A Traffic Ticket Can Cost More Than the Fine

Most drivers think about the immediate consequence of a driving violation.

The ticket.

The court date.

The fine.

But serious driving mistakes can continue affecting you after those are over.

Here are five decisions worth avoiding.

1. Treating speeding like it is harmless

Speeding reduces the time available to react and increases stopping distance. It can also make a crash much more severe.

An occasional minor ticket and a pattern of serious speeding are not the same thing. Repeated or severe violations can create larger licensing and insurance problems.

2. Driving after drinking or using an impairing substance

This is not simply an insurance issue.

It is a road-safety issue first.

A DUI or DWI can lead to license restrictions, court requirements, higher insurance costs and, depending on the state, proof-of-financial-responsibility requirements.

3. Driving without the insurance your state requires

The risk is much bigger than receiving a citation.

If you cause a crash without required liability coverage, you may also face personal responsibility for injuries or property damage.

Some states can require additional proof before allowing a driver to regain full driving privileges.

4. Driving while your license is suspended

A suspended license means the state has already restricted your driving privilege.

Continuing to drive can create another violation and make reinstatement more complicated.

5. Letting violations become a pattern

One bad decision is already risky.

Several violations in a short period can change the way a DMV, court or insurer views your driving history.

And this is where drivers sometimes first hear the term SR-22.

An SR-22 is not a special type of insurance. It is a filing that proves a driver carries the required liability coverage when a state requires proof of financial responsibility.

Rules vary by state, so never assume that one violation automatically means you need one.

AutoInsureNews explains what an SR-22 is, why it may be required, how filing works and what happens if coverage lapses:

The easiest SR-22 problem to solve is the one you never create.

Drive sober. Slow down. Keep your license and insurance status current.

Which driving mistake do you think people underestimate the most?
