The red patch of feathers on the head of this Ruby Crowned Kinglet looks like an exclamation mark. It certainly was the right sign for my excitement when I discovered this little bird on my walk in the park this weekend. He doesn’t show that patch often and he doesn’t sit still for long. So I had to exercise lots of patience before I got this pose in clear view. I was thrilled to capture some lovely images of this little guy.
The exclamation points are because although they used to be one of the most common butterflies in the region, their numbers have fallen drastically and butterfly geeks are always thrilled to see one. And there's no doubt, it has the classic dogface silouette, the greenish tinge of the cal female, and when it opened its wings (no pic), no black areas on the inner wings.

For days I have hoped for an inspiration for this week's theme 'Surprise' of the 'This may not be Old San Juan but ...' group but there was no flash of genius. Then today I took a walk in the woods during my lunch break and when I was always back at my car I noticed this. The bright green exclamation mark hadn't been there a few weeks ago when I had last come by that tree and I have no idea what it is supposed to mean. Trees which will be chopped down are usually marked in red and with different symbols.

Yesterday was a cool day until late in the afternoon. The damselflies could be counted on two hands, and there was but one dragonfly. And then I noticed these leaves in the recesses of the swamp. I liked the shape of the "primary" leaf, thought "fall is here," and took the shot just as this Exclamation damselfly decided that that leaf was his!
