Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Pelts Blue' 22W50 Lawson Cypress G3-
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Pelts Blue' 22W50 Lawson Cypress G3- (Hinrich Kordes Nursery, Germany 1984) Large Lawson Cypress, Size at 10 years: 10x3ft., Foliage at first blue-grey, later dark blue-green, USDA Hardiness Zone 6, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed G3 for 9.5 YEARS (MSU). Planted in 2013.
American Conifer Society: Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Pelt's Blue' is a very narrow, columnar tree from of Lawson cypress. It is similar to Ch. lawsoniana `Columnaris Glauca,' but with more intense deep-Blue foliage, arguably one of the best Blue conifers available in the nursery trade. Note that like 'Columnaris' and its derivatives, 'Pelt's Blue' is very prone to Phytophthera lateralis, a root-borne fungal plague. In areas where this problem is prevalent, always seek out specimens grafted onto disease-resistant (DR) understock.
After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 10 to 15 feet (3 - 5 m) tall and 28 to 26 inches (70 - 90 cm) wide, an annual growth rate of 12 to 18 inches (30 - 45 cm).
This cultivar originated 1984 at Hinrich Kordes Nursery, Bilsen Germany and introduced to the nursery trade by van Pelt's Nursery, Belgium. It is also seen listed under the names, 'Van Pelt's Blue' and 'AFF Van Pelt's Blue.'
Narrow conical medium-sized tree. May be subject to phytophthora root diseases. Needs to be high and dry. Winter damage, 2014. Planted in 2013. Well drained garden area. The one at MSU Hidden Lake Gardens had severe winter damage and was removed. After an iffy start, it seems to be doing good. AKA 'Van Pelt's Blue' ~56 inches tall in early 2019. Severe die back in 2019. Probably more like a zone 6 plant.
