Armored ship at dawn - Fortresse Holland (Hellevoetsluis/NL)

Strangely enough, I was the first and for a long time the only one this early morning, the first night of the HNLMS Buffel back in the dry dock and in Hellevoetsluis. It was still quiet on and around the historic dock, the armored ship looked grand and gigantic in the old dock. A unique moment, an almost 200-year-old dock and a hundred-year-old ship, which have even been contemporaries in the past.

Hellevoetsluis: Fortresse Holland Maritiem Kwartier

This was the next day after October 5, 2013. The day the Hr.Ms. Buffel was towed from Rotterdam to Hellevoetsluis to be docked for a short period in the Drydock Jan Blanken before permanently moored in Hellevoetsluis

Ramtorenschip De Buffel (Est. 1896) - this ironclad ram ship was in service of the Royal Dutch Navy until 1973 as "Hr.Ms. Buffel" or "HNLMS Buffel" (NATO number A 884). The first ship of the Royal Dutch Navy without sails, a heavy armored ram ship using a steam engine and two propellers. Equiped with an armament of a ram on her bow, several guns, serviced by a crew of 150 men. Her main task was to play a role in the Dutch coastal defense, later in use as an accommodation ship. From February 7, 2015, the Buffel is permanent moored at the Koningskade, Maritime Quarter of Fortresse Holland together with the other historic ships such as the minesweeper Bernisse, the Lightship 12 de Noord-Hinder (1963) and of course the stone Dry Dock Jan Blanken from 1806 with pump house.
