Quintessential Cape Cod

I made another trip down to the Cape for some afternoon trains and while traffic and clouds stymied me earleir I was redeemed with a nice set of images of two trains in perfect light at Buzzards Bay.

Ex CDOT FL9 #2026 (blt. Sept. 1957 as NH 2007) is leading the six car Cape Cod Central dinner train with sister FL9 #2011 (blt. Sept. 1960 as NH #2038) on the south end.

The train has crossed the canal and run north past the depot and is seen here coming over the Pocasset Narrows bridge by Buttermilk Bay and entering the town of Wareham from Bourne at MP 54.3 on MassDOT's ex New Haven Cape Mainline now operated by the Mass Coastal Railroad. As soon as the rear unit clears this deck bridge they will pause and then reverse direction back over the canal and head down the Falmouth Branch for about an hour giving the MBTA/Keolis CapeFLYER time to come up from Hyannis and cross the bridge on their way back to Boston.

In the distance just beyond the station that is out of sight rise the twin 271 ft towers that support the 544 long lift span crossing the Cape Cod Canal. Built by the Public Works Administration it opened in December 1935 and at the time of its completion, it was the longest vertical lift span in the world.
