Catholic Marriage - A Joke?

Catholic Marriage Jokes

I receive every week in my email, several disparaging jokes about marriage, both about secular and Catholic marriage. How many do you receive. Here are samples of two I received a couple of weeks ago from a cousin of mine.

Catholic Marriage - Joke #1

A HUSBAND COMES HOME FROM CHURCH; HE GREETS HIS WIFE AND LIFTS HER UP. HE THEN CARRIED HER AROUND THE HOUSE.

THE WIFE WAS SO SURPRISED AND SHE ASKED "DID THE BISHOP PREACH ABOUT BEING ROMANTIC"?

THE HUSBAND SAID, "NO, HE SAID WE MUST CARRY OUR BURDENS AND SORROWS."

Catholic Marriage - Joke #2

A senior citizen drove his brand new BMW Z3 convertible out of the car salesroom. Taking off down the motorway, he floored it to 160 kph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.

"Amazing!" he thought as he flew down the F3, enjoying pushing the pedal to the metal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a police car behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring.

"I can get away from him - no problem!" thought the elderly nutcase as he floored it to 180 kph, then 190, then 200kph. Suddenly, he thought, "What on earth am I doing? I'm too old for this nonsense!". So he pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the police car to catch up with him.

Pulling in behind him, the police officer walked up to the driver's side of the BMW, looked at his watch and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 10 minutes. Today is Friday and I'm taking off for the weekend. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go."

The man, looked very seriously at the policeman, and replied, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. I thought you were bringing her back."

"Have a good day, Sir," said the policeman.

Did you laugh when you read these jokes. They may not paint a dismal picture of Catholic marriage specifically, but still put marriage in a bad light.

Many years ago I learnt that words, phrases and sentences that we use frequently can reprogram our brain. This is known as the science or pseudo-science of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

NLP teaches that what we repeat often becomes our default thinking mode. For example if you are a melancholic person and you keep reaffirming that you are a happy person, one day you will become happy. In the same manner, if you keep disparaging marriage, you will view marriage as a burden as these jokes seem to make of it.

I did some snooping around and found this article pointing out that the Catholic marriage rate in the US has plunged...

Are jokes like the above to be blamed for the pathetic marriage rates? Surely the jokes are partly to blame for spreading disparaging views of marriage. It's for this reason that such jokes should never be shared in the company of children as their innocent minds will be programmed to believe that all marriages are a disaster waiting to happen.

Is Catholic marriage meant to be different? The answer is a clear and loud Yes! If you don't believe me, sign up for a Theology of the Body seminar in your parish and see how it will change your married life. Even if your marriage is sizzling, you can make it burning hot after attending it. If it's on the rocks, it'll start rocking (in the good way). :) Believe me, as I'm a TOB facilitator in my parish and I've seen marriages saved by TOB. Even my Catholic marriage was no longer a joke.
