Espartillar es una localidad argentina del centro-oeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires perteneciente al partido de Saavedra, justo sobre el límite con el partido de Adolfo Alsina, en el que ingresa levemente.El pueblo toma este nombre, por la abundancia de Esparto, planta gramínea con hojas radicales, arrolladas entre sí, duras y muy tenaces.

Estos campos eran terrenos de casa de la indiada del Cacique Catriel y la del Cacique Cañomil pertenecientes a las tribus Puhuelches y que habitaban las islas de la laguna de los Ojansos, pertenecientes al partido de Puan. Estos indios llegaron a estos lugares con el fin de colonizar una familia de criollos la que no habiéndose instalado aun fue perseguida y apresada por la indiada del cacique Cañomil en las proximidades del Río Cuarto.

La hija mayor, Maria Cabral de 14 años fue cautivada por Cañomil y obligada a presenciar el sacrificio de los demás miembros de toda su familia.

Años más tarde Maria Cabral es libertada por las tropas del General Levalle, mientras la indiada de Catriel y Cañomil sostenían una lucha por las cuestiones de limites en la costa del Arroyo Pigüé contra la indiada del Cacique Pichipull.

Las últimas expediciones de estas regiones fueron realizadas por las tropas enviadas por el general Julio A. Roca quien termino de someter a la indiada y que aun queda como recuerdo los fortines 16 de Arroyo Venado, 26 y 24 de Guaminí y el Fortín "el Centinela".

Espartillar fue fundado en 1910, a raíz de la llegada del Ferrocarril del Sur. Su radio total entre población, quintas y chacritas es de 1255 hectáreas que fueron 1000 de la Estancia "La Curamalán " y 255 de la Estancia "Espartillar" de Don Alberto Bary. Esa extensión fue vendida por la compañía de Tierras del Sur, otorgando entre 5 y 10 años de pago.

Los primeros habitantes de la población fueron Reinaldo Monterrastelli con una casilla que hacía los servicios de fonda y posada, y Don Juan Taux quien levantó un galpón de chapas y estableció una herrería y fábrica de carnes.

Después de estos pioneros, llegaron otros pobladores y con la insipiente población surgió la necesidad de contar con una escuela. La Institución educativa fue fundada el 1/10/1918. En el año 1992 tuvo 90 inscriptos en 3 grados, en 1923 Espartillar no contaba aun con casas para alquilar por lo que no se podía establecer el destacamento de policía.

Cuenta con 806 habitantes (INDEC, 2010), lo que representa un descenso del 11,7% respecto a los 913 habitantes (INDEC, 2001) del censo anterior.

De ellos, 785 habitantes (INDEC, 2010) se encuentran en el partido de Saavedra y 21 habitantes (INDEC, 2010) en el partido de Adolfo Alsina.
