flat" light. HOYA NDX400(9stops) and other dark filters such B+W110(10stops) or Singh-Ray Vari-ND(2-8stops) are a great tools in dealing with extreme daylight and/or to make long exposure during the day!

Thanks to those who send me emails about daytime photo shot, i hope this could answer your questions ^_^

The Jordaan is a district of the city of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. The Anne Frank House, where Anne Frank went into hiding during World War II, is located on the edge of the Jordaan, on the Prinsengracht canal. Rembrandt spent the last years of his life in the Jordaan, on the Rozengracht canal. He was buried in the Westerkerk church, at the corner of Rozengracht and Prinsengracht, just beyond the Jordaan. The most common theory on the origin of the name is as a derivation of the French word jardin, meaning garden. Most streets and canals in the Jordaan are named after trees and flowers. Built in the first half of the 17th century to house the working class, the Jordaan is now one of the most expensive, upscale locations in the Netherlands. In the Jordaan it's more easy to have a bike or red Vespa scooter since car parking is the most expensive in the world. Daily unsecured parking in the Amsterdam Jordaan cost 5 €/hour or 7.10 US$/hour.

Believe it or not: many Dutch people don’t mind the winter in Amsterdam. Probably because the city is built for it! Ever heard of the Dutch word gezellig? A real translation doesn’t exist, but the English word cozy comes pretty close. In the Netherlands we put a lot of effort in making a place look and feel gezellig. A lot of cafés in Amsterdam use wood and warm colours for the interior combined with dim light, sometimes comfy couches and nice little corners. Since the houses are very old, it’s exceptional to get a license for a fireplace. Some places have one though. Just because nothing beats a glass of red wine in front of the fire after a whole snowy day of strolling around in Amsterdam !

Last weekend it snows and it was -6 degrees Celsius. The heavy snowfall is too bad for ice skating. So I had walk around the canals of my neighborhood. Photo taken here at the Brouwersgracht in Amsterdam. A image of a classic red Vespa scooter. This smallframe Piaggio PK range was made in the early '80s. The largeframe Vespa scooter known as the PX range were manufactured in the late '70s. The Vespa was the first globally successful scooter. This red one is not mine. My red scooter is in my basement free of snow. In Amsterdam center it's more easy to have a bike or scooter since car parking in Amsterdam is the most expensive in the world. Daily unsecured parking in Amsterdam Jordaan cost 5 €/hour or 7.10 US$/hour. Not a lot of people can effort or want to sponsor our local authorities! So whenever I go abroad I'm always smiling about the cheap parking fees compared with Amsterdam.

I get stupidly excited in the snow, kinda revert back to a 6 year old! Love it.

It screwed up my travel home from London yesterday big time, but I forgave it!

Taking these in a strappy top was COLD.

Last night I went the Heathrow Airport with my friends. On that day, one of my friend was going to Bangladesh for holiday. We went there only for him not for photography purposes. But I don't forget to put my camera inside of my bag. When my friend was busy with his check-in process, i went to out side of heathrow airport for smoking with my another friend. I noticed colours, colours and colours. I liked those a lot and did not forget to have a shot of the modern architecture. And this is the architecture that I took from there.

In winter, Amsterdammers watch the falling thermometer readings with the same focus as people in Aspen and Chamonix. When the temperature drops low enough for long enough, the lakes and the canals become sparkling highways for the skaters. Little kiosks are set up on the ice to dispense heart-warming liqueurs. I really love this part of our culture. Almost everyone, young or old, likes to skate and is smiling and friendly. Today it's the first day of ice skating on natural ice at Ransdorp nearby Amsterdam. Dutch skaters enjoying the kilometers of natural ice. During the month January and February thousands of geese can be found here in Waterland. The geese are migratory, moving south or west in winter. The greylag geese fly in V- formation to save themselves energy. The next days extreme low temperature of -6 degrees Celcius expected. Too bad it started snowing yesterday which makes it very hard to go skating.

A fast snapshot of a Dutch ice-skate girl taken while I was skating too. A photo of Waterland at the Bloemerdalergouw towards Holysloot - nearby Amsterdam. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. There, many are hoping for further frigid conditions. It was my first time on skates again in this early winter of 2009. It was a cloudy day but at the end of the day the sun came through which gave a beautiful glow. Look at the thousands of geese flying in the background. At this time of year they are easy to find in Waterland. Too bad it started snowing yesterday which makes it very hard to skate. Waterland in the winter is a real skater’s paradise.

“There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again.” - Elizabeth Lawrence.

I recently finished reading this Amazing book by Khaled Hosseini. When I was scourging for what to upload , i saw this and was immediately reminded of "Laila" & "Tariq", the two childhood friends from it. There is another equally important third protagonist, and the story is about , how the never ending Wars in Afghanistan Affect their Lives . . .

here's a conversation between these two . . .

"You changed the subject."

"From what?"

"The empty-headed girls who think you're sexy."

"You know."

"Know what?"

"That I only have eyes for you."

I don't do many self portraits but I had fun with this one. I did not really do much to this shot other than stack every filter I had in my bag on the lens so I could shoot directly into the sun. I can definitely see why having a remote would be good for people who do a lot self portraits. It would have been helpful to have more than 10 seconds to push the button and run up this mountain and try to look relaxed. The view was amazing and I really like the way the water was reflecting behind the buildings in the distance. Also the natural clouds seem to be in a perfect place drawing my eyes right to the sun.

Rodeo Beach - Marin Headlands, California

Sunday afternoon I was having a late lunch when I received a phone call from Jim Patterson. He mentioned that the storms that had been beating the bay area for the past couple of days looked like it was going to let up in just in time for sunset in the San Francisco area, so I thought it over, and decided that it was a opportunity that I just couldn't pass up. So I grabbed my things and headed out to the GGB to meet up with Jim.

We met up and quickly decided that Rodeo was the best for the evening, so on we went. Over the hills and painfully trailing behind a tourist that was taking his sweet time on the only road to Rodeo...

As soon as Jim and I made it to the ever so popular sea stacks, Jim ripped off his shoes and socks, going "Toes to the sand" as I just said " "@%*# it" and left my shoes on. Later, after taking a step backwards and tripping over a low rock, my shoes and pants got soaked! Normally, I brave the cold ocean air in shorts, because 99.9% of the time I end up no less than knee deep in the salty water, but I just didn't have the time to change before I headed out.

Well, after a whirlwind week of shooting all over the bay area, I ended the weekend with this, and a some amazing night images of the storms passing over San Francisco (to be uploaded soon). Also.... Check out what Patrick Smith captured around the same time, just three miles away. Crazy how the conditions can be so different right around the corner.

As always..... Thanks for the views and comments!

For a better view of the faraway monastery and the surrounding landscapes, and to see how tremendously huge these mountains really are, view it large

Sitting on the 4000m high Fotula Pass, we look back at where we came from...far far away, so far its almost invisible, we see the Lamayuru Monastery.

Located in the most fantastic geological folds and schist's rock surroundings, popularly called 'moonscape' thanks to the feel it gives you of being on an alien planet., it is known as one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh, and was built in the 10th Century by two practitioners of Tantric Buddhism.

The site where the monastery stands was once said to be a huge lake. A buddhist saint "Naropa" meditated here for years to cause a crack in the mountain which drained out the lake and gave him the place to lay the founding stones.

When the lake dried out, he found a dead lion lying inside it. On the same spot, he constructed the first temple of the area, known as the Singhe Ghang (Lion Mound).

Lamayuru also marks the meeting place of the Great Himalayan Wall and the East Karakorum Himalaya Ranges.

The west span of the San Francisco-Oakland bay bridge is an amazing suspension bridge, built in 1935! The east span (behind the island) is being rebuilt right now.

102 million vehicles crossed over the bridge in 2008 which makes it the second-busiest bridge in the world behind the George Washington bridge in New York, which carried 108 million.

This span is 10,304 feet long (3,141 m), nearly as long as the world's longest suspension bridge, the 12,826 feet (3,909 m) Akashi Kaikyo bridge in Japan. And there is another 10,000ft non-suspension section to the right of the frame but it is not counted, so the Japanese bridge is considered longer.

It has 5 traffic lanes on the top deck and 5 on the lower deck, so the traffic always packed to the limit, even at night. The George Washington has 7 in each direction, so the traffic is probably better there. Fortunately we have the Bay Area Rapid Transit system with a tunnel on the bottom of the bay crossing underneath the bridge and entering the city almost right underneath where this photo was taken!

This is a rare example where a clear sunset with the sun behind the camera is often better than a sky with clouds. I've tried this shot with cloudy skies and I just can't get it to look as good as this.

The map shows exactly where this is. Parking can be difficult so the transit system is often the best way to get here.

PS - I made a new version of the Diablo Panorama. It is the previous shot to this in my stream.

Went through a few of my South America shots and found this one of Iguazu Falls on the order of Argentina and Brazil. This was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The only complaint I have is not being there long enough to get any up close & personal sunrise or sunset shots :( Technically not the most brilliant shot however this gives a good feel as to what the views are like. There are 275 waterfalls that make up Iguazu Falls. Truly a natural wonder indeed. Wikipedia can give you more specs if interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iguazu_Falls I will be browsing through your streams soon. Darn all those Christmas parties that have kept me away from my precious, precious Flickr friends. Thanks for stopping by!

Auronzo di Cadore is locate in the Province of Belluno in the Italian region Veneto, located about 120 km north of Venice and about 50 km northeast of Belluno. This shot was taken from the bridge. In the background are the mountains Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Cima d'Auronzo and Croda dei Toni.

A rare few clouds in the Dubai sky (but unfortunately not moving fast enough!), it was a good opportunity to use by ND400 filter! I wish I could use it more often.

Digital blending, normal exposure without filter for the rocks, 2 minutes exposures with ND400 filter for the sea & sky, and finalized with a vertorama.

It's been a while since I posted a seascape...Not so much choice in Dubai though.

I wish you all a great week end! The temperatures are getting really nice here (around 20 C), very motivating to go out shooting!

LUSH, TALL AND GREEN TREES. SO CLOSE THAT SUN LIGHT DO NOT PENETRATE . THAT 'S WHY THIS PLACE IS CALLED "BLACK FOREST"

The Famous Cuckoo clocks are made here. And one of the largest Cuckoo clock covers one side of the wall. Every fifteenth minute the clock Strikes, The Chime Chimes and the Dancing dolls goes into action for a minute.

This massive clock and the dancing dolls are powered by water. No electricity is used to drive the mechanism.....................Less Carbon Foot Print.

This place is in midst of Black Forest. Here is well appointed canteen where you can treat yourself to true Black Forest Cake.

It is a true delight indeed.

Buon Compleanno.

virgilio e maddalena.

The Houston tunnel system is a system of tunnels 6 m (about 20 ft) below Houston's downtown street system. The system is 10 km long (6-7 mi depending on the source), and forms a network of subterranean, climate-controlled, pedestrian walkways that link 95 full city blocks.

Today's Tunnel is a series of underground passageways that, with above-ground skywalks, link office towers to hotels, banks, corporate and government offices, restaurants, retail stores, and the Theater District. Only one building, Wells Fargo Plaza, offers direct access from the street to the Tunnel; otherwise, other entry points are from street-level stairs, escalators, and elevators located inside buildings that are connected to the tunnel. Most of the tunnel system is located in the western half of downtown Houston.

The National day of Qatar ( 18 December)

Every December 18th, we celebrate Qatar National Day in commemoration of the historic day in 1878 when Sheikh Jassem, the founder of the State of Qatar, succeeded his father, Sheikh Muhammad Bin Thani, as the ruler and led the country towards unity.

December 18th is the day we remember how Qatari national unity was achieved and how Qatar became a distinct and respected nation out of a society torn apart by conflicting tribal loyalties, devoid of security and order, and overrun by invaders.

Qatar's National Day is about honoring the heroes, leaders and people who built this country.

It's also a chance to reflect on the principles on which Qatar was founded - truth, justice, friendship and brotherhood and to remember the values of generosity, loyalty responsibility and sacrifice which are key to Qatar's success today.

Qatar nation has proved in the past, present, and God willing, the future, to be capable of bringing prosperity and building good relationships, both internally and throughout the Arab and Islamic world.

Qatar has proved that it's more than just oil, gas and commerce, but also a guiding light for education, knowledge, innovation and freedom.

Sheik Jassem died on July 17the 1913 ending a fruitful and memorable life.

He was succeeded by his son Sheikh Abdulla bin Jassem Al Thani.

MEANING OF THE FLAG : The white portion of the Qatar flag symbolizes peace and the maroon, which was formerly red, represents the Kharijite Muslims of Qatar and the bloodshed in Qatar's many wars. The serrated edge represents Qatar as the 9th member of the 'reconciled Emirates' of the Arabian Gulf at the conclusion of the Qatari-British treaty in 1916.
