"Flos Ignotum"

 

I spotted this flower on our freezing family stroll this afternoon. It is a rather small flower, but I thought it might be interesting under a macro lens. I lit it from directly above with a snooted speedlight. I placed a piece of foamcore underneath, just to fill in the shadows. Thinking I might go bright with this flower (I tend to go dark), I pulled down the white seamless paper. I planned to aim a second strobe at the paper, and blow out the background. My aim was clearly off, and it created a gradient. Upon noticing that dumb luck had a better idea than myself, I finessed the gradient, and came away with this image. Using the macro lens and extension tubes, the depth of field becomes very shallow. I focused on the center of the flower, rendering the near and far edges, as well as the stem, out of focus.
