Steam at Devers

CPKC trains operate on trackage rights across the UP for more than 100 miles from Beaumont to Rosenberg, TX. The trackage rights were given to KCS as a condition of the UP-SP merger in 1996, and they've become integral to CPKC's route to Mexico. Supposedly, these trackage rights were also a huge sticking point to running CP 2816 to Mexico for the Final Spike Tour, as UP wasn't very amenable to another railroad's steam engine on their rails.

But they made it happen! Here, CP 2816 races through lineside trees as it passes the east switch of Devers siding between Beaumont and Houston. The former SP heritage of the Sunset Route here is clearly evident in the remaining Type G 'bowling ball' signals.
