"Drive carefully. Dying is for Easter eggs. PennDOT"
A macabre message promoting safe driving on an otherwise cheerful bumper sticker from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
As reported in the Pittsburgh Press on April 11, 1973, p. 14, Milton Shapp, governor of Pennsylvania (1971-1979), held a news conference to announce a "$15,000 traffic safety campaign for the Easter holidays with the slogan: 'Drive carefully. Dying is for Easter eggs.' The governor showed a 30-second Department of Transportation film which will be shown on television between now and the Easter weekend, reminding motorists to drive carefully. Transportation Secretary Jacob G. Kassab set the mood for the occasion by coloring Easter eggs and carefully placing them in a basket."

5367RU was a Leyland Royal Tiger Doyen C47Ft delivered new to Clyde Coast member Hugh Frazer of Fairlie in January 1985, although it had been an exhibit at the 1984 Commercial Motor Show. Sadly it seemed to be unreliable and soured the company's relationship with Leyland Motors, as it was felt the after-sales service provided was poor. It only lasted until August 1986, when it was traded into Arlington Motor Company (dealers) of Enfield. It was resold in March 1987 to The Travellers Coach Company in Hounslow, and by October of that year was with Osborne's of Tollesbury as their number 31. It moved again in April 1994 to Safedrive Coaches of Shenley, Seabrook Coaches of Hythe in July 1995, Buzzlines of Ashford in October 1995 and finally to Smith of Molash in June 1996.

Vintage Highway Driving Safety Booklet - Death on the Highway. Following in the bloody footsteps of Highway Safety Films of Ohio came a number of independently produced imitators such as this one by the Suicide club of Berkeley, Michigan. This publication is comprised largely of intentionally gruesome accident photos. From a different time - indeed. It’s always a thrill when it’s from Vinnie DeVille!
It is National Teen Driver Safety Week (October 18 – 24), so what better way to pay homage to the much-needed messaging than teaching your licensed kids, and the adults in their world, the importance of tire technology in an automotive world full of distractions. For this reason, I ordered a set of Michelin’s new and superior CrossClimate2 all-season tires to make sure my 17-year-old daughter MiKaiya has fresh tread wrapped around her 2014 Toyota Avalon's 18" rims from one of the top industry tire brands.
Sadly, I still see seasoned driving adults paying little attention to their wheels and often go with the cheapest rubber they can find or replace only the rear or front tire instead of the full set. Thus, that behavior is picked up by their children who then showcase no concern for the importance of tires. From braking distance to wet and dry traction to performance, your tires are literally one of the most essential components of your ride. The contact patch (the amount of rubber that touches the surfaces during rotation) is like a pair of cleats on the football field or spikes on the track.

Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) officials joined movie and television star Michael Rooker and representatives from Arthur Agency, a Carbondale-based advertising firm, at the Music Box Theatre today to announce the start of the Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown, and announce the celebrity’s role in a new video series entitled “The Driving Dead.”
This statewide crackdown will feature a new and innovative advertising campaign that will utilize digital and social media in a re-doubled effort to reach those drivers who are most-often involved in drunk driving crashes, most likely to drink and drive and most likely to not buckle up. In addition, hundreds of law enforcement agencies will be out in force statewide to ensure Illinois roadways stay safe.
“We are pleased that celebrity Michael Rooker wanted to help us reach those who are risking their lives and the lives of others by not buckling up and driving drunk,” said Acting Transportation Secretary Erica Borggren. “While we have made progress, over 900 people die each year on Illinois roads; one-third of those die at the hands of an impaired driver and nearly half are not wearing a seat belt.”
For this campaign, Arthur Agency has created a video trailer that features star, Michael Rooker, who plays Merle Dixon, from the popular TV series “The Walking Dead” that will promote a website series for a mature audience entitled “The Driving Dead” and engage an online community through social media platforms. The series will include short videos, also featuring Rooker, that will be publicized on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hulu and YouTube, and involves a cast of central characters living in a Zombie filled, post-apocalyptic world. The situations the characters find themselves in depict dangers of driving impaired and not buckling up, and there’s no shortage of entertainment value.
“Far too many people still mix alcohol, drugs and driving. Young people, in particular, often don't understand that impaired driving is a crime, and a serious one -- and they also are less likely to buckle up,” Borggren added. “These same young people ages 21-34 no longer receive news through traditional means. We’re hopeful this new series will catch their attention and give them a reason to log on or check their mobile devices. When they do, they’ll be entertained -- and most importantly, they’ll receive a life-saving message.”
“The Driving Dead” series will officially kick-off on August 25. For more information, visit www.thedrivingdeadseries.com.
Leading up to and following the August 25 launch, fans can connect with “The Driving Dead” on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for up-to-date news, behind-the-scenes footage and future episodes of the series.

A final, end-of-the-year push begins today to lead Illinois to far fewer motor vehicle fatalities than last year and the lowest annual fatality totals since 2009. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police (ISP) and more than 230 law enforcement agencies across the state are participating in this comprehensive effort to save lives on Illinois roads at a time of year that can be one of the most deadly.
The enforcement crackdown will coincide with the premiere of the latest episode of IDOT’S website series “The Driving Dead”, which will be available beginning Dec.19 at TheDrivingDeadSeries.com. The first video in the series, featuring Michael Rooker from the popular TV show “The Walking Dead” and the smash hit movie “Guardians of the Galaxy,” was unveiled this summer and has received more than 640,000 views on YouTube.
The videos show the zombie-filled adventures of Rooker and other characters, who find themselves in situations depicting the dangers of driving impaired and not buckling up. You can connect with “The Driving Dead” on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for up-to-date news and behind-the-scenes looks at the series.
The statewide enforcement effort also features the familiar messages of “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” to remind motorists of the consequences of bad driving behavior. Holiday motorists can expect hundreds more roadside safety checks, seat belt enforcement zones and other police saturation patrols looking for impaired drivers and seat belt law violators from now through Jan. 1.
In 1920, the first year motor vehicle fatalities were recorded, 728 people died on Illinois roads. In that year, vehicle-miles traveled totaled an estimated 3.46 billion miles. Just two years later, annual fatalities already increased to more than 1,000. Nearly a century later, annual fatalities again fell below 1,000, even though annual vehicle-miles traveled increased 30-fold in that time to105 billion each year. In 1920, Illinois’ annual motor vehicle fatality rate was 21.03 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. In 2013, that rate was 0.94.
Illinois has an opportunity in 2014 to make even more history by recording one of its lowest annual motor vehicle fatality totals ever, with a chance at achieving an all-time, modern-day low. As of December 17, 2014, 878 people have lost their lives on Illinois roads, which is 78 lower than the same timeframe in 2013.
During the 2013 Christmas holiday (6 p.m. Dec. 24 to 11:59 p.m. Dec.25), two people were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes in Illinois. Both fatalities involved a drinking driver. Over the last five years in Illinois (2009-2013), 38 fatalities occurred in Illinois during Christmas, 11 of which (29 percent) involved a drinking driver.
