KMTX 3002 - SD40-2
Built as MP 3294 in July 1979, this SD40-2 bounced around the UP for 20 years following the MP-UP-WP merger in 1982. It received Armour Yellow paint, but kept its MP number, in April 1985. It was renumbered to UP 4294 in July 1989, and then to UP B4294 in August 1992 as part of a program to convert some SD40-2's to "trail-only" status by removing cab seats, toilets, and refrigerators. In 2000 it was renumbered to UP 8983 to make room for new SD70Ms, though UP retired the locomotive in December of 2000.
This venerable SD40-2 ended up in the hands of National Railway Equipment as a leaser, and spent most of the next 10 years as NREX 4294. In 2010 the locomotive was bought by Kinder Morgan, a company that owns pipelines and energy terminals. Renumbered to KMTX 3002, the locomotive has spent the last 15 years assigned to Kinder Morgan's Deepwater Export Facility at the Port of Houston.
Much of that time has been spent on the shuttle job bringing petroleum coke from the nearby Lyondell Basell refinery over to the KM facility for export, like seen here. Though with the refinery shutting down in early 2025, the coke job will soon stop running and this locomotive will likely find itself in more captive service.
