The exclamation points are because although they used to be one of the most common butterflies in the region, their numbers have fallen drastically and butterfly geeks are always thrilled to see one. And there's no doubt, it has the classic dogface silouette, the greenish tinge of the cal female, and when it opened its wings (no pic), no black areas on the inner wings.

While walking the North Vista Trail on a hike to Exclamation Point with an overlook along the North Rim and a view looking to the southwest across the canyon and gorge with blue skies above in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. With this image, I tried to balance the canyon and nearby landscape in the image. All around were outcroppings of ridgelines and cross-fissures between both sides of the gorge canyon walls. There was also some of the foreground in the lower image left that I felt helped to give a sense of perspective and a layering of the image.
I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 3 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.
An exclamation of joy was let out upon seeing this Silver-spotted Skipper (Hesperia comma) at Aston Rowant nature reserve in the Chilterns. The place is so lush and overgrown that I was worried these warm-ground loving little ones wouldn't make it. This is the only one I saw; a chance encounter whilst following another butterfly. The poor angle was dictated by a small gap in the long grasses; a couple of seconds to grab the record shot and she was off and lost in the meadow chaos. I've yet to catch one of these at rest.
Amazingly, it was August 4th, a Sunday, in almost perfect conditions (low wind, up to 20C, hazy sun and light cloud mix) - and I was the only photographer at the site (the north side) all day - from 0430 to 1800. Plenty of fresh male Chalkhills about but other than Meadow Browns and Six-Spot Burnet moths, everything else was low numbers. Didn't see an Adonis.
Yesterday was a cool day until late in the afternoon. The damselflies could be counted on two hands, and there was but one dragonfly. And then I noticed these leaves in the recesses of the swamp. I liked the shape of the "primary" leaf, thought "fall is here," and took the shot just as this Exclamation damselfly decided that that leaf was his!
'lord, love a duck' is an exclamation uttered when nothing else will fit... often used when stunned or dismayed, a mild and inoffensive expression of surprise.
