Coleoptera
Day 167 of 365
"Coleoptera"
I found today's subject in the refilled hot tub. I rescued him, and put him in some shade in the garden. I later found him in a state of death. His death was not in vain. I quickly jabbed a pin in his posterior, and mounted him on a piece of foamcore. The key light is a three-foot strip light, directly above. After experimenting with two rim lights, I decided on the overheard strip bank, as it delivered both the hair light and a rim light. I then filled in the front with an on-board ringflash. It just lightens up all the shadows on the camera-side of the little guy. Lastly, this is a composite of 6 images. That is to say, I took a series of photographs, each focused on a very specific part of our model. With a macro lens, it is difficult to retain focus throughout the entire image. You can actually see that the top and second-to-last foot down are a little soft. This is because when using the LCD on the camera, it is difficult to distinguish what is in focus when this critter is filling your whole frame. That is laziness on my part. Still, I think the computer did a nice job of stitching the layers together. I'm glad we don't see this much detail everyday. Thanks for passing through!!
