The Empress at Chaney Jct
The former SP searchlights protecting Chaney Junction in Houston are pretty old, but they can't hold a candle to this elderly teakettle. At almost 100 years old, the only thing in this central Houston photo that predates the steam engine are the fact that railroad tracks were first laid here in 1856 by the Galveston & Red River Railway (soon Houston & Texas Central, eventually part of the Southern Pacific system).
And, as has happened for many items over the years, CP 2816 will outlast these searchlights too. The orange cables in the foreground are for signal replacements that would be erected in the weeks following the Final Spike Tour's trip through Houston.
