France. Alpes.

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. Valencia is located on the Costa del Azahar on the Mediterranean Sea and is considered the birthplace of paella, one of the most famous dishes in Spanish cuisine. Valencia is also known as the orange city. Valencia is Spain's third economic engine, after Madrid and Barcelona. Valencia was founded in 138 BC. under the name Valentia Edetanorum, by a Roman leader. Valencia has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and very mild winters. Valencia, like the entire region of Valencia, is officially bilingual; they speak both Spanish and Valencian. Valencian is very closely related to Catalan. Spanish Valencia is more than beach and paella. The highlight that you do not want to miss are the modern buildings of Calatrava. The 'Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències' or 'the City of Arts and Sciences' is a cultural and scientific complex of seven special buildings designed by Calatrava and is located in the drained Turia River of Valencia. It includes Spain's finest aquarium L'Oceanographic, a planetarium, an IMAX theatre, a science museum and a striking event hall. This science park is definitely the number one attraction of Valencia!
The 'City of Arts and Sciences' is a cultural and scientific complex in the Spanish city of Valencia. On the right the L'Hemisfèric - a planetarium and IMAX theater 3D. In addition, on the left the Science Museum where you can experiment with technology by touching and feeling things. Learn all about the environment, science and technology. This is the great 21st century science museum to learn all about life, science and technology in a didactic, interactive and entertaining way. Full interactivity is one of its special features, with the motto: "Forbidden not to touch, not to feel, not to think". In order to generate a pleasant learning process in which the visitor always actively participates.

Montenegro is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and the Adriatic Sea. It used to be a part of Yugoslavia. The capital is Podgorica. The name Montenegro is Italian and means Black mountain. Montenegro was an independent princedom between 1878 and 1910 and an independent kingdom until 1918. That year Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. In 2003 Yugoslavia was transformed into the new country of Serbia and Montenegro, but this fell apart in 2006 when both countries went their separate ways. Montenegro is therefore the youngest country in Europe. Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, but it is a member of NATO. Despite the fact that Montenegro is not yet an EU Member State, people do pay with the euro. Montenegro may be small, but this beautiful nation has a huge array of natural and man-made wonders. Once overlooked in favor of more famous Mediterranean countries, Montenegro is quickly gaining a reputation as a great place to travel. It's easy to see why. The mountainous hinterland is home to deep gorges, flowing rivers, glacial lakes and old-growth forests, popular for adventure activities. Riviera of Budva is situated in the central part of the Montenegrin coast, together with the main tourist centres Budva, Becici, Sveti Stefan, and Petrovac.
Montenegro’s most iconic destination is the tiny islet of Sveti Stefan. Graceful 15th-century stone cottages set on a pink sand beach. Sveti Stefan was an island but is now connected to the mainland. Initially, the island with its fortress had 12 families. In the 1800s, a village was established on the island with a population of about 400 people located at the coastal area around Budva. The coastal area around Budva, called the Budva riviera, is the center of Montenegrin tourism, known for its well-preserved medieval walled city, sandy beaches and diverse nightlife. Budva is 2,500 years old, which makes it one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast.
Stony Batter on Waiheke Island offers a good view to the outer limits of the Hauraki Gulf, a semi enclosed part of the Pacific that is Auckland's maritime playground. It is largely protected from the Pacific by Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island to the north, and by the Coromandel Peninsula to the east. Cape Rodney on the left and the Coromandel Peninsula on the right are part of the mainland. A line connecting them with Little Barrier Island and Great Barrier Island (left and right centre) forms the limit between the Hauraki Gulf and the Pacific Ocean beyond. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauraki_Gulf_/_Tīkapa_Moana#/map/0 The environmental integrity of the gulf has suffered through the introduction of industrialised fishing peaking in the 1970s. This severe overfishing, which unbalanced the marine environment by the removal of a main predator in the food chain, led to a widespread disappearance of kelp beds and their substitution by kina barrens. Kinas are sea urchins which flourish in the absence of the New Zealand snapper and lobsters, their main predators. Dredging of the mussel beds of the Firth of Thames reached a peak in 1961 shortly before collapse of the industry. Particularly damaging are the results of nitrogen carried into the gulf from surrounding agricultural land, with almost 90% coming from the dairy-farming runoff into the Firth of Thames. In 2000 New Zealand established the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. So far the park has failed to prevent overfishing and reverse the ecosystem collapse. Much more needs to be done to clean up the environmental degradation created by commercial interests in the past and present.

This is the final video (which you can watch here: youtu.be/n-ttuRpVqjo) part of last week's outing, a stroll around M&S at Bluewater in those lovely seamed stockings. I did, though, change my skirt for one slightly longer for this walk.
After a year and a half, I finally crossed the international border - I went to visit my friend Goran D in Bihać, Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Once there, we went to the abandoned Željava Air Base, specifically, to Runway 32L, the one on the Bosnian side.
Željava Air Base is quite an interesting location, I hope to visit it again soon. Read more about the base on Wikipedia.

The mountainous hinterland is home to deep gorges, flowing rivers, glacial lakes and old-growth forests, popular for adventure activities. The winding coast runs along pretty blonde bays overlooking the royal blue Adriatic Sea, ancient Venetian villages and UNESCO-walled towns. You get a beautiful view of the Kotor bay from the P1 road to the top of mountain Lovćen, a somewhat steep and very narrow route. From here futher to Jezerski peak to the Njegos Mausoleum at an altitude of 1660 meters, and it officially represents the tallest mausoleum in the world.
The Njegos Mausoleum is a most impressive and very mystic destination. Petar II Petrovic Njegos was the bishop and the ruler of Montenegro. He was the most popular spiritual and military leader in 1800. The mausoleum is situated in the Jezerski peak, at a height of 1660 meters, and it officially represents the highest mausoleum in the world. The road from the beginning plateau for climbing on to the Njegos mausoleum is made of numerous stony stairway (from the foot up to the entrance into the mausoleum there are 461 staircases), and one part of the path leads through a well done and lighted marble tunnel. The area is surrounded by the beauty of beech, oak and linden forests. The fresh mountain air will welcome you compared to the muggy and summer heat, which is characteristic of the Coast. The whole “Sf. Jacob - Barătia” Catholic Church is made up of three distinct elements:
The Bărăția Church, dedicated to Saint Jacob, built in the 13th century. The original choir, built in Gothic style, on ribs, has been preserved to this day. The nave of the church has been decommissioned over time but its foundations have been updated during the restorations of the years 1963-1965. The present form of the church dates from 1760. Inside the church is the tomb of the Saxon committee Laurențiu from Câmpulung, who died in 1300.
The Bărăția Tower. The foundation and the first two levels of the bell tower were built in 1730 in place of an older tower. The last floor with a clock and a pointed roof dates from the end of the 19th century.
The Parish House dating from the 17th century.

Please read below if you are curious about how this shot was taken:
These are silhouette within light bubbles (light bokeh). To create this effect, the prerequisite is that you have a (macro-) zoom lens allowing you to create bokeh effect.
The condition of light source is very important. One light bubble is formed by one light source, and the light source has to be strong and condensed so that you can form a clear light bubble together with a clear silhouette. In this image, these multiple bubbles are formed by dazzling lights on the surface of a lotus pond around noon time when the sky was clear and the sun was high.
The choice of object as the motif is also very important. Imagine about the size of dazzling light laying on the lens toward the sensor of the camera, the object should be something thin, small and delicate, so that you can get a nice silhouette within the bubble.
For making this photograph, you need to put the object in the focal range and aim the camera toward the direction of the light source (so that you are literally shooting a macro silhouette within a bokeh), and then manually adjust the focus, moving the camera as needed, until you get the composition you like in the frame. The angle toward the light source is important. If your light source is the reflective sunlight (such as the dazzling lights in my example), you really need to direct the camera to the point where you have those light coming toward your frame, in order to create the silhouette.

France. Alpes. Savoie. Haute Tarentaise.
Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) was part of a group of Dutch bachelors in pre-war Shanghai. Another member of this group was David van Gelderen (1908-1990), originally from Rotterdam. He arrived in Shanghai in 1933, working for Unilever, a merger of the operations of Dutch Margarine Unie and British soap maker Lever Brothers.
The photo albums of his China years contain many photos of the bachelor life in those days: travel, work, parties, trips within China and to Japan. They also include photos of the bombing of the Unilever factory during the 1937 Japanese attack of Shanghai, membership of the French Special Police and other unique photos.
Like Charles, David was interned in Chapei Civil Assembly Centre by the Japanese from 1943 to 1945.
Being Jewish, internment in Shanghai probably saved David’s life; since all of his family members in the Netherlands were killed by the Nazis.
David married, had two children and continued to work for Unilever. He became member of Nederlandse Reünisten Vereniging China (NRVC, Dutch Reunists Association China).
This photo shows a birthday party held at the Paramount Ballroom at Yue Yuen Road in Shanghai. The party was for the occasion of Frans' and Henk's birthdays, no last names are mentioned. The Paramount Ballroom was a famous venue in Shanghai at the time. Paul French wrote a book about the owner, with a criminal background, Joe Farren, "City of Devils".

My wife and I were reminiscing this afternoon. We don't do that often, but today it started with a discussion, "Which year, which western national park?"
Well, memory does fade - save for the images taken, and we ended up going over 20 years of photos from various trips. In the 20th Century, with and without kids, we managed seven national parks and, in those days, the parrs were in 35mm. I'm still digging.
Our first trip after moving to northern California was to Yosemite on Nov. 11, 1973. The other seven or eight visits are a bit of a blur until we come to 2001. We went to the back country, over Tioga Pass to Devil's Postpile, and back. We hiked to the edge of Sentinel Peak and then did the other three leading to Glacier Point. And we went to five waterfalls. All and all, I think we hiked more than 25 miles. We saw some wildlife, some deer, a couple of chipmunks or maybe they were ground squirrels, some wildflowers...and we had a blast. The park wasn't at all crowded. We even became tourists for a couple of hours and bought two walking sticks from Ansel Adams Gallery in the valley.
We determined to return, and we did. Four times where we spent at least four days, and three times on one-day round trips. I cannot describe the place to you. I can show you images, but I can't describe it. Is it our favorite park? I'm not sure ... which of the NPs is our favorite. Banff, Jasper, Denali, Lassen, Bryce, Zion, Death Valley, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Mt. Rainier, Olympic, Crater Lake (nine times) ... and another seven or eight I don't remember or that weren't national parks like Redwoods in 1964 when it was a national monument. We spent two nights there one the way back from our "honeymoon" (in quotes because we had to find an apartment in Eugene, register for classes, get my teaching assignment, and marvel are what a quaint little town it was then).
No decision. But you all know what the top three are. Whichever one comes out on top depends on the year(s), the wildlife, the weather (108 at Rainier was not pleasant, but my first Black Bear), the clouds, air and sky quality... They were so memorable that, other than the year(s) we made the visit(s), I can tell you what we did, what we saw, the circumstances on getting certain shots... Ah, there's the key: Nature photography! It made the years go by, and any negative happenings, blur behind such positive memories.
Note to Alfred, Jen, Jen, Jenn, Jan, Jeffer, James, and Bernie: Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. Don't put off a visit too long. You may want to return. Ask Tom.
No, this has not been sharpened. And yes, that is the color of the Valley and its trees on a clear day. On a clear day, you CAN see forever.
