Haben Girma

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Haben Girma born July 29, 1988, is a disability rights advocate and the first deafblind graduate of #HarvardLawSchool. While working for #DisabilityRightsAdvocates in July 2014, #HabenGirma represented the #NationalFederationOfTheBlind and a blind #Vermont resident in a lawsuit against #Scribd for not providing access to blind readers, in violation of the #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct. In 2014 Girma gave a talk at #TEDxBaltimore, where she also confronted them for not readily providing captions for their recorded #TEDx talks, including her own. Haben Girma was appointed to the national board of trustees for the #HelenKellerServicesForTheBlind in January 2015 and on July 20, 2015, she met with #PresidentBarackObama at the #WhiteHouse to highlight the importance of accessible technology. #ClapForThat!
