Short Sunderland Flying Boat.
G-ALUN Saunders Roe Princess at Cowes in 1954,the only one to fly clocking up only about 100 hrs.Two others were built and cocooned immediately.they were all scrapped because of hull corrosion due to bad maintenance in 1967.
Saunders-Roe Princess, you can see the massive 16ft 6 in diameter props they had.The inner four nascells had two turboprop engines each driving one prop, counter rotating to its partner.the outers had one engine & one prop.
This view shows the double deck hull off well, pity they couldn't have found use as fire tankers like the Martin Mars planes did.
Saunders Roe Princess Flying Boat G-ALUN. over Farnborough Air Show in 1953.Great pity it spent years at Cowes waiting to be scrapped without use.. A design that never got built was a 24 jet 313ft wingspan 1000 seat 'Queen' for P&O.
